Capture Brevard in 74-62 Overtime Thursday Night
Bulldogs Hold .500 Record For
Gardner-Webb Bulldogs travel to North Greenville to
night for a game at 7:30 o’clock, after trimming a favored
Brevard College cage team 74-62 Thursday night. The Bull
dogs held on to their fourth place standing in the Conference
and evened their record for the season at 7-7, with 4-4 of it
in the Conference.

Mike Pearson was the big man
for G-W, getting 19 points. Phil
Woodruff was second high with
16. Ronnie Robinson had 12,
Steve Daves 11.
From the opening whistle G-W
held command of the game, pick
ing up a 15-1 lead before CC
could even hit from the floor.
Pearson hit 10 field goals in the
first quarter to give G-W a 21-5
lead. The home team had a 36-19
lead at intermission.
G-W hit on 15 of 21 from the
floor for a 79 per cent in the
second quarter.
High man for Charlotte was
Ronnie Greene, with 21, trailed
by Marshall Greene with seven.

second half rally to win the tilt
66-60.
The Warriors matched the
Bulldogs point for point in the
first half until Gardner-Webb’s
Terry Byrd scored a field goal
to putG-W ahead 22-20 with 2:05
remaining on the clock.
During the second half Gard-
ner-Webb pulled ahead gradu
ally and at one time held a nine-
point lead.
Mike Kelly was high man for
the opponents with 17 points.
Gardner-Webb had three
guards hitting in double figures.
Byrd was top man for the ’dogs
with 15 points, hitting on nine
of 10 fvee tlirows. Woodruff gath
ered 14, Tommy Simmons had

G-W forged ahead for the first
time in the game with 7:33 left
on the clock, when Phil Wood
ruff made good on a three-point
play — 56-55. Then with only
2:01 left and with G-W trailing
by five markers, Gordon John
son hit on two field goals to pull
the ’dogs within one point.
Robinson, who led the team
with 17, tied the regulation game
at 65-65.
G-W rebounding was a key
factor in their outstanding play,

swiftness, outscored Brevard Col
lege 20-8 in an overtime to win
the Conference battle 74 - 62
Thurs-day night.
The Bulldogs were led by four
men hitting in double figures,
with Ronnie Robinson taking
scoring honors for the night
with 25. Steve Daves connected
for 17, Mike Pearson 13, and Phil
Woodruff 12.
Brevard took an early 6-1 lead
before Gardner-Webb scored from
the floor. Then Robinson hit two
straight field goals and Wood
ruff contributed an easy lay-up
to put G-W out front 7-6 . . and
the battle was on.
The consistent rebounding ef
forts cf Pearson ^d Robinson
and the smooth floor play of the
Bulldogs put them out front 15-9
at the end of the first quarter.
Brevard came back strong in
the second quarter to tie the
game at 27-27 at intermission.
Leading the way for the moun
tain team was Donnie Harris and
Huntley, who banged away at
the net from the floor.
The second half was a defen
sive tug-o’-war, with both teams
waiting only for good shots from
the floor. A basket-for-a-basket
contest resulted In the 54-54 tie
when the clock ticked out.
In the overtime, the Bulldogs

hit eight of nine from the floor
and connected on four of four
from the line, while Brevard
struggled for eight points — tot
