PAGE 4 GARDNER-WEBB COLLEGE, THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 1969 ‘^‘^Super-cooV and Very SuccessfuV^ Gardner-W ebb sponsored her second annual Preaching Clinic to which 23 ministerial students from all over North and South Carolina attended. The clinic was held during the week of August 18-22, and was conducted by Reverend Charles W. Freeman (class of 1962) the College Minister. The purpose of the clinic was expressed by Reverend Freeman when he said, “My desire is to help the minis terial students of GWC get op portunities to preach on Sun days. This coming school year the Kings Mountain Baptist As sociation, Broad River Baptist Association, South Fork Bap tist Association, and the Blue Ridge Baptist Association have set aside a Sunday in which the churches will invite a GWC ministerial student to preach. In order to do this our students need to know the basic funda mentals of sermon preparation and the delivery of sermons. This week of study will give the student lectures on sermon pre paration, research in the li brary, observing ministers as they deliver a sermon, and then preaching a sermon to the class which will be constructively criticized by the students.” Reverend Freeman gave twelve lectures (14 hours) deal ing with the preacher, his ser mon and his delivery of the sermon. Four outstanding speakers participated in the clinic outlining a sermon and then preaching the sermon to the class. The speakers were Reverend Max J. Evington, (class of 1958), Pastor of Plea sant Ridge Baptist Church, Dr. Dan Proctor, Director of Gui dance of GWC, Reverend C. 0. Greene, Superintendent of the Kings Mountain Baptist Assoc iation, and Dr. Furman Hewitt, Associate Professor of Reli gion at GWC. The purpose of their sermons was to illustrate the sermon in outline and then let the students see the sermon attaining its purpose through the dynamics and personality of the speaker. A very interesting statistic: Gardner-Webb has more minis terial students than any other Baptist College in North Caro lina and some in South Caro lina and Florida. Faculty Members Get Organized A chapter of the American Association of University Pro fessors has been organized at Gardner-Webb College as a part of the senior college program. Faculty members formed the organization as part of expand ing professionalism and as an opportunity to take advantage of the assistance the AAUP gives in the improvement of teaching. Dr. Tom Ballard was elected president of the group which will hold its first official meet ing in early September. Dr. Furman Hewitt is vice-presi dent, Ernest Blankenship is se- cretary-treasurer and Dr. Ak- sel NeUson is a member of the executive committee. Dr. E. Eugene Poston, pre sident of the college and Tho mas J. McGraw, vice presi dent in charge of academic affairs will be guest speak ers at the September meeting. Dr. Ballard stated, “The AAUP is to the college teach ing profession what the AMA is to the medical profession and we are glad that the national organization and the college administration approved of this chapter’s organization.” Only teaching faculty may be members although administra tors may gain associate mem bership without voting privi leges. Librarians are allowed full membership. The Familiar Rack Of Dirty Trays Hey Frosh, your car is legal the Many G. W. students will be able to experience of being without a car while in college. Those students who ore^fiously attendedG.W.C. knew the agony. As many of_ them remember from the Parking and Traffic P.egula- tions pampWet, “No freshman boarding students (first or sec ond semester) shall park, dr ive, or otherwise keep a ve hicle at Gardner-Webb College. Anyone keeping a vehicle on the campus must mainta-'n a 2.0 Quality Point Ratio.” now, the rules have changed! The fall fashion for ’69 is in favor of ‘wheels’for everyone. All students are al lowed cars if they are properly registered. The traffice con trol of G.W.C. considers the principle of driving to be a privilege, and those returning students who walked a great deal will not abuse this pri vilege. The students is the ben eficiary of the new rules, and he can give thanks to the Traf fic Regulators for giving him Pop’s second car. The Clary sisters of Gaffney, South Carolina wUl appear on GW campus on Saturday night, August 30, 1969 at the annual luau. Accompanying them will be the current Miss Gaffney There’s Real Group Fun With New Aqua Scooters What does the owner of a revolutionary new water craft do. with his vehicle? He begins to use his imagination and soon finds himself asking, “What can’t I do with it?” This is the happy plight of an 3'iu=' scooter ow-’."- Since aqua scooters are new on the recreational scene, there is no single activity for which the craft is being purchased. Nor was it designed tor a limited number of uses. Owners are constantly coming up with new uses, both utilitarian and recreational. The largest budget in the history of Gardner-W'ebb College was approved this past May by the Board of Trustees. The college will operate on a $2,200,000 budget in 1969-70 - a $600,000 increase from 1968-69. Around 20 Baptist Student Union members returned to school early for a pre-school planning retreat. The theme of the retreat: “Living for Jesus”. New Names: Mrs. Hamrick is now Mrs. Edwards! Former Dean of Women Nancy Sorrells became Mrs. Jim Gardner. Congratulations. Mrs. “Pinkerton” Howell, a favorite among the students, has assumed asday-time role as campus cop. Having learned G. W. by moonlight, Mr. Howell is beginning to associate faces with silhouettes. Rent-a-cop Mr. Hinson is replacing him on night duty. Local gossip on G. W. changes: Girl talk seems to center around the new improvements in the Campus Center. The unsolicited comments from the faculty lean toward the general direction that the improvements cost a bundle. According to the report from a post office official, all student mail must be picked up this year through a box in the Boil ing Springs Post Office or by general delivery there. Reasons given wero ::iat due to the lack of sufficient funds needed to increase to federal specifications those workers who put out mail in the C. I. D. boxes , school officials asked the Boiling Springs P. 0. to handle all mail. Boxes in the C.I.D. will be used for inter-campus mail only. All students must rent P. 0. boxes in Boiling Springs or make other arrange ments. Part Of Space Capsule Now In Boiling Springs A small part of space ex ploration history is now in Boiling Springs. M. A. Mose ley, jovial chemistry profes sor at Gai-dner-Webb, has a part of the Apollo 8 space cap sule which was the first U. S., man-controlled ship to circle the moon. The heat seared portion of the capsule’s front sheath was given to Professor Moseley by his sister, Mrs. Mai Cerney of the University of Cincinnati. Mrs. Cerney received the bored core part of the sheath from an engineer at the Aeronia Cor poration in Middleton, Ohio. Light brown in color, the core is constructed of a honeycomb of foil filled with compressed asbestos and the whole unit is then compressed into a hard unit. It is extremely light in weight and approximately one and one-half inch in thickness. Moseley states that this one of many core samples has been tested by technicians for heat resistance, stress, etc. AROUND TOWN .. _ ing around with a group. The new aqua scooters can spin, jump, slalom, and otherwise provide playful enjoyment. The raft also are excellent scuba living platforms.
