THE PI LOT November, 1963 DEBATERS HAVE TOURNAMEHT Our debate team has recently returned from their first tournament of the year. As usual, they gleaned a fair share of the victories. Here is the account of the tour nament as given by a local newspaper. “The Gardner-Webb debaters came away from the recent Davidson Warm-Up Debate Tournament with five victories. The Gardner-Webb affirmative team of Bob Tribbett of Piqua, Ohio, and Bob Price of Cliffside defeated nega tive teams from Lynchburg College and Western Carolina College. The Gardner-Webb negative team of David Washburn of Boiling Springs, and Wally Tyser of Gas tonia defeated affirmative teams Davidson, Wingate, and Western Carolina College. The tournament was won by Washington and Lee University, with second place going to Duke University and the third place to the University of North Carolina. The Gardner-Webb negative team was fourth in negative points behind the three top trophy winning teams, scor ing a total of 180 points. The question debated was the national collegiate de bate query: “Resolved, that the federal government should guarantee higher education to all qualified high school graduates.” The Gardner-Webb debaters are now getting for their next tournament in the Carolina Forensics Tournament at the University of South Carolina, November 14-16. The Gardner-Webb team is coached by F. B. He came to Gardner-Webb in June of 1962, from the presidency of Pineland College Edwards Military Insti tute at Salemburg, N. C. He had served as president of the school since 1957 except for 1958 when he was Exec utive Secretary of the Methodist College Foundation at Fayetteville. . . , ^ ^ ^.u A native of Ilkins, West Virginia, he attended the public schools there and graduated from high school in 1938. He earned his B.S. degree from Davis Elkms Col lege in 1942. Appalachian State Teachers College award ed him the M.A. Degree in 1955 with a ma.ior in educa tion. He has done additional graduate work at East Caro lina College at Greenville, North Carolina. While in college, Mr. Isner held membership m Chi Beta Phi, National Scientific Fraternity, and v/as listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities nis senior year. Also, he served as laboratory assistant in Biology and Zoology for three years. In 1942 he entered military service in the Army and graduated from Officers Training School as a 2nd Lt. After attending three medical supply schools he was assigned as Medical Supply Officer at four different bases. He was honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of 1st Lt. . , . . j 4.,. n After his discharge from the Army, he .lomed the Il kins, West Virginia branch office of the Lincoln Service Corp of Washington, D. C., and remained until 1951 when he resigned to enter the educational field. Mr. Isner ioined the faculty of Wingate College in 1952 and served a head of the Department of Biology for five years. Other areas of service at Wingate included 2 years as Director of Admissions and Student Recruit ment five years as Director of Guidance and Counseling, and Dean of Men from 1953 until 1957, when he resigned to Pineland College as President. He is an active member of the Boiling Springs Bap tist Church and holds membership in the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs. He also belongs to the Masons and Elks He is married to the former Linda Lee McTyre of Wingate, who is a graduate of New London High School, and attended Wingate College. She served as Bursar at Wingate for four years. They have three sons, Bobby, 17; Chuckle, 12; and Davey, 3. THE CANDLE OF WISDOM THE PHI THETA KAPPA The Phi Theta Kappa is the national-honorary- scholastic fraternity for junior colleges. It is equivalent to the high school’s Beta Club and tr Phi Beta Kappa. The division on Lambda Omega Chapter. To enter the gates of this fraternity you must have a 3.2 quality point average, and you niust maintain a 3.0 average. In addition, leadership ability, character, and service are also taken into consideration. The new members of the fraternity are to be con gratulated for their outstanding achievements—achieve ments acquired through diligent study and hard work. It is certainly considered an honor for each of these who have attained such recognition. Those "tapped” into the Phi Theta Kappa on October 23, 1963, are as follows; 1. Shirley White 2.
