PAGE 4 THE PILOT, GARDNER-WEBE COLLEGE, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1970 Bulldog Sports Bulldogs Seeking Revenge On Lions Homecoming is the highest peak of any college football season. A parade, a concert, open house, and old friends will create a unique spirit on campus. Of course the traditional Homecoming game brings the most enthusiam. This year the Bulldogs host the Lions of Mars Hill College in the Homecoming tilt. The game will start at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, October 31, in Spangler Stadium. The Dogs have a score to settle since Mars Hill won last year’s game. Mars Hill has a fine team this year and will offer the Bulldogs a tough contest. Mars Hill has scored wins over Glenville State, Newberry and Georgetown College. The Lions rolled over Georgetown 30-7. The Bulldog’s main concern will be in stopping the passing of Lion quarterback Marvin Parrott. The G-W offense will be calling on its outstanding perform ers, David Gibbons, Lanny Mabry, Meredith Scruggs, Jim Seacord, Ray Hannon, and Ken Reid to capture a victory for the Dogs. The defense will rely on Lee Thompson, Larry Sea- christ, Hardin Davis, Tommy Way, Coleman Hunt, and Tommy Kirk to stop the Lions. Each of these players has been cited for outstanding performances. Reid-Kirk Strong Against Samford The G-W Bulldogs lost a scoring duel with Samford Uni versity in Birmingham, Ala. 56-28. The more experienced Samford team rolled to 351 yards rushing allowing G-W only 85 yards on the ground. The fact that one-half of the G-W squad Is freshmen and a home field gave Samford the advantage. Ken Reid played exceptionally well on offense and Tommy Kirk had a good night in the defensive secondary. Reid caught four passes, two each from quarterbacks Ray Hannon and Sid Bryson. Two of Reid’s receptions were for touchdowns. Meredith Scruggs brought in three passes for fifty yards. Lanny Mabry also scored one touchdown. Tommy Kirk made two unassisted tackles and had four assists for the Bulldog defense. Kirk has played consistently good football for the Dogs all season. Johnny Phillips, a new additin to the team, has been doing the punting for the Bulldogs. Phillips has good range and has helped in tight situations. Johnny has averaged 38.4 yards in 16 piints against oposing teams. m IJi Gardner-Webb’s 1970-71 golf team consists of (left to right bottom row) Coach Garland Allen, Benjy Adams, Greg Gault, Mike Stewart, Chris Shope, Tim Moss and (left to right top row) Gary Dobbins, Chip Sims, Jack Moore, Terry Florence, and Johnny Kyle, team members not pictured are Bobby Hines, Mark Crawford, and Johnny Henderson.
