Page Four THE PILOT March, 1955 SPORTS DIGEST By MAC HILL —BULLDOGS END CAGE WARS— The local cagers rang down the curtain on their ’54-55 season at Spruce Pine last month by turning back Spartan burg, 102-96, for third place in the conference tournament. The Builders advanced to the tourney semi-finals by dropping Asheville-Biltmore, 95-70; however, a 113-96 loss to the power laden North Greenville club in the next game forced them into the consolation bracket. Those representing G-W on the hardwood courts for the last time were Co-Captains Billy Bovender and Bill Norris, Carlisle Hostetter, Gene Huss, Mac Hill, and Larry VonCannon. Bovender is the team’s leading scorer with a commendable 16.4 per game average. Hostetter, the team’s most improved player, finished a close second with a 15 point average. Other regulars and their averages are, Norris, 12.1; Huss, 6.5; Hill, 8.3; Don Poole, 9.2; and Scottie Frizzell, 6.7. —TRACING THE DOG TRACKS— The Bulldogs inaugurated their schedule at Cullowhee by losing to the WCTC JV’s 75-62. Coach Harris’ quint apparent ly began to gather steam by crushing the Black Mountain and Forest City semi-pro teams in their next two outings by scores of 89-54 and 96-56 respectively. Then North Green ville invaded our Baptist’s Hollow with a team averaging well over six feet tall. Despite this disadvantage the locals made a fight of it, leading all the way down to the waning moments of the game before succumbing 76-64. During the next 10 games the Bulldogs split even, beating Hiddenite, 94-53, Davidson JV’s, 45-44, and 48-46, Asheville- Biltmore, 84-65, and WCTC JV’s 71-62, while losing to Spartan burg, 69-65, Brevard, 60-58, Mars Hill, 57-51, Catawba JV’s, 88-77, and Furman Freshmen, 90-72. Following this the Bulldogs appeared to be leaning toward the “cold,” for they went into a brief tailspin and dropped four consecutive games to Lees McRae, 104-56, and 97-72, Asheville-Biltmore, 88-81, and Furman Freshmen, 106-75. At this point the locals experienced what seemed to be a “basketball revolution” for they finished the season with a blazing pace, losing only twice to North Greenville in their final eight games. The locals rambled through Spartanburg, 90-76, and 102-96, Brevard, 92-47, Pauls & Cryme, 102-53, Mars Hill, 98-82, and Asheville-Biltmore, 95-70, to compile an over all mark of 13 wins and 13 setbacks. The Baptists totaled 1,999 points for an average of 76.9 per game as compared with 1,896 points and a 72.9 average for their opponents. They passed the century mark in two outings and averaged 97.3 in the final eight games. Ironically, however, the team’s two lowest scores, 45 and 48, were scored in victories. —BOVENDER HONORED— Forward Bill Bovender was named to the Western Carolinas Conference all-star team which was selected by the coaches of the loop. Bovender, co-captain of this year’s quint, garner ed 409 points in 25 games for an average of 16.4 per game. He was also named to the Charlotte Observer’s all-state junior college team. —BASEBALL— Coach Harris issued the call for baseball candidates to report for a meeting here last week and was greeted by 26 aspirants. The battery mates continued to work out daily in the gym and they will be joined by the full squad this week. The Bulldogs suffered a severe blow when Dennis Dorman and Geddes Swofford, both regulars last year, failed to enroll for the spring semester. However, Harris will have six returning let- termen to form the nucleus of this year’s team. Bill Carlton, Bill Kiser, Joe Sanders, Howard Proctor and Jimmy Gamble are returning from last year’s squad and Steve Morrisett was a member of the 1953 state championship team. The schedule: March 31—Wingate; April 4—at Wingate; 8—Mars Hill (Doubleheader); 12—at Spartanburg; 15—open; 16—open; 19— Poll of Opinion By “PHIL” HENDERSON Attention all you Gardner-Webb males!
