First there was the difficulty of adjustment from high school to college. To some of you this was a problem. Then there was the adjustment to the matter of leaving home. You were not entirely conscious of it, but many of you were breaking home ties that had held you all your life. But you made the transition and have stuck with it. However it was hard. Sometimes teachers seemed unusually hard in their assignments, and the Bursar seemed heartless in his always needing money. Some of you have not been received as cordially as you had hoped, and some have had to struggle with the means to stay. You have also learned, I hope, that only those who have made your work difficult, though attrac tive, have really cared about you. Fifteen years from now you will know that. You have learned too per haps that when a blow comes the little person swivels, and the really great one expands. Your adjustment to your future college life will not be as difficult as this has been. You have climbed the most difficult hill. Next Year's PILOT This month the Pilot is being issued by Jerry Keeter, new editor, and his prospective staff, under the direction of the retiring staff. To this incoming staff we extend our best wishes and encouragement as they assume the re sponsibility and privileges of gathering and issuing the Pilot. To those of you who will return to Gard- ner-Webb next year, we would remind you that the Gardner-Webb Pilot can be a successful publication only as you, the students, cooperate with the Pilot staff in making it so. The purpose of the College newspaper is to record accurately, yet entertainingly, the events, activities, and other items of interest to the students. The college newspaper is of importance, not only as a means of forming and entertaining the students on the campus, but it also serves as an Jerry Keeter, Editor Betty Jo Williams, News Editor Editor's Note Our sincere thanks to t>ie student body for their support in our recent election to the positions of Editor and News Editor of the Pilot. We will do everything possible next year to steer this paper in the direction of greater success. In this last issue we especially wish to thank and congratulate the 54-55 Pilot staff, and especial ly its editor, Mary Philbeck, for the time, talent and skill which have gone into making the Gardner-Webb Pilot a proud possession. As for next year’s paper, several appointments have already been made. These are as follows: Shelia Mayberry as Associate Editor, Joyce Stephenson as Business Manager, Ed Scruggs as Associate Business Manager, Paul Stedman as Circulation Manager, and Bill Sitton as Photographer. ambassador of Gardner-Webb College. Well over one-third of the copies of the Pilot printed each month are mailed out by the circulation department of the staff. These papers go to alumni, trustees, our advertisers, other colleges, and other persons and organizations interested in the activities and progress of the college. In addition (and, perhaps, the most important destination of the papers) a vast majority of these circulation copies go to surround ing high schools. To many people, the Pilot may serve as an introduction to the college and could well figure in a student’s decision to come to Gardner- Webb. Co-operation and industry are essential for any job well done, so if you have the opportunity to work on the Pilot in any capacity, do so, and consider it your privilege of service to a college that exists to serve. —Mary Philbeck.
