PAGE 2 THE PILOT OCTOBER 7, 1966 School Off To Good Start This has been a banner year for Gardner-Webb College. Although the school year is only in its sixth week, there have been many valuable experiences, both for the students, faculty and administration. Freshman have settled down and are adjusting to the atmosphere of college life. They have discovered this experience is different from what they had originally believed. The “Pilot” believes in patting someone on the back when the per son or persons deserves recognition. There have been deeds which we feel should be commended. We commend the faculty for being patient with the students these first few days, and for genuinely trying to help the students adjust. The administration also has attempted to help the students. We remember Mrs. Hamrick’s patience in registration; Mr. Bridges’ consultation, and Mr. Holland’s aid. We gratefully thank the administration for the part they played in bringing the Town Criers to Gardner-Webb. This pro gram will remain in the minds of students for the entire year. We ask only that the faculty and administration continue to try to under stand students. Students are also to be praised. The courtesy they have shown in trying times has been appreciated. We recognize those who have helped bring entertainment to the campus. We are proud of the way the stu dents have thus far used the new facilities which have been provided. The use of the new Charles I. Dover Campus Center has been good. The building has in most instances received respectable use. We would thank students who have recently displayed the flag in such a fine manner. Re cently we noticed this national symbol being mistreated, but a conscien tious student has taken care of this. We, as a final word, would make you aware of one fact. Gardner- Webb College has been known in the past for fine school spirit. This is a tradition. It is a tradition which must be carried on. When the Bulldogs take the field Saturday night against Chowan to open our new stadium, we would like to see every student present. Also, if you are a true Bulldog you will make your presence known. Let’s see how many “Bulldogs” we have. LITTLE MAN ON CAMPUS Wf ?? THE RIGHT TO DISSENT — The right to disagree publicly is one of the privileges of a free society. Many a wise and articulate dissenter has changed an unfair law into a fair law. Science, medicine, politics, business, the most personal of human relationships are propelled into for ward progress by rentless dissenters. But when you take to the soap box of minority opinion, remember that any new idea is easy to talk about but hard to sell. The decibels of your voice and the theatrics of your behavior are poor substitutes for the logic of your persuasion and the soundness of your arguments. i Hardin ' 'Tev TO PE ON TlMe,AAI$5 UMONr WHEN you CaNAf IN LATg IT Pl6TUKg5 TH WHOLE CLASS." By Judy Hardin A game of Bridge anyone? Since activities are limited for the girls on campus. Bridge has become a time consumer and a favorite past time for many of them. So if you see the midnight oil burning on weekends, you can be sure it is a rousing game of innocent Bridge. HOMECOMING Congratulations to the faculty for chosing such a lovely ar ray of beauties as candidates for Homecoming Queen. Since the football players are the ones who really work for this special event, they will surely be pleased with their reward. LETTERS PLEASE Let “The Pilot” know your ideas and viewpoints about cam pus life. Write a letter to the editor. Keep it clean with the facts based on truth and “The Pilot” will greatly appreciate it. As Bob Spain, President of the Student Government, says: “One cannot change anything until one challenges it.” THE FLAG We are very proud of the fact that the American flag has flown faithfully everyday on our campus. Thank you, Dean Hol land. TOWN CRIERS The performance of “The Town Criers” was a huge success and a large majority of the students feel that Mr. Hill and Mr. Vaughn are due a vote of thanks.
