Bulldogs' Clinch Championship

Gardner-Webb College’s Bull
dogs defeated Brevard Junior
College 51-59 on Feb. 16 to win
the WCJCAC Conference Cham
pionship. This is the first time in
the School’s history that the bas
ketball team has won the confer
ence crown. The victory, which
gave the Bulldogs a 11-1 confer
ence record, came at Brevard and
avenged an earlier defeat by Bre
vard in Bost Gymnasii
The Bulldogs got off to a slow
start and fell behind 10-4 with
!5:47 left in the first half. Bnl
the shooting of Dennis Childress,
and Kenny Beam and the defen
sive play of Butch Rogers broughi
the Bulldogs back and gave them
the lead at 13-12 with 13:23 re
maining in the first period.
Brevard staged a comeback in
the closing minutes of the con Uear

Gardner-Webb vs. Kings
The Gardner - Webb Bulldogs
visited Park Center of Charlotte
Feb. 17 and handed the cagers of
Kings College a 100-67 defeat.
The victory increased the Bull
dogs record to 18-4 and gave
them two 100 plus games against
Kings this season. Dennis Chil
dress had an off-night but still
led all scorers with 23 pointb.
Beam, Morrow and Bridges also
scored in double figures with 14.

Dennis “Chile” Childress shat
tered the school scoring record on
Feb. 12 as he pumped in 46
points against Anderson Junior
College as the Bulldogs routed
the Rebels 99-66.
Chile hit on 30 of 31 attempts
from the floor and had a perfect
6 for 6 from the charity stripe.
The old record of 41 was also
set by Childress against Lees-Mc-
Rae earlier in the season. The
shooting of Childress and Kenny
Beam vaulted the Bulldogs to a
46-25 first period lead and they
continued to increase this lead
for the rest of the game.

Gardner - Webb blasted Win

strong outside shooting of Kenny
Beam and Dennis Childress to
keep pace in the WCJCAC title
race. The victory kept the Bull
dogs tied for first place with Bre
vard and placed the Feb. 17 meet
ing between these two teams in
the spotlight. Wingate, which fell
68-66 to the Bulldogs on Jan. 18,
simply picked the wrong night to
visit Bost Gymnasium. The Bull
dogs ran away from Wingate in
the first half on their way to
their sixth 100+ game this year.

19 games. The Bulldogs surpass
ed the century mark for the 8th
time this season as they placed
five players in double figures.
Chile once again led the team in
scoring as he flipped in 36
points. Butch Rogers 10, Joel Car
roll 13, and Drew Bridges 18.

Gardner-Webb vs. Brevard
The Brevard Tornadoes threw
the WCJCAC Conference race
for first place into a tie as they
handed G-W its first conference
loss in 9 attempts February 8, in
the Bost Gymnasium 71-66. Bre
vard used their strong men to
control the boards and score con
sistently from inside. Only two
Bulldogs hit in double figures
with Dennis Childress and Kenny
Beam scoring 30 and 10 points
respectively. Brevard used a bal
anced attack and received over
10 points from five players. Both
G-W and Brevard have now lost
one game in conference play.
Intramural action has been fast this year. Above, Leon Boyd rebounds
and starts the Third Floor New Dorm ‘S’ fast break against the Day
Students No. 1 team. The Day Students prevailed, however, 30-26.
Both teams were in hot contention for the intramural championship.

The North Greenville Mounties
threw a scare into the Bulldogs
home fans on Feb. 5, as they gave
the home boys a tough game
North Greenville led for the first

tured the advantage for the Bull
dogs. North Greenville came
back to take a 41-39 lead at the
halfway mark. Chile netted a free
throw to put the Bulldogs in the

Gardner - Webb had to fight
back to overcome a first half,
seven point deficit on Feb. 1, to
defeat Spartanburg Junior Col
lege 68-60 in the Pioneers home
gym. Joel Carroll brought t h e
slipping Bulldogs back with bis
inside play and cut Spartanburg
lead to one point, 35-34 at the
half. Kenny Beam pumped in I 1
points in the second stanza to
lead the Bulldogs to their sixth
straight conference win. Carroll
led all scorers with 22 points
while Beam assisted him with 16

Gardner-Webb College’s Bull
dogs avenged their first defeat of
the year, at the hands of North
Greenville [unior College, when
they visited the Mounties’ home
court Jan. 27 and defeated them
72-59. The victory stretched the
Bulldogs undefeated conference
record to 5-0, and gave them a
stronger hold on the top rung of
the WCJCAC ladder. Dennis
Childress netted 27 points to lead
all scorers. Kenny Beam added 13
and Butch Rogers contributed

Gymnasium, was nip and tuck

nearly 600 yelling fans, who
made the trip, determined to
cheer Gardner-Webb to the top
rung of the WCJCAC ladder,
Childress pumped in 30 points to
lead all scorers. Joel Carroll and
Kenny Beam also hit in double
figures for the Bulldogs.

Bobcats of Lees-McRae College
98-85 in overtime. The Bobcats
gave Gardner - Webb a contest
during the regulation game but
the Bulldogs, led by Childress’ 14
points in overtime, outscored
L-M 20 to 7 in the extra period.
Childress netted 41 points to lead
all scorers. Kenny Beam and
Bruce Morrow added 13 each to
the scoreboard.

trounced Montreal Anderson
137-51. The Bulldogs placed
seven players in double figures as
they scored a record 61 fiell
Joell Carroll, shooting over a Spartanburg defender, has been a big cog
in the G-W attack this year. His scoring and clutch rebounding have
been invaluable.
