By CARROL GARRETT
School is back in full swing and that means football. The 1972
edition of the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs are hitting the pads hard to
prepare for the season ^opener at Newberry on September 16. Coach
George Litton’s men have six at home and five away. Support the
’Dogs this year at home and on the road.
An outstanding South American tennis prospect has signed a grant-
in-aid to attend Gardner-Webb this year.
Billy Fajordo, a 20-year-old resident of Bogota, Colombia, has won
nujnerous titles during a high school career in Bogola.
Young Fajardo is a member of the Club Los Lagartos, a Bogota
tennis club. He has participated in the club’s tournaments since 1968
and is present reigning singles and doubles champion of the club.
Vincent Nedimyer has been named offensive line coach and chief
scout for the Bulldogs this season.
Nedimyer was a starter three years at Wake Forest University, and
following graduation remained at Wake Forest as graduate assistant
and last year was freshman defensive line coach and handled the scout
ing duties for the Deacons.
Coach Nedimyer fills a vacancy caused by the leaving of Coach
Cole Proctor who accepted a position as head football coach at Morris
town, New Jersey.
Mr. James Taylor, tennis coach at Gardner-Webb, is on leave this
year doing graduate work. He is a English professor at GW. Mr. P. A.
Cline, professor in Biblical and Ancient Languages, will be replacing
Taylor a s tennis coach. We welcome Mr. Cline to the sports scene.
Dr. Robert R. Blackburn, chairman of the division of physical
education, has had an article published on the movement and develop
ment of a playground. It was published in the summer issue of the
North Carolina Journal, a publication of the North Carolina Associa
tion of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
The article tells how Dr. Blackburn with a group of Gardner-Webb
physical education majors along with the teachers and administration of
the local elementary school teamed with the tovl'n of Boiling Springs
to transform a vacant area near the school for a modem playground.
Dr. Blackburn said that three positive things came out of the pro
gram. The children got a first class playground, linesi of cooperation
were established between three groups and physical education majors
at GW were involved in actual doing instead of all theory.
Great school spirit was demonstrated by the student body of Uni
versity of Wisconsin at Eau Claire at the National Basketball Tourna
ment in Kansas City last spring. Let us, the student body of Gardner-
Webb support our teams and cheerleaders this year.

Cheerleaders
Attend Clinic
The National Spirit and Sports
manship Workshop for cheerlead
ers was held August 20-24 at East
Tennessee State University. Ten
cheerleaders from Gardner-Webb
attended the clinic in Johnson
City, Tennessee.
R e p r e s enting Gardner-Webb
were co-captains Debbie Burns,
and Jim Swayney, Linda Albright,
Susie Bahakel, Myra Botts, Patti
Epley, Jay Johnson, Joe Speight,
Shirley Wolfe, and Carolyn Vin-
The purpose of the clinic was
to properly train and prepare
cheerleaders for the school spirit
program on a college campus.
Every phase of cheerleading was
taught — tumbling, stunts, cheer-
leading techniques, psychology,
and routines.
Mrs. Eddie Holbrook, advisor
feels this will become an annual
event due to the tremendous re
sponse and knowledge brought
back by the cheerleaders. “The
attitude of the cheerleaders was
really changed in a very positive
way and they are fired up to go.”
One student who had cheered in
high school and is on the GW
squad for her second year replied
that “for the first time I really
felt like a cheerleader and realiz
ed the meaning of what it was to
be on the squad.”
Each day they were judged on ,
their performance. The first day
they received Honorable Mention.
The second day they jumped to
Excellent and held this rating for
two days. Then on the fourth day
they received a Superior rating
which is the highest ribbon and
means that they performed with-
One instructor commented that
our squad was the most improved
and had the material for an out
standing cheerleading teani. Mrs.
Holbrook projected that “they
have good material and are train
ed for effective cheerleading but
will be only as good as the fans
will allow.”
Also attending the clinic were
cheerleaders from the University
of Florida, University of Southern
Mississippi, East Tennessee State,
East Texas University, Lenoir
Rhyne, Elon, Samford University,
and Mars Hill. The University of
Florida and the University of
South Carolina were voted the
most Outstanding squads and will
be cheering at the Senior Bowl.
Bulldogs Prepare
For Opening Tilt
Injuries have hit the football
camp as the Gardner-Webb Bull
dogs are making preparation for
game one of a brand new season.
. Most of the injuries were bruis
es and sprains, which the coach
ing staff hopes will be cleared
before the September 16th opener
with Newberry College in New
berry, S. C.
Offensively the Bulldogs will
again depend on their passing
game to keep them going. Senior
Quarterback, Ray Hannon, is back
and shooting for his third straight
thousand yard year through the
air. Hannon passed for 1441. yards
his sophomore year and added
1203 last season.
A welcome returnee will be
Ken Reid, who was out for the
season last year with a leg injury.
Reid caught 37 passes for 732
yards and eight touchdowns in
1970.
The Bulldog running backs
should be paced by sophomore
Dennis Dukes. Dukts gained 607
yards in seven games along with
a 5.7 yards per carry..
On the defensive side of the
football. Senior Co-captain Woody
Fish will be counted on heavily
again this season. George Foster,
a 225 pound defensive end, along
with Arnold Smith. Coleman
Hunt, Mike Godfrey, Danny Hud
son, and Hal Davis should prove
to be the difference in the middle
of the defensive line.
The line backing corps will be
headed by Fish, Alan Milan, and
Richard Grissom. Steve Carswell
and Rick Wofford will be the de
fensive backs.
Basketball
Season Ahead
Basketball practice began for
the Bulldogs the first of Septem
ber. The 1972-73 basketball sched
ule will include 18 games, plus
three tournaments and a three
game trip to the Hawaiian Is
lands, giving the NAIA power a
total of 27 games.
The Bulldogs, who closed out
last season with a fourth place
finish in the NAIA nationals,
with a record of 25 wins and 5
losses, will be in a rebuilding
process due to the loss of four
starters from the 1971-72 squad.
The trip to Hawaii beginning
an. 28 will be one of the high-
' lights of the season for the Bull
dogs. Accompanying the Bulldogs
to Hawaii will be more than 200
members of the Bulldog Booster
Club.
