An Interesting Note
A student is seen walking calm
ly toward the O. Max Gardner
building when suddenly his sereni
ty is shattered by the anything
but triumphant blast of trumpets
as the brass students prepare for
class. As he cautiously progresses,
he hears the sound of a rusty alto
vocalizing a step under pitch, an
organ student stumbling through
Bach’s Prelude in F, and some
where underneath' all this un-
harmonious racket is faintly heard
strains from Beethoven’s 5th.
After such a nerve shattering ex
perience, it is noticed that our
student is now walking with a
slight tremble in his right leg and
his head keeps jerking from side
to side in a definite, rhythmic pat
tern. He is last seen pleading with
an oncoming student and we can
hear him say, “Do yourself a
favor, DON’T GO NEAR THAT
BUILDING."
What is going on inside the
OMG is really no secret. If one
has smelled paint lately, it is be
cause the lounge, hallways, and
outside of the OMG have just
recently received a new coat of
paint. The lounge now has new
draperies also. The draperies were
made by Mrs. J. G. Black and
the material for them was donated
by Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Thomp
son of Esther Mill.
If you happen to be passing by
the building between 6:30 and
7:45 on Thursday evenings, you
will probably hear strains from
Bach’s Magnificat or Randall
Thompson’s The Peaceable King
dom. The ensemble and chorus
has combined to work on these
two compositions under the di
rection of Dr. Jerry Hill. On No
vember 6tK and 7th, Dr. Joseph
Flummerfelt, director of Choral
Activities at Westminister Choir
College, will be at Gardner-Webb
to conduct the performance. This
will be the musical highlight of
the semester for the Music De
partment. The accompanists for
the performance will be Mrs. Jerry
Hill on the organ, Jo Ann Fowler,
and Catherine Bailey - on the
piano. Soloists will be Diane Al
len, Carmen Christopher, Melanie
Johnston, Pam McCall, Brooks
Walker, Rocky Taylor, and Lee
A new nine foot Baldwin piano
has been purchased along with
three new studio pianos for the
practice rooms. In November^
Herman Godes will perform the
dedicatory recital on the Baldwin
Throughout the year there will
bo various recitals and special
programs which will be open for
the student body. The Music De
partment has nearly doubled this
year and each major and faculty
member is excited by the possi
bilities and potential to be dis
covered.
Although it may sound like it,
the OMG is not a torture cham
ber but a building which lends
its thin walls and fragile windows
to the brave sounds of music
majors.
The question of what college
I will attend is a question that
perplexes many high school sen
iors. Karen Smith of Brookville,
Connecticut decided that the best
way to decide which was .the best
college for her was to personally
visit as many schools as possible.
After much discussion Karen
was able to persuade her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, to
accompany her on a trip south-
News Flash
How would you feel if you
were a potential fire all ready to
burst into glowing red - orange
flames and you heard news like
this: “This, year there will be fire
marshals appointed in each of the
girls dorms at Gardner-Webb Col
lege”? Ugh! You can’t imagine
how depressing my day was after
hearing this news. Why, I couldn’t
even digest my favorite meal after
this which is composed of rags
that have been soaked in filth
and d'rt for months smothered in
o'l rings.' UMMM! Usually just
the thought of this sets me on
fire but not today. How could
anybody stoop so low!
The despicable culprits who ac
cepted this position are: Samala
High for Stroup, Pat Bishop for
Decker, Beverly Yount for HAPY,
and Melissa McClure for Nanney.
The yare responsible for seeing
that the girls know what to do in
case I ever get a chance to make
my debut which is doubtful now.
(How would you like to tangle
with a lady “Smoky the Bear”?)
They are also in charge of fire
drills wh'ch must be held at least
once during the semester. It’s no
fun if everybody knows what to
do and there is no confusion or
panicking. This whole business
just burns me up!
Just think how you would feel
if your whofe life’s ambition just
went up in flames because some
body squelched your' opportunity.
Ever since I was just a little
spark I’ve wanted to really get in
on the action and set this world
afire. And does where Fate lead
me but to some college called
Gardner-Webb where they take
precautions against me. Don’t
even give me a chance. This
world is UNFAIR!

ward in quest of a “special” col
lege. A friend of Karen’s, Rox
anne DeVere, also of Brookville,
accompanied Karen and her fam
ily on the trip. Roxanne was con
vinced it would be a pleasurable
trip and felt that she too might
find the right college.
By the middle of the week Ka
ren and her entourage had toured
several campuses throughout
North and South Carolina, in
cluding small colleges and several
state universities. However, Karen
had still not found that special
school she was looking for.
While traveling from Charlotte
on Highway 74. Mr. Smith stop
ped at a service station in Shelby
for gas. The service station at
tendant noticed the Smith’s license
tag and asked if they were on
vacation. Karen told the attendant.
she was looking for a college that
she would like to attend.
The service station attendant
could not resist the chance to in
form the Smith’s that “a really
good college was only about five
miles away.” Karen asked the at
tendant what school he was re-
ferr-’ng to. His reply was, “Gard-
- ner-Webb”.
After receiving directions to
Boiling Springs and Gardner-
Webb, Karen had not been on
campus but a few mniltes before
she decided this was the school
of her choice. Karen later stated,
“I was really impressed with the
campus layout and the friendli
ness of the students and faculty
was unbelievable. The whole at
mosphere of the campus really
Karen’s friend, Roxanne, was
also impressed. They couldn’t be
lieve that a college president in
vited them into Jiis office for a
chat without an appointment. Dr.
Eugene Poston did exactly that.
Karen said, “I came south look
ing for a college with a Christian
atmosphere and at last I’ve found
Karen and Roxanne left for
home with plans to return to
Gardner-Webb after high school
graduation. Karen was so excited
that she sold Kathy Martel of
nearby Bethel, Connecticut on
Gardner-Webb. Two weeks before
school started Karen’s father con
tacted Dr. Poston to see if Carl
Bradshaw of Danbury, Connecti
cut could still be accepted. Dr.
Poston contacted the admissions
office and the proper forms were
mailed to the Bradshaw family and
completed in time for him to at
tend college this fall.
Because of an unknown service
station attendant, four Connecticut
youths are happy to be in the
South and particularly at Gardner-
Webb College.
$Bob Grant $
The student government treas
urer this year is Bob Grant, a
junior who is majoring in religi
ous education. He is from Green
ville, South Carolina and is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Fred
Grant.'He attended Parker High
School and was active there, be
ing president of the student body,
president of the Inter-High Coun
cil, of Greenville Co.. and cap
tain of the high school band. He
also attended South Carolina Boys
State.
Bob entered Gardner-Webb in
the fall of 1970. Here he has
been involved in the Rotaract
Club, Ministerial Alliance, and
Baptist Student Union. His hobby
is tennis and he says that he en
joys making people happy. He has
had some experience in working
with people due to his vvork in
the First Baptist Church of High
Springs, Florida during the sum
mer months.
When asked what his goals in
SGA were he replied that he
wanted to please the student body
in the choice of entertainment for
this school year. He is striving to
satisfy people’s tastes in style and
music. This year for the first time
the students will have a coffee
house. He asks that the students
support this endeavor in any way
they can to make it a place of
interest and relaxation. His one
desire in SGA is to help create
an atmosphere of unity between
the faculty and student body at
Gardner-Webb College.
