The old songs, friends, and interests are never the same again. I think we can apply this to all our own life experiences. The stanzas are as such; “I went to a garden party and the mist were my old friends, A chance to share old memories, play our songs again.” “People come from miles around, every one was there, Yoka brought a waleras, there was magic in the air, over in the corner, much to my surprise, Mr. Hughes hidden Dilan’s shoes, wear’n his disguise. “Play them all the old songs, thought that’s why they came, no one heard the music, didn’t look the same. I said hello to Mary Lou, she belongs to me, then I sang a song about a honky tonk, “So I opened up the closet door and out stepped Johnny-Be- Good, play’n guitar like a ring and bell, look’n like he should. Got to play at garden parties, I wish you a lot of luck, but me mories all if sang, I rather drive a truck. Chorus: “But it’s all right now, I learned my lesson well, you see you can’t please everyone so you got to please yourself.” Rick Nelson an dhis Band were inspired to write “Garden Party” during a performance at a rock- roll revival in Madison Square Garden. The festival was attended by both older adults and young people, and when the group would play the old songs the older people would respond and the young boo’ed him. When he played his new sounds the youth responded favorably. The concert was a total failure, but this inci dent inspired the writing of “Garden Party” and the realiza tion that you can’t please every one, so you have got to please yourself. Rick Nelson use to sing a rock ’n roll type music about ten years ago when he was known as Ricky Nelson. Since then a whole new type of music to fit the times has caused him a change of style. This song is folk-rock being folk in words and rock in sound. How ever he is versatile and can sing all types of music effectively. I think this song will exceed high on the charts, because people can identify with this song. Rick Nelson is a original in his own way. I have seen him perform in at Music Mountain in California. He is a very good performer and anyone can enjoy and feel like a part of the music during his show. To see him in action can be a re warding experience for each in dividual.
