Social Life: Past, Present, Mainly Future
. .Bill: I guess the main question
is what is right or wrong about
the social life of a student at
Gardner-Webb. Go ahead Bart.
Bart: I feel that the student
life of Gardner-Webb has im
proved since I have been here,
but many things can be improv
ed. This is a particularly hard
question because we don’t know
where to start on some ideas. A
lot of people would like to see
dancing and most social activi
ties like that, but most of us
know that this is contradictory to
the Baptist Convention. But I feel
that more activities could be gain
ed such as concerts for groups or
something along this line. As the
student center is finished, there
will be more places and better
facilities to have these activities.
Right now we are limited for
space to have these activities
such as playing ping-pong or
poor or anything. There is no
place for students to group and
this limits us, because we have
no place to meet, and we can’t
do anything.
Jerry: I agree with Bart. The '

Letter To The Editor: Music Appreciation?
You know, it’s a funny thing,
but a certain few on this campu.s
don’t know what’s good and
what isn’t. I’m referring to the
person or persons who deliberate
ly cut the plug off the stereo unit
in the cafeteria for the second
time. I’m under the impression
that this person thinks that as
long as he doesn’t like some
thing, he’s got the right to destroy
it for others. Well, this definite
ly is not true!! For the informa
tion of these people, there are
many who appreciate the fact
that we are able to have the mu
sic. It makes a big difference
in the atmosphere.
Yes, the
going
fixed again, and the music will
be played in the cafeteria again!
If you people don’t appreciate
it, you don’t have to come to eat.
However, I don’t think it will
happen again. Let’s hope not
anyway!

time we have been here our ac
tivities have been aroused by the
student, but I think the m a i n
problem with the social life is
the fact that students talk among
themselves, but don’t let their
interests be known to the faculty
or administration. I think this is
one problem to be overcome if
the students, as a student body,
■ want to have more activities.
They have to let their wishes be
known.
A good example of activities
we have had are those prior to
Homecoming. The show which
“Towhead” had and the groups
from Forest City did helped the
morale on campus. It was a big
boost to the social life here at
Gardner-Webb. We need more
activities such as this. These
are needed especially on week
ends.
Bill: Are any more of these be
ing planned right now? Do you
know, Bart?
Bart: We have nothing plan
ned.' I think the Freshman class
is planning something, but I
wouldn’t elaborate on it. ,
Jerry: One major problem we
have is facilities. There really is
nothing and we are too far out
from anything really.
All our groups are working
separately. We need to get to
gether and know what everyone
is doing. It would help out. All
groups should contact the Stu-
dent-Government. The Student-
Government should know about
all plans and I don’t think they
have.
Bill: Now comes a nice one.
What can be done to improve
these conditions, Bart?
Bart: Just harder work on the
part of the Student-Government.
There should be a definite time
for the Student-Government to
Bill: Got anything else, Jerry?
Jerry: A good way to solve
this is to set up a committee of
the Student-Government to plan
several events for the whole stu
dent body on several weekends
throughout the year.
Bart: Yes, they are very im
portant.
Bill: What group should be
responsible for planning these ac
tivities? We’ve covered this some
already.
Bart: The Student-Government.
Resources and money are the
problems. A five dollar activity
fee just to cover activities spon
sored by an activities group made
up of students would be a great
help. They have this, but it is
all bottled together and the
money is not allotted as such.
Bill: You mean a separate ac
tivity fee for other than what the
present fee covers.
Bart: Yes, this is needed vital
ly.
Jerry: I agree with Bart, at
least $5 or maybe $10. This is
done in a lot of major colleges
and a lot of junior colleges. If I
am correct this is done at Win
gate and Chowan. They have ac
tivities throughout the year. Well
known groups came in concert.
This is an answer to the prob
lem.
Bill: What facilities should be
used for these activities that'can
be planned, Bart?
Bart: Anything available, such
as the gymnasium. It would bo
nice for a concert of this type.
For a smaller concert, the
O.M.G. When the student cen
ter is completed it will solve most
of their problems. The adminis
tration is trying to help the stu
dents very much. They are plan
ning ahead, but right now t h e
students will not benefit as much
as those to come.
Bill: Bart, do you have any
idea what hours,the student cen
ter will be opened when it is
ready?
Bart: No, I don’t have any in
formation on that.
Bill: Do you have anything,
Jerry?
Jerry: No. The student center
should solve a lot of present
problems though the student
body can meet there, and recrea
tion facilities will be included.
Bill: Some of these are a lit
tle long range. What about us
poor people this year?
Bart: We are going to have to
suffer for the others to come. It
is not as bad if we think about it.
We’ve had a good time at G-W.
It won’t hurt us to plan for the
students coming in.
Jerry: Just think of the poor
people before us.
Bart: Yea! (laughing)
Jerry: We have it a lot better
than those before us.
Bill: Is there anything we can
do this year to plan activities?
Bart: Just harder work is all I
can say.
Bill: And have everyone work
ing together instead of separate
ly. Got anything else, Bart?
Bart: We are not -degrading
the faculty and administration.
They are doing a fine job and
they understand the views of the
students, but these are just some
opinions we have that would
help.
