PAGE FOUR T H E P I L 0 T MAY, 1959 TRACING THE BULLDOGS By Doug Goans The Bulldogs are still riding high, wide ,and handsome. They have now won 14 straight games. Coach Nor man HaiTis’s Bulldogs have beaten everyone in the loop at least one time and most of them twice. The Bulldogs have defeated North Greenville 2-1 and 8-2, Asheville- Biltmore 17-4 and 8-3, Spartanburg 6-1 and -5, Brevai’d 2-1, and 5-0, Mars Hill -4 and Wingate, who is now second in the conference, 13-4. Wayne Froneberger has the most wins for Gardner-Webb, as he has pitched himself to a 7-0 record. Bob Jones is next with 5-0 record, Wes ley Hughes has on his record the other two wins. Ted Brackett is fast coming up and is probably the best reliefer in the loop. In non-conference games, Gard ner-Webb has defeated Gaston Tech 28-4 and 13-2, and the Davidson freshmen 17-3 and 11-4. The Bulldogs have scored 149 runs on 167 hits to date, while their op ponents have scored 38 runs on 77 hits. The Bulldogs have made 24 er rors and their opponents have com mitted 50. Gardner-Webb has also had 131 runs batted in while hold ing their opponents to 31. This alone shows how they have outdone their opponents, but here is another fact about the Bulldogs—they have 11 men on the team hitting .300 or bet ter. David Ezell is hitting .500, Ed Lohr is hitting .404, Dean Jones is hitting .383, Wesley Hughes is bat ting .375, Bob Jones is batting .364, and Harold Cook is batting .362. These are only a few of the boys who are blasting the opposition’s pitching off the mound. There have been only four times this year that a team has used one pitcher the en tire game. Gardner-Webb has two games re maining—one with Wingate, which they must win to stay in first place in the confei-ence, and another with Mars Hill, which they must also win. The Bulldogs have had a wonder- Graduates” Co-Ed Theater Boiling Springs, N. 0. -11 now; let’s hope 1 their great play - of the season, ab r h rbl av. 44 17 22 19 .500 Wesley Hughes Bobby Jones Harold Cook Gene Wray Bill Nix Bill Cudd 5 Terry Whisnant 4i Wayne Froneberger 2' Ted Brackett Donald Horton 1 Marshall Crews Jerry Callicutt 55 15 20 19 47 15 35 2 36 7 GOOD OLD DAYS chicken lot. We collected a few chickens and some more feathers that time. Well, on up there a piece, I saw ma and pa and a whole herd of folks standing there shouting and waving at us. Well, we were going right by or over them one, when pa jumped in with us. He started all this frantic work to get it stopped and cold and he did. So we got out with the collection we had made during the trip and let pa have his ole’ horseless carriage. Heck, I’d rather ride a horse, at least they stop when you holler “Whoa!” HUDSON'S In Shelby Allows 10% Discount to G-W Students ASK FOR IT!
