Ronnie Frieze Breaks Gardner-Webb Track Records
BOILING SPRINGS — Ronnie Frieze of Gastonia is
rapidly developing into one of the best, if not the best,
distance runners in the Western Carolinas Junior College
Athletic Conference. To date, the Gardner-Weibb squad
has participated in two meets. Although the team as a
group has not showed well, Ronnie has been a standout
in both meets, winning all four races that he has enter-
ed.
At a triangular meet held at Brevard College, Ronnie
defeated runners from Wofford College and Brevard Col
lege in both the mile and 2 mile races. Two days later,
Ronnie again won the mile and 2 mile races in adual
meet at Wingate College.
Ronnie’s winning times at Wingate of 4:40 in the
mile and 10:44 in the 2 mile were both Gardner-Webb
track records.
The WCJCAC record for the mile is 4:33. The record
for the 2 mile is 10:37.1. With the season still young,
Ronnie has an excellent chance of equalling or bettering
these times.
When asked about Ronnie. Coach Spencer of G-W
said, “Ronnie is a dedicated bov who is willing to pay
the iprice for victory. As yet, Ronnie hasn’t really been
pushed. With each race, he seems to improve. If he con
tinues to improve, at his present rate, he should definite
ly be a threat to the conference mile and 2 mile records.”
We Have A Golf Team, Too!
This year Gardner-Webb has, for the first time,
placed a golf team into conference competition. Part of
an expanding G-W athletic program, the team is coached
by Mr. Garland Allen.
Though the team suffered a defeat by a fine Win
gate team in its initial outing, its over-all chances for
success seem promising. The squad is anchored by a
trio of freshman golfers who should be able to gain
vastly needed experience this season.
Sophomores listed on the roster are: Frank Shytles,
Lynn Featherstone, and Tommy Bowen.
Freshmen included are: Bobby Rice, Bill Blackburn,
and Jimmy Lyda.
