FOOTBALL—The local gridders compiled a commendable
record in their efforts last fall, bringing home the bacon
thrice, going down to defeat four times, and deadlocking
twice. The victories were at the expense of Mars Hill, Ashe-
ville-Biltmore, and Western Carolina JV’s. The defeats were
dealt by Apalachian JV’s, Lees McRae, and Mars Hill. Chow
an and Asheville-Biltmore held the local to standstills. Five
Bulldogs were selected on the official all-state junior col
lege team. They were, Dean Upton, James Parker, Alfred
Stepp, Bobby Newton, and Tommy Sheets. Upton and Newton
were also named to the mythical all-state college team.
^ BASKETBALL—Coach Harris’ basketball charges experienced
a “hot” and “cold” season. The Bulldog quint inaugurated the
’54-’55 campaign with a rapid pace, however they gradually
tapered off through mid-season and then each squad member
seemed to toss some coal on the fire as they burned through
the oposition down the home stretch to garner 13 victroies
in 26 outings including third place in the conference tourna
ment. Co-captain Bill Bovender was named to both the all-
conference and all-tourney teams.
BASEBALL—At the present time the G-W nine has an over
all record of seven triumphs as compared with five setbacks.
The locals are leading the Western Carolinas Junior College
race with a 6-1 slate. Jerry Hawkins is the leading stickman
with a healthy .415, Others with average above the magic
.300 circle are, J. T. Davis, .354, Bill Carlton, .350, Howard
Proctor, .329, Bill Bell, .314, and Tommy Sheets, .311. Aside
from his offensive talents, Davis has compiled a won-lost
record of 4-1. Ralph Presslar, however, is the leading pitcher
with a 2-0 i-ecord and an earned run mark of 3.91.
INTRAMURAL ACTIVITY—The 2nd East teams will re
ceive the championship trophy for intramural activity which
will be presented by Coach HaiTis upon the completion of the
softball games. At the present ,the 2nd East team has a
total of 16 points by virtue of finishing first in volleyball and
second in both football and basketball. They have clinched
at least third place in softball which will give them a minimum
of 19 points. Their nearest rivals, the 1st West teams have
only 12 points to their credit and can possibly attain a maxi
mum of 18 points.
