Capable Officers Lead Student Government

BULLDOG CO-CAPTAINS CHOSEN—Gardner-Webb College’s
dogs have chosen their co-captains to lead them through the season.
Chosen by the team to serve in this capacity are Bobby Spain, left, and
Foster McLane. Spain, a 6’, 195 lb. sophomore from Charlotte, will
start at the fullback spot on offense and also see some action on de
fense, Spain is active around the campus and is President of the Student
Government Association. McLane, a 6’ 1”, 205 lb. sophomore, is from
Abbeville, S. C. McLane will start at the tackle position on both of
fense and defense.
Gardner-Webb’s classes are now
in full operation and the Student
Government Association has met.
The “Pilot” now endeavors to help
you know your student government
officers better and to give you some
insight into their personalities.
Student government president this
year is Robert Spain, a 19 year old
sophomore from Charlotte. “Bobby”
as he is called by his friends is cur
rently taking 17 hours including,
English, Biology, History, Geogra
phy, and Speech. Bobby plans to
attend the University of North Car
olina at Chapel Hill after graduat
ing from Gardner-Webb. As yet, he
has not decided about his future oc
cupation. A member of the foot
ball team and Monogram Club, he
clean-up on the part of students.

Gardner-Webb.”
Vice - president of the student
body is Cleve Raefield, a 19 year
old sophomore from Stanly. He is
carrying a load of 17 semester hours
and is taking Sociology, Psychology,
English, Biology, Speech, and Phy
sical Education. Cleve plans a ma
jor in Education at Belmont-Abbey
College after graduation from Gard-
ner-Webb. His future occupation is
coaching. Cleve, a member of the
basketball team, sees the need for
more social life here. His state
ment to the student body was that
the student government officers
would do their best to help students
at Gardner-Webb College.
Secretary-Treasurer of the student
body, Linda Newman, a 19 year old
sophomore from Charlotte, is car
rying a load of 16 semester hours.
She is taking English, Physical Edu
cation, Spanish Literature, Religious
Education, Sociology, and Psycholo
gy. She plans a major in Sociology
at Carson-Newman College after
graduating from Gardner - Webb.
Her plans are to enter social work
or home missions. Linda is a mem
ber of the BSU, CVB, BSU Choir,
and the student government associa
tion. In the way of improvements,
Linda sees the need for more par
ticipation in activities we have at
Gardner-Webb, although she feels
social life. She thinks students
should work together to make Gard-
ner-Webb a better school for every
body and one we can all be proud
of. Her

body is: “As student government of
ficers, we were elected to be lead
ers on campus and work for the
students. As Secretary-Treasurer 1
pledge myself to do my best for
Gardner-Webb and to help all stu
dents in any way 1 can.”
As for their plans for Gardner-
Webb this year, all three agreed
that they were going to try to in
crease weekend social life for the
students. If they succeed Gardner-
Webb will have been improved by
their year in office.
