PAGE 4 THE PILOT. TUESDAY. SEPT. 22, 1970, GARDNER-WEBB COLLEGE Bulldog quarterback Ray Hannon (11) looks downTield for a re ceiver against LR. Hannon has plenty of time behind the blocking of offensive tackle Jim Becks (78) and center Larry Blackwell (58). GW Holds LR 27-14 Under Hannon’s Com “We’re not kidding our selves, we know what lies a- head. We’renotgoingonthefield with the attitude that we’re just getting started and not sup posed to win. We intend to give a few lumps, too.” Coach Litton said these words about his Bulldogs last summer in dicating his vision of a suc cessful year. Lenoir-Rhyne came to the Webb loaded with the best team they have had in many seasons. The Bears have been ranked high in pre-season polls. On many teams L-R could run wild, but not against the Bull dogs. L-R jumped to a 27-0 lead but the Bulldog defense rose and held them scoreless the entire second half. Quarterback Ray Hannon guided the Bulldogs to a TD before the first half ended. The brilliant passer found Meredith Scruggs in the end zone with one minute and 25 seconds remaining. Bemie Saunders then booted the first of his two extra points for a 27-7 halftime score. Ray Hannon’s favorite recei ver Meredith Scruggs caught seven passes for 117 yards and one touchdown. Hannon looked great on scrambling runs and passes in the second half. The Bulldog defense also rose up in the second half. Barry Good pasture intercepted a pass in the end zone to thwart one drive and John Wright recovered an L-R fumble on the Gardner- Webb 35, midway in the third quarter. From the 35 the Bulldogs marched 65 yards with Hannon to Scruggs and Hannon to Reid passes. David Gibbons then scored from the three yard line. The Bulldogs led in passing yardage 212 to 188, but the Bear’s ground game made the difference with 265 yards to 101 for G-W. Among players deservir^ special praise is Hardin Davis who played a great game after being in the hospital for an operation. The defense was spearheaded by Coleman Hunt, Tom McLaughlin, Ray Miller, Tommy Way, Larry Seachrist, Barry Goodpasture and Dan Seme. Offensive standouts were quarterback, Ray Hannon; half back, David Gibbons; and ends, Meredith Scruggs andKenReid. Up front the Bulldogs were bolstered by the play of Ryan Hendly, Jim Seacord, John Wright, and Jim Washburn. New cheerleaders (back row) Carolyn Vincent, Ann Cline, Kay Abrams, Sam Thomas, Gayle Alexander, Marsha Abernathy, Melody Bannix, (front row,) Debbie Roberts, chief and Amy Freeman. Pep Club Backs Dogs By Donna Turner “W e must be truthful with ourselves; are we really be hind our Bulldogs? The majority of Gardner- Webb students are behind our teams; we have the potential; our enthusiasm is growing! The support students gave our team at the Lenoir-Rhyne game was fantastic! The hope of the Pep Club is that this spirit will continue to grow! These comments by Carolyn Powers, president of the Pep Club were made in a recent interviewing with THE PILOT. The Pep Club is open to all Gardner-Webb students. Its purpose is to build enthusiasm before athletic events and to support the team at these e- vents. In past years, there were few students involved in Pep Club activities. As the college is growing and moving into four year status, the Pep Club is expected to grow. Competition between dorms and organizations for the Pre sident’s Cup which is a pro ject of the Physical Education Majors Club is expected to boost Pep Club activities. In further comment Carolyn said, “Support is essential for a winning team. The support given to our team by the stu dents can be tremendous. Let us continue to work together as a student body and prove to Bulldogs that they have Litton Brings Know How To GW Position By Tiii'oy Knight “We’re being realistic about the season. We will concede 0 games to any of our oppo- e go- I feel 0 outstanding ball as our fellows goafterthe- ir opponents.” These encourag ing words came from our new head football coach George Lit- Coach Litton had breat succ ess with Lees McRae Jonior College. His past three teams lost only two games and were ranked in the top ten. Coach Litton signed 20 frosh players to help out the Bulldogs. The fiery coach graduated from East Tennessee State. Lit ton takes over the Bulldogs with GW Bonfire Kicks Off FB Season these words, “W'e’re going to have a good senior college foot ball program, I won’t predict over record but I feel like we’ll be well-represented.” Litton, who knows what it takes to be a winner says his club won’t roll over and play dead. Right in the middle of things is where Litton wants to oe. Litton praises his staff of Cole Proctor, a master’s gra duate of Morehead State Uni versity, defensive coach; Ken Sanford, a G-W graduate, off ensive coach; and Ken Daves, the defensive coach. Coach Lit ton also said Eddie Holbrook, G-W athletic director, will mean a lot to the team. “Ed die’s top-notch,” says Litton. “He goes all-out and doesn’t take a back seat to anyone. . From the students of Gar dner-Webb to Coach Litton, “Good ’uck and we’re behind our support! Byers Gone But No Gap Tony Byers and Tom McMil lan are both freshman in coll ege this year. What do these two men have in common? They are two of the nation’s most sought after basketball players. Both players also signed a let ter of intent to one college and just before classes began de- vided on different schools. Tom McMillan first chose UNC-CH but he later jumped to Maryland. Tony Byers chose Gardner-Webb but now is going to a junior college i n Indiana. Its true that Coach Holbrook hated to lose this bright young freshman, but the loss left no great gap in our team.
