Secretary... Sylvia Johns During this past year the role of the Student Government Asso ciation here on our campus has taken on new significance. The powers and privileges of our student body have been exercised due largely to the leadership of our present SGA officers and to informed dedicated students willing to work hard in order to secure a representative govern ment tht responds to the needs of the students. I feel that the role of the Secre tary in our Student Government is necessary for this type of repre sentative government to operate efficiently. Communication and organization are special necessities for any kind of efficient govern ment. The Secretary’s job is to work with other members of the student body in order to atta •, this efficiency in these two important Having served as a senator this year I realize the importance of this job in regard to the total efficiency of every area of our SGA. The chance to serve in this capacity would give me the privilege of helping to work toward a more in formed government that works for the best welfare of students. Sylvia Johns Rising Junior I seek the office of President of the Student Government Asso ciation. I am also interested in making the Association a powerful arm in the college system of gover- ment. It must be respected, es pecially by those who have tried to control it. We must work for a su preme unity, a togetherness that is composed of everybody involved in this community. This togetherness must have one theme, Excellence in Education. The SGA next year should seek to explore the possibilities of renovating some out-dated policies. With a new campus life style maybe the old will be lost in the flood of a new Gardner-Webb, one that will appeal to high school seniors everywhere. I personally have much to learn, and I am sure my wrist will be slapped more than once if I am elected. But what I hope I can do for Gardner-Webb will be done with a clear conscience. That in itself, would be a step in a new and right direction; for in the past clear con- Treasurer... Bob Decker, Jr. The office of treasurer is a unique resonsibility and one that must be handled carefully in that it is involved with large sums of money belonging to a larger group of peo ple. My experience in the Senate for the last two years has shown me that one of the main concerns is how this money is used. Also, the students who must pay these ever increasing amounts of money, are deeply interested in why they must pay this money and in seeing the benefits from it. If elected, I will to the best of my ability make sure these funds are used wisely for the best interest of the student body. I woul appreciate your help and support. Robert Cribb Julia Fowler Rising J unior Rising Senior have heard various things about our Student Government. People have said it is a figure head group of people, a Mickey-Mouse organi zation, with just a name, that con ducts a bunch of bull in CID every two weeks or so. I hear this from people who I don’t think imderstand. Gardner-Webb has come a long tivities. I have had a great amount ^ ^ ^ave a long rocky : i-o TT n j way to go. SGA is for real! SGA can be just as strong from your support or weak from yourapathy. Apathy is a our campus as well as across the nation. But that’s no reason to pass it by. I can only promise that one per son will not be apathetic. That is myself. I will try. I can’t promise you anything, not even that I wiU do a good job, bad job or fair job. But I can promise you that I will do a job. I’ll try to make life at Gard- ner-Webb better. And you will have to ask yourself deep down, “Do I really care about anything that goes on about this campus” If so, I urge you to get involved. You’ll be surprised how much we can get The Meaningful Vote Student Government Association, SGA, Student Union ‘ Board, Executive Council, Chief Justice. . . these are the positions ... Senate, SGA Constitution, student rights, stu dent activities... and these are the results. An effective student government is the pith of campus activities at Gardner-Webb. What would campus life be like without an effective SGA with responsible and diligent leaders? It is apparent that the only route to student power and student vote is through a working and living STUDENT government. As the candidates speak on their views, challenge them and get to know them. The first responsibility before the vote is to know what the candidate stands for and what he will work for. Then, the right to vote becomes an expression of your support and concern. Even if a candidate is unchal lenged, he cannot win without 25 per cent of the votes cast. Finally, after the election, support and a “thank you” from fellow students are what keeps a leader in power. The executive council members have a full-time, seven-day-week job and our job is to support them fuU-time. S.A.H. Wirt,
