Page Six THE PILOT NOVEMBER, 1956 IMPROVEMENTS AT GARDNER-WEBB By BILL KINCAID By the time the girls return from Thanksgiving vacation they will probably be the owners of two new television sets; one in HA.P.Y. Dorm and one in the new dorm. The two T.V.’s are being bought by contri butions of the girls and several friends in Shelby. This, with several other new ac- compliihments, is being done as the result of recommendation of a spe cial comlmttee of the faculty which was appointed by the board of trus tees. On the committee are: John Roberts, chairman; Miss Doris Jones, J. Y. Hamrick, Norman. Har ris, Mrs. Hester Haynes, and two trustees, Carlos Young and Rev. • Harold White. Five new table tennis tables have been constructed. Three have been placed in the quonset hut, and two are in the basement of the girls dormitory. A grill, coffee and chocolate urns have been purchased for the student CHEERING FOR GARDNER-WEBB This is the second of a series on our cheerleaders for this year. Betty Harming, who comes from Edne3rville, is another sophomore who has chalked up quite a record. She is an active marshall, and is on the Pilot and Anchor staffs. Al though Betty was at Edneyville only her senior year, she was a success as a cheerleader. Byron "Luscious” Rippy is a fresh man cheerleader from Shelby and is a graduate of Shelby High School. Rippy, characterized by an unusual wit, says he was secretary of his home room class and active in dra matics. At Gardner-Webb Rippy takes an active interest in dramatics, is a member of the hiking club, and a member of IRC. When asked what his hobby is, he says that it is raising dogs. In answer to our current Pilot Poll of Opinion question, Byron says, "Elvis is all right, but I like Little Richard better.” • Peggy McDowell is another one of our sophomore cheerleaders. Peggy comes from Mill Springs and is a graduate of Green Creek High School, where she participated in many extracurricular activities. Last year Peggy was a member of the Gardner-Webb girls’ basketball squad of which she was an outstanding Prom Boiling Springs comes San dra McGinnis. Sandra, a fresh man, is a graduate of Boiling Springy where she was chief cheer leader for two years. Chosen as Miss Hi Miss, Sandra was active as a marshall, a class of ficer, a member of various clubs, and was a member of the amiual staff. A liberal arts major, Sandra lists music and swimming among her out side interests. Also among the freshman cheer leaders is Dennis Ruth Hamrick, a graduate of Boiling Springs High School. Listed among her high school ac complishments are: Cheerleader, chief marshall, a member of the lit erary society, glee club, school paper staff, and the annual staff. For the short time Dennis Ruth, a business major, has been here she has already begun to make a record for herself as witnessed by her scholastic stand ing and popularity. Besides one main outside interest at present, she also likes swimming, dancing, and music. She says that her hobby is collecting cups and saucers, not cooking and sewing, but hastily adds she can do both. Next in focus is Patsy Greene, a sophomore cheerleader from Latti- more. She is a graduate of Latti- more High School where she was active in basketball, winning the county sportsmanship trophy for two consecutive years. A marshall and member of various clubs, Pat was valedictorian. Pat says that her primary outside interest is Don, but she also likes swimming and preparing unusual dishes. As for the future, Pat plans to attend eith er Wake Forest or Appalachian. Another of our sophomore cheer leaders is Freida Austin, a business major, who comes to Gardner-Webb from Charlotte. She is a graduate of Central High School. Besides be ing a cheerleader, Freida is a mem ber of the YWA and the hiking club. Freida’s hobbies include sewing and cooking. After graduation from Gardner-Webb, Freida plans to work in Charlotte. BASKETBALL PRACTICE BEGINS with the grid season nearing an end Gardner - Webb cagers have started wiping the dust off their basketballs. When Coach Harris called the first practice for his pros pective sharpshooters on October 26, CAMPUS SPORTS By RONALD WILLIAMS Football’s reign as king of intramural sports at Gardner- Webb ended dramtically. The program was a double elimination contest. Every team except First West and Second East was eliminated. Then the battle for championship started. The first game was won by First West by a score of 13-7. Executing the scoring for First West was their quarterback Robert Webb. He connected first to Bob Downey. The try for the extra point was good. Second East came back to score on a pass from Bob Crew to Jack Reavis. First West refused to go down. Phone 5221 38 husky lads showed up. After a hard practice it seemed evident that several of these boys would not return for the next ses sion of practice. This proved true when only 32 returned the second day. With each practice the number became smaller until it reached 20. There are now 20 boys battling for a position on the varsity squad, and the coaches have announced that there will be a “B” team that will consist of eight boys.
