February, 1963 THE PILOT Page Seven FRESHMEN CLASS OFFICERS On The Bookshelf By Jecoa Norton Wilma Dykeman, The Tall Woman, New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1962. The action of this latest book by Wilma Dykeman takes place in the mountains of iiortn Carolina during the time of the Civil War. The hardships of Lydia McQueen seem very real to the read er, and she is vividly portrayed. Other characters in the book also come alive for the reader. In the first chapter Lydia makes her choice of a husband against the advice of her parents, and the suspense that begins in the opening pages keeps the reader awake most of the night unwilling to stop reading until he finds out what happens next. Not until the very end is the outcome revealed. The student with a research paper due within the week should not check The Tall Woman out of the library because he will not be able to put it aside until the very last page is read. After com pleting the book, the reader will find himself meditating on the mountain saying found at the beginning of the book—“A tall woman casts a long shadow.” Many students will wish to read the book in prep aration for the coming of Wilma Dykeman to the {Gard ner) Webb campus, April 22-25. As part of the program of the arts, Wilma Dykeman will be our writer in resi dence during our first Fine Arts Festival. She will be on the campus from Sunday through Wednesday.
