PAGi 4 GARDNER-WEBB COLLEGE, THE PILOT, MARCH 2, 1971 Bulldog Adams Named Top Athlete In N.C. A North Carolina News paper, The Greensboro Daily News, recently selected G-W’s All-American George Adams as their “Athlete of the Week.” As the paper stated, “It could have been Charlie Davis, Randy Denton, or Den nis Wuycik, ” however, they selected “Big George.” The News based their se lection mainly on how well Ad ams has performed all season and especially during the tough week against Guilford, Allen University and UNC-A. George, a junior, plays high post and is averaging nearly 29 points per game and over Dogs Break Team Record The Gardner-Webb Basket ball team, ranked number 7 in the nation, proved their might against Piedmont College. G-W established a new high game total of 153 since becoming a senior college handling Pied mont a 153-109 rout. “Big George” Adams was again high man with 40 points. Adams sizzled for 31 in the second half. A1 Graves hit his career high of 35 to also share in the Bulldog offensive glory. Henry Boyd, 6-11 fresh man, had 22 and Richard Thomas, with 20, padded the G-V' score. “V/e blew it open with the best 10 minutes we’ve played this season,” said head coach Eddie Holbrook. “Everyone shot well for us, especially in the second half. We hit 63 per cent , which is one of our better nights.” “Adams and Graves was hitting well. Boyd did a fine job on the boards for us. Thon.as was tough on de fense and also had one of his best nights on offense, ” Hol brook concluded. Tony Spagnola came in and contributed 16 markers for the Bulldogs. Spag has been an Important factor for the Bull dogs all year. Jack McGill got 8 points in engineering the Jack Directs Dog^s Attack Every collegiate coach likes to have a few seniors on his squad to be team-leaders. Coach Eddie Holbrook, has only one senior to help guide his Bulldogs. Working as the team quarter back from his point position Jack McGUl has earned the respect of his teammates. Jack is 5’ 11” and has a good knowledge of the game to compliment his quickness. Last year Jack averaged 6.1 points per game and is about consistent with that average this year. His points usually come when the team needs them Jack can break up a tough zone defense with his outside shooting ability. He has worked hard at improving his defen sive play which has payed off in numerous steals. Being a team leader is the real test which McGill has pass ed with flying colors. At half- time of the G-W , UNC-A Guilford, Allen, UNC-A Fall To Bulldog Attack 15 rebounds. As the paper went on, Alams background is more or less typical of the play ers who sharp, young Coach Eddie Holbrook has recruited in seven years at the Wetb. Holbrook’s success is witnes sed by his 161-38 record.” In addition the News describ ed Adams as a player who is improving with each game. Tennis Team Shaping Up The Gardner-Webb College Tennis Team will begin their 1971 season with a home court match against High Point on March 16. This year’s team will be leaning on four seniors, Billy Walters, Barry Maney, Larry Smith, and Tommy Bell, who are not fighting for the top position of the squad. Bell was the No. 1 man at the end of fall practice. James Taylor, and English teacher at Gardner-Webb, is in his seventh year as coach and is expected to have one of his best seasons this year. The tennis ball will be bounc ing more than every this sea son due to a 20- match sche dule. One of the highlights of the year will be a big week end in Tennessee. The team will be playing Tusculum and a doubleheader with Emory Henry. “"fe are hoping to improve our 4-8 record of last season. Our toi;gh opponents this year will be Emory-Henry and Wof ford, who always has an ex cellent team,” sal d Coach Taylor. Other members of the team will play a vital role in the success of tennis this year are Richard Granger, Debbie M'llson, Janey Vaughn, Charles Nixon, and Richard Jessen. The girls on the team will play if the teams which Gardner- Webb plays will allow it. Chales Nixon has been ill, but is hopefully to join the squad soon along with Richard Jessen who is now playing basketball. Richard Granger will be a great asset to the team this season. i Gardner-Webb had a tough week. The third week in Feb ruary. The Bulldogs took on Guilford in the Charlotte Coli seum on Wednesday, Allen Uni versity Thursday and UNC- Asheville on Saturday. Guilford is ranked among the top twenty teams and is much improved since the start of the season. They have only lost four games and finished fourth in the NAIA last year. In the Coliseum, G-W fans and many other spectators saw one of the best games in G-W history. The entire coliseum exploded from a hush of si lence when Dennis DeSanctis hit a 17 footer at the buzzer for a 104-103 Bulldog victory. The G-W- game far out-classed the Carolina Cougar game which followed. Many Cougar spectators left after the G-W game claim - ing they had already got their money’s wortn. To expiam tne game would be impossible. If you weren’t there you just missed it. It was just one of those fantastic games. Henry Boyd came through with a performance which left the pro scouts drooling. Boyd 35 points and many important rebounds. Tony Spagnola had perhaps his best game of the year, tapping in shots and really hitting the boards. George Adams was contain ed by the tough Guilford de fense. Ke was limited to only 14 points, however, he hit a couple of important free- throws late in the game to pull the Dogs from the jaws of defeat. The people who were there will never forget that game. People are still talking about its around campus. It was a great victory for Gard- McGill A Team Leader For Dogs Jack McGill (14) senior captain of the Bulldogs, directs the attack from the top of the key. game Dr. E. Eugene Poston, praised Jack for his Invaluable play-making and ball-handling. His team mates also feel that Jack is a competent leader. Jacks’s main job is to get the ball down court and pass off to one of the big men. With talent like Adams, Body, Graves and Spagnola waiting under the basket it would be foolish not to go for the better percentage Passing, dribbing, and finding the open man fs “cool Jack’s” specialty. The Dogs started out sluggishly at the beginning due to the .effects of the strenuous Guilford game. After the half, however, G-W got it together and passed the century mark again for a 103-82 victory. Allen hampered the Bull dogs with a full-court press but All-American George Ad ams came alive in the second half and finished with 37 points. The rest of the Bull dogs scoring was fairly ba- Tony Spagnola was the 2nd leading scorer with 15 points. “Spag” collected his share of rebounds also. Richard Thomas scored 13, Graves and Boyd got 10, and Jack McGill added 9. G-W hosted UNC-A the following Saturday night to a packed house. Bost Gym was over flowing with highly part- ism G-W fans. UNC-A hand ed the Bulldogs their first of two loses and the 3,200 fans present saw the Eddie Holbrook cages get their revenge. After the first five minutes the game was never close again. The Dogs went on to enjoy a 120-97 victory, “Big George” swung into • beautiful form getting 47 points, Adams had 26 points in the first half and added 21 after inter mission. The victory over shadowed an earlier 74-65 UNC-A victory. Adams who also grabbed 29 rebounds was helped out by 6’ 11”, Henry Boyd. Boyd scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds. Other G-W play ers in double figures were Tony Spagnola with 13, Richard Thomas with 10, and Jack Mc Gill with 11. It was the first time this season tliat an opponent scored over 100 p'.iints on the tough Asheville defense. G-W went into the dressing room at half- time with a 57-48 advantage. When they came back it was downhill the rest of the way.
