This school would have closed many, many times if it had not been for such people as J. H. Quinn, E. B. Hamrick, J. D. Huggins, and Miss Etta Curtis. Founders Day is observed annually for the purpose of paying tribute to these and many other peo ple who made great sacrifices to see this college survive through the years. This year Founders Day will be held on Saturday, Novem ber 6th. The tentative pro gram is as follows: 11:30 A.M. Joint Meeting of Alumni Offi cers which are Dan W. Moore, Jr., ’39, of Boiling Springs, President; Mps. Nancy An thony Griffin, ’53, of Boiling Springs, Secretary - Treasurer, and also presidents of Lo c a I Chapters, and Alumni Commit tee of the faculty. 1:00 P. M. — Founders Day Luncheon honoring the families Sisters Record by Bill Wiggins' Saturday night at half-time of the Homecoming game with Chowan, one of the following five finalists will be chosen as our Homecoming Queen: Betty Austin, Celeste Ball, Brenda Cabiness, Kay Martin, and Lin da M'oore. Student activities during Homecoming will begin Friday, November 5th, with a powder- p u f f football game between HAPY and Stroup at 4 :00 p.m. Following the game there will be a picnic at the supper hour at the Springs, and then entertain ment in the Hamrick Building at which time Wanda Jenkins and her sister, Donna, wll play, and also a classical quitarist will be present. At the conclu sion of this program, everyone Freshmen Elect Bufford, Nixon, And Jones As Class Officers by Marion Pitts Mike Buford of Eau Gallia, Fla., has emerged as the lead er among over 800 freshmen at Gardner-Webb College. Elected president of his class Oct. 27, the Floridian is a former resi dent of Gastonia where his family i-esided until eight years ago. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James G. Buford. Serving with the former high school star athlete, are David Nixon of Charlotte and Peggy Jones of Cary. Nixon, son of Mr. and Mrs, David Nixon, is vice-president now, adding to his duties which already includ ed BSU and Christian Volun teer Band activities. He was on the track team in high school. Miss Jones, a Chemistry ma jor, was elected secretary-treas- urer of the class. She was in the Beta Club in high school and is a member of the 'Science Club at Gardner-Webb College. The over 800 frosh gathered at the Bost Physical Education Building to begin forming an organization which will govern them in their first year of col lege. They elected Mr. W. B. Stowe, of the English Depart ment as sponsor of the class. will go for a snake rhythm dance through all the build ings. Saturday from 2:00 until 6 :00 p.m. there will be an open house for parents, visitors, and alumni. This will be a come- and-go affair with no prolonged visits so as to have enough time to complete a tour of the build ings. The decorations in HAPY and Stroup dormitories will be judged and the winner will re ceive a trophy for decorations. BETTY AUSTIN Betty Austin, nineteen-year- old daughter of Mrs. Gladys Austin and the late Mr. S. L. Austin, is a native of Spartan burg, S. C. She is a member of the B. S. U. choir, G. W en semble, and she participated in May Day activities last year. Also present at the Luncheon will be workers in the Develop ment Campaign of 1959. These workers raised over one-half million dollars. Graduates of Classes of lOofi and 1957 will be recognized. Following the luncheon, a Pro gram of Dedication for three buildings will be held in the 0. Max Gardner Building lounge. At this time the Bost Physical Education Building w;ill be dedicated by Lloyd Bost, the Lutz-Yelton Dormi tory by Paris Yelton, and the A. T. Withrow Science Build ing by A. T. Withrow. Accept ance speeches will be made by Dr. Eugene Poston, represent ing the Administration; Bart lett Dougherty, representing the student body and Lloyd Bost, representing the Trustees. 5:00-6 ;00 P. M. — Annual Homecoming Alumni Barbecue in Bost Physical Education Building. Plates are $1.30 for adults, including tax; 75c for children under 12, and children under 5 are admitted free. The menu will include barbecue, french fries, slaw, pickles, rolls, coffee and tea. G-W Coed - Singer of Ballards by Susan Praytor Just recently one of our stu dents, Miss Wanda Jenkins, and her sister Donna, a 21- year-old secretarial student at the University of South Caro lina, released a record on the “KLUB” label. Together they sing “Lesson of Love” and “Darlin’ Come to Me.” Donna sings alto and Wanda u.sually handles the melody line al though they change around with ease. Two years ago, neighbors of the Columbia, South Carolina girls had no idea of recording any of their songs. They had been singing since they were knee-high just for the fun of it, but one evening a friend of the Jenkins’ family heard them sing and asked that they come to the Custom Kecording and Sound of Greenville. Donna and Wanda went and sang for company officials who were impressed with them. A Col umbia music critic said, “The girls have something different. It’s not folk music. It’s def initely not rock ’n’ roll. It’s a sort of a popular ballad style —a contempoj-ai-y ballad souiul. It has appeal for every age group, ’ ’ Both girls play self - taught guitars — Donna, a six-string, and Wanda, a 12 string with which they accompany them selves as they sing “pages out their musical diary,” Altoge ther they have written 27 Con’t on page 2 David Langford Elected To Top Position In Sophomore Class DAVID NIXON—Vice-President by Marion Pitts David Langford of Fayette ville was elected sophomore class president Oct, 27, Lang ford, a 6-1, 225-pound tackle on the football team will serve with Steve Poston, vice-presi dent and Cecil Atchley, secre- tary-treasurer. This all-male leadership for 1965-1966 will have Mr, Paul Stacy to work with as class sponsor. Langford is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hoyle Langford of Fayetteville. He plans to at tend Wake Forest College af ter leaving Gardner-Webb. Another Wake Forest bound officer is Steve Poston, son of Dr. and Mrs, Eugene Poston. Steve is president of Phi Theta Kappa and played baseball last season. Atchley, better known as “Towhead,” is the son of Mr. and M.!rs. Cecil Shannon Atch ley of Fore.st City. A member of last year’s basketball team, Towhead is an announcer for WBBO in Forest (’ity and an asset to the college with t h e “Pigskin Preview” program and other radio work.
