Tennis Season The Gardner-Webb tennis opened with a preseason practice match victory by defeating Lime- The official season did not start until March 15 when the G-W netters were defeated by UNC- Charlotte 6-2 with the ninth match rained out. The two Gardner-Webb victories are attributed to the doubles teams of Billy Fijardo and Charles Nixon, and Steve Sipes and Randy Alexander. P. A. Cline, associate professor of ancient languages and literature and coach of the tennis team, stated that the loss was probably due to opening match jitters. Two matches in a row have been rained out and the netters have not had the chance to re-establish them selves. The netters will host Elon College and Carson-Newman Col lege in a Tri Match Tournament on April 14. Gardner-Webb has got the po tential for a winning tennis season. One player stated “weather permit- ing, the 1973 tennis team will show Gardner-Webb a very exciting season.” The 1973 team is the first team in the history of the school to contain scholarship players on the roster. This season four netters received a grant-in-aid. Winners In The Making Bulldog football Coach George Litton reported that his staff and players are “makin’ ready” for the '73 football season. “We’ve had a good spring and we’re looking forward to next fall.” Coach Litton further ex plained that it was good because the spirit and the enthusiasm is the best that it has been since Gardner- Webb became a senior college. “We have more men that are dedicated and wilUing to pay the price to Football, like any other sport is a year-round undertaking that re quires nine months of preparation and three months of competition. Coach Litton commented that the team “started at the beginning of spring semester, on January 8, with five weeks of conditioning in four areas. Each man is on a pro gram to increase his agility and flexibility. The team has a program involv ing running and weight lifting which builds strength and stamina. From February 12 to March 3 the team dressed out in full gear in ses sions to improve individual tech niques and make offensive and de fensive changes. Now that heavy practice is over the men are on a schedule that in cludes a supervised weight program on Monday and Wednnes- day and on Tuesday and Thursday the team dresses in sweat gear to run agility drills. Coach Litton commented thatt “Each player is given a program to follow when he goes home for the summer because if he does not stay in shape during the summer months, everything done in the spring would have been wasted.” Spring Sports Schedule March 30 Golf Away Campbell Baseball Home Eastern Baptist March 31 Tennis Home UNC-Asheville April 2 Baseball Home Allen University Golf Home Lenoir Rhyne, Western Carolina, UNC-Charlotte, Presbyterian April Tennis Away Lenoir Rhyne Track Home Presbyterian April 6 Baseball Home High Point Tennis Away Johnson C.
