The 'dogs unmuzzled a hard hitting offensive attack against the Bobcats and overcame an early L-M lead. In the first quarter the Bob cats’ Bob Farris pounced on a G-W fumble and raced 40 yards flown to the G-W two before be ing hauled down. On the next play L-M scored. During the second half the Bulldogs rammed the ball down the Bobcats’ throat with Ken Sanford going over from the four for the TD. Lionel Brooks’ con- rersion was good, giving the ’dogs a 7-6 lead, which was short-lived, as the Bobcats bounced back with another TD to lead at half- time 13-7. Brooks and Sanford led the Bulldogs in the third quarter. Crisp plunged over for another TD. The extra point tied the game at 13-13. The G-W defense with-' stood a hard-hitting and determ ined Bobcat attack. The Bulldogs capitalized on a L-M fumble in the fourth frame to gain the final and winning TD Lany Hyder was the man who pounced on Farris’ fumble. But the Bulldogs had to stiffen their defenses and withstand an other Bobcat drive before the game ended. The Bobcats moved to the G-W 18 befoer they were halted. Seek To Break 19-19 Deadlock There’ll be a heap of growlin’ when two Bulldog kennels meet tomorrow night in George Blanton Memorial Stadium at 8 o’clock.. Two rival football elevens, G-W and Wingate, battle it out to settle a 19-19 tie game played on October 14. The Bulldogs from Boiling Springs have a 1-3-2 record over-all and 1-1-2 in the Conference. The Wingate kennel has a 3-1-1 record over-all and 3-0-1 in the Conference. The G-W Bulldog win was a 19-13 game over Lees-McRae, the losses were at the hands of Chowan (6-0), Furman Fresh men (13-2), Mars Hill (13-12), and the ties were with Wingate and Lees-McRae (0-0). ENTHUSIASM Last Saturday Wingate beat Mars Hill 14-6 for their latest win. Wingate has another win over Mars Hill, one from Lees- McRaa, and a defeat from Cho- Lions Tame G-W Bulldogs 13-12 Mars Hill College Lion^ eked out a 13-12 defcision over Gard ner-Webb Bulldogs October 7. Mars Hin soared what proved to be the winning margin late in the third quarter when Buddy Postell crashed over from the two-yard line. Larry Honeycutt swept around end for the extra point. The Lions scored first when they took over the ball on their own 35-yaxd line afier the open ing kick-off. They drove 65 yards in nine plays for the TD. G-W’s first tally came with one minute, 20 seconds left in the first half It took th.a Bulldogs eight plays to score, with Bill Smarr hitting Lionel Brooks with an 11-yard aerial, to aid the cause. Harold Billings spotted Richard Bankin in the end zone for the six-pointer. The score: 6-6. LIONS DRAW BLOOD The Lions drew first blood in the third quarter, driving 80 ytards on five first downs to the G-W .tvw-yard line. On third down Postell broke through for G-W will go into the game to morrow with one of the best backfields in the league — Ken Sanford. Fnv CHsn, RHl Smnrr, and Lionel Brooks. A fine Bull dog line will pave the way for a bruising ground attack and a good passing game. Coaches Norman Harris and Bob Blackburn report that en thusiasm is high in his kennel and that the G-W Bulldogs are Eired-up and ready to show Wingate who’s boss among the Bulldogs. With less than four minutes ' remaining in the game, G-W took the ball on their own 12-yard line. Boy Crisp and Smrarr carried to the 28, and then Smarr un corked a 42-yard pass to End Larry McEntire on the Lion 28- yard marker. Several plays lat er Crisp butted his way through the line for the TD. The kick for the extra point was wide. The final score: 13-12. Underdog Pups Bulldogs To 19- The Harris-Blackburn-coached Bulldogs battled Wingate Bull dogs to a 19-19 tie October 14 at Wingate. It was homecoming for the favored kennel. Ken Sanford scored two of G- W’s TDs and passed to Lionel Brooks for the other score. Sanford tied the score early in the first quarter when he drove through the left side of the Win gate line and ran aVer two tack- lers, completing a 20-yard TD run. Wingate scored fiv3 plays after the opening kick-off on a 45-yard pass from QB Tommy Stewart to FB Bob Nunnery. Stev/art scored again on the next series of plays after G-W’s TD by going wide around right end. After a successful extra point try, Wingate led 13-6. BULLDOGS SCORE Wingate staged another march, but “Pee-Wee” Chrisweil inter cepted a Stewart aerial and re turned it to the 25-yard line. Brooks received a Sanford pass on the 13 and side-stepped two defenders to reach Touchdown Territory. Early in the second half Win gate recovered a G-W fumble on the G-W 16, and three plays later Stewart dashed around end from the eight-yard line for the score. G-W came back after the kick-off and marched to the Win gate one-yard line, with the help of a 30-yard pass from QB Bill Smarr to Chrisweil and some hard running by Roy Crisp and Brooks. Sanford carried the ball over tor the TD and also made good the extra point on a hand- off from Smarr, with a pass to End Larry McEntire. The score: 19-19. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, but G-W drove within the Wingate 15-yard line twice in the Icist five minutes of play. . Gardner-Webb College Bulldogs and Lees-McRae Bobcats battled to a scoreless deadlock October 21 at Banner Elk. Statistics in dicate that the Bulldogs domin ated play, but they were unable to push across a score. The Bulldogs took the first game- between these two clubs on September 30, with a 19-13 Eai-ly in the game the Bull dogs drove as far as the L-M 14-yard line before they were stopped by a fired-up Bobcat de fense. Lees-McRae’s offense spurted and stalled all day, gaining only B1 yards on the ground, compar ed with 218 for the Bulldogs. - The Bulldogs threatened to score several times in the first half but their sluggish offensive could not scrape together a scor ing punch. The half ended with G-W on the L-M 20-yard line. After Intermission, the Bull dogs made a quick drive Into the opponent’s territory before a tumble recovered by L-M called a halt to a potential TD. The Bulldogs kept the Bobcats in their own territory of the game until near the end of the third quarter, when G-W began another drive but was stopped again by a fumble. Both teams made desperate at tempts to score as the clock ran out. The Bulldog defense check ed a Bobcat drive spearheaded by Billy Birtchfield on some wide sweep plays. Leading the Bulldog defense were Lionel Brooks, Ken Sanford, Edgar Cox, Enoch McCarter, Jer ry Campbell, and Calvin White.
