The South Carolina eleven will come to Boiling Springs with revenge in mind since the Bulldogs scored a 3-0 win last year in Newberry. It was the first senior college win for the Bulldogs. Coach George Litton will be in his second year as head Bulldog at Gardner-Webb. Even though his first year’s work showed only two wins in ten games things look much brighter for the 1971 season. Litton does have problems— mainly a shortage of offensive linesmen. Over-all depth injuries hurt the Bulldog cause drastically last year and should there be as many this year, it could be another long season for Bulldog followers. Coach Litton is blessed with one of the finest signal callers in the two Carolinas. Junior, Ray Hannon ranked in the top 20 last year in NAIA status. He closed out the season with a game total offensive average of more than GARDNER-WEBB COLLEGE FOOTBALL ROSTER No. Name 10 Doc Davis 11 Ray Hannon 12 Bernie Sanders 13 Chuck Burnham 14 Mike Stephens 15 Johnny Phillips 16 Steve Carswell 17 John Dolan 19 Mike Evans 20 Alton White 21 Mike Poole 22 Jody Anthony 24 Jim Lynn 25 Dickie Sherrill 26 Scott Hunt 27 Russ Horn 28 John Mallory 30 George Gilliam 31 Richard Wofford 32 Tommy Kirk 33 Terry Wilder 34 Tony Mauldin 35 Tommy Way 36 Dennis Dukes 40 Eric Caldwell 41 Bill Howell 42 Scott Thompson 43 Darryl Corley 44 Frank McGinnis 46 Jeff Hester 50 Eddie Hunt 51 Joe Smith 52 Dick Williams 54 Harold Davis 55 Alan Milam 56 Mike Missbach 57 Mark Cranford 58 Gary Blackwell 59 Steve Burch 60 Dickie Brown 61 Bill Stubbs 62 Malcolm Singleton 63 Heath Livingston 64 Tom Frye 65 Tim Livingston 66 Buzz Sims 67 Vance Forchetti 68 Danny Hudson 69 Mike Godfrey 70 Lee Thompson 71 Hardin Davis 72 Terry Flincham 73 George Foster 74 John Wright 75 Joaquin Arce 76 Coleman Hunt 77 Steve Phillips 78 Mike Cherry 79 Greg Taylor 80 Woody Fish 82 Arnold Smith 83 Meridith Scruggs 85 Rick Chapman 86 Gene Cooley 87 Billy Warnock 88 Ken Reid 89 Bob Williams Wt. The center will be Gary Black- well. The defense should be tough, but the defensive backfield will have to make improvements. Two fine defensive backs, senior Tom my Way and Steve Carswell will be seeing plenty of action. Hardin Davis, Coleman Hunt and Mike Godfrey will try to hold the front line for the Bulldogs. May is a graduate of East Ten nessee State University where he earned both his bachelor’s and his master’s degrees. He has also done additional graduate work at the University of Tennessee. Litton and May played college .botball together while both at tended East Tennessee. They have been close friends for a number of years. In commenting on the addition of May to the football staff Coach Litton said: “We are very pleased to have Richard join us at Gardner-Webb. His addition to the staff will give us three out standing assistant coaches. He possesses the same characteristics as Coaches Ken Sanford and Cole Proctor. I feel that these three men make up as fine a staff as a head coach could build in any small college today.” Coach May and his wife, Grace, have two daughters, Becky, and Beth. iTi GO DOGS BEAT INDIANS 1971 G-W Football Sept. 11 Lenoir-Rhyne Hickory 8:C Sept. 18 Newberry (Band Night) Home 7:3 Sept. 25 Open Oct. 2 Elon Burlington 7:3 Oct. 9 Guilford Guilford 7:3 Oct. 16 Samford (Civic Club Night) Home 1-.'. Last year Bemie Sanders booted a 31 yard field goal in the second quarter of the Newberry game and the G. W. defense made it stick for a 3-0 win. This was Gardnei^Webb’s first win over a senior college. In the Newberry game this Saturday, will Gardner-Webb be able to show their strength again? Give the Bulldogs the support they deserve and come out Saturday. In the picture above, the center is Gary Black- well, with Bernie Sanders kicking and Tommy Way holding.
