Shaw Sings For GW Coffee-House Gardner-Webb students will have the opportunity to hear Marlena Shaw in concert. On Tuesday September 22, at 8:00 p.m. In Bost Gymnasium. In 1968 , Miss Shaw joined the ranks of Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson and handful of su per stars when DOWNBEAT magazine voted the lovely 28- year old singer “most promis ing vocalist”. Marlena is delivering the promises, for she has recent ly tested for the starring role in the upcoming film on the life of Billie Holiday, She turned down the offer to appear per manently on the television ser ies “Laugh In” in order to pursue her career as a solo performer, and she has just completed a successful 28-city tour of Europe. Marlena Shaw sang for two years w.ith the Count Basie Or chestra, and the last time she appeared in Las Vegas, she was the featured performer and the Basie orchestra backed her. Her television credits in clude stints on the Merv Griff in Show, Dick Cavett Show and the Woody Woodbury Show. Mrs. Doris Banner She has recorded two albums for Cadet, and her single re cords have often made the char ts. Starring club dates for Mar lena Shaw have included Play boy in New York, Pain Street in San Francisco, Mister Kel ly’s in Chicago, The Flamingo in Las Vegas and Harran’s in Reno. Accompanying Marlena Shaw will be Loonis McGlohon one of North Carolinas best known pia- nist-composer. His recordings and his songs make him known to radio audiences in major rad io markets across the nation. More recently Loonis McGlohon wrote the musical score for “Land of Oz”, also the theme for the “Love ValleyRockFes- tival.” The Loonis McGlohon or chestra includes nine musicians and they have performed in con cert with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra during the 1970 spring tour. Doris Banner To Teach In GW Math Dept. Mrs. Doris V. Banner is a recent addition to the fac ulty of Gardner-Webb’s Math- matics Department. Mrs. Ban ner received her B.S. degree and her Master’s degree from Applachian State University. She has done further study at the University of North Carolina. A native of Jackson County, NX. Mrs. Banner is coming to Gardner-Webb from a teach ing position with the Buncombe County Board of Public Instr uction. She is the wife of Mr. Luther Banner our new Assis tant Director of Students Aff- PEM Starts Spirit Cup The Physical Education Ma jors Club of Gardner-Webb Col lege is initiating an award this year to be presented to the or ganization or dormitory which shows the best school spirit and backing of studentactivities for the entire year. Presentation of the cupto Dr. Poston was made on September 8, by George Spencer, presi dent of the club. The competition will be jud ged by the President of the Col lege, Athletic Director, Direc tor of Student Affairs, Presi dent of the Student Government Association, President of the Men’s Affairs Council, and Pre sident of the Women’s Affairs Board. The award will be presented by the President of the college in early May. Each yearthe or ganization or dormitory whkh receives the award will have it’s name inscribed upon the award. The Roteract club’s purpose is for its members to have “acceptance of high ethical sta ndards in all occupations, to develop leadership and respon sible citizenship through ser vice to the community, and to promote international underst anding and peace.” The Roteract club participat es in three areas of activiti es: vocational, community, and international. The officers of this year’s Roteract Club are as follows: President-Mike Hensley; Vice- President-Jerry Ruppo; and Secretary- Treasurer- Kemp Savage. Counselors For Women's Dorms Set By WAB The Women’s Affairs Board has adopted a new constitution which was approved by the ad ministration and the trustees. The constitution provides for the choosing of senior girls to assist as couselors in the women’s residences. The foll owing students were chosen as counselors for this coming ye ar by the Assistant Director of Student Affairs, the Director of Student Affairs, and the dor mitory directors: Wanda Sud- dreth, Nanney; Judy Hannah, H. A.P.Y.; Susan Broadway, H.A. P.Y.; and Martha Bryan, Str oup. Concerning dormitory clos ing hours, women students have been granted more freedoms and privileges at Gardner-Webb College. These hours have been extended over the previous closing hours. Gymnasium and library hours have been exten ded for women students. Also, Juniors and Seniors with a 2.0 may date off campus Monday through Thursday until 11:00 Drama Will Set Hero vs. Baddie And Add Music Tryouts have been held and parts have been cast for the play PURE AS THE DRIVEN SNOW which will be present ed in the Opera House Theatre during the month of October. Performance will be given at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Thur sday, Friday, and Saturday, October 15, 16, and 17. Admis sion to the old-fashioned melo drama will be $1.50 for adults and 75C for students. Students and faculty of Gardner-Webb will be admitted on their id entification cards. Anyone interested in Ro teract, please come to this 3 From GW In Statewide BSU Keg Alexander, Mike Shook and Dan Synder will be repre senting Gardner-Webb in the Baptist Student Union state cou ncil convening at Camp Mun- do Vista October 2-4. In add ition to business meetings the council will discuss the theme, “from passive concern to act ive involvement.” This theme will be considered from the viewpoint of the different sch ools involved. Students will also be invol ved in a “talk-back” session with local chaplains and the sta te officers. Two groupdiscuss- ions with students from sch ool which have chaplains and from schools which work with the student department in Ral eigh are also planned. The in terchange as to how each sees their role can prove helpful in giving a broader perspective of the function of the Baptist Student Union.
