Burgess Will Lecture On E.S.P. To Be Held In Bost Gymnasium
The fine arts program will present
a very interesting program for the
students on January 16 when Russ
Burgess presents a lecture on Extra
Sensory Perception.
Burgess is a master at E.S.P. as
well as telepathy, thought control,
and precognition. He has formerly
worked with the Department of Jus
tice and i5_very widely known for
his lectures on E.S.P.
This new concept in communi
cation is rapidly gaining interest all
over the world. The United States
Army and Navy and numerous in
dustries are experimenting with it
and the Space Program is attempting
to develop the idea. Russia has
named the concept as one of its pri
mary objectives.
Burgess’ program features h i s
reading unspoken thoughts of the
audience with a knowledge beyond
belief. Audience participation is one
of the most essential requirements
for a successful performance.
Burgess has stated that one week
prior to his appearance, he will
mail a letter telling what the head
lines in the local papers will say
concerning his appearance.
This should be a performance that
the students as well as the members
of the faculty will thoroughly enjoy.
The program will start at 8 p.m. in
the E. B. Hamrick Auditorium.
Gardner-Webb College and Bost
Gymnasium will be the scene of a
first rate junior college basketball
tournament December 16-17 when
four nationally prominent teams
clash. The teams will be Ferrum of
Ferrum, Va., Cumberland of Leban
on, Tenn., Brewton-Parker of Mt.
Vernon, Ga., and Gardner-Webb
College’s Bulldogs.
Pairings for the event will see
Gardner-Webb face Brewton-Parker
in the opening round and Ferrum
play Cumberland. The winners of
the first round will meet for the
championship Saturday night with
the losers playing the preliminary
contest.
Brewton - Parker is always con
sidered a powerhouse in junior col
lege basketball and is off to another
successful season. At press time the
team had a 7-2 record and had
scored 100 or more points on three
occasions. The Blue Barons played
a two game series with North
Greenville Junior College, the team
considered by many as the team to
beat in our own WCJCAC Con
ference, losing the first 94-82 and
then stopping North Greenville 67-
64 in the rematch.
Ferrum is a team well-known to
many Gardner-Webb supporters.
Ferrum was the team that defeated
Gardner-Webb in the Region 10
Tournament at Lenoir last year to
win a trip to the national finals.
Ferrum this year features an un
defeated season through their first
four ballgames with impressive vic
tories over the freshman squads of
VPI and The University of Virginia.
Jerry Venable, a freshman from
Staunton, Va., broke the school
scoring record against Virginia’s
Freshmen with 44 points.
Cumberland is usually a strong
team although no information is
available on their team at this time.
They finished lastyear’s season rank
ed 9th in the nation.
The Bulldogs are off to their best
start under head coach Eddie Hol
brook as they are undefeated after
six games. This is surprising con
sidering the number of freshmen
playing on this year’s team.
The Bulldogs will have the home
court advantage to go with the play
of Laurence “Sonny” Johnson, Drew
Bridges, David Brown, Karl Neilson,
Rudy Reeves and George Poston.
Reigning over the tournament as
Queen wil be Miss Terry Baynes.
Her attendants will be Sandy Lucus
and Barbara Straughn.
The tickets will be $2.00 for
adults and SI.00 for students. Stu
dents will not be admitted on their
I. D. cards.
We hope the students will remain
and support the Bulldogs.
