SGA
President’s Column
A warm thank you to the Pilot
staff for extending an invitation to
me to write my column. This
column will appear with each issue
and will be representative of the
attitudes and thoughts that I have
gathered from publication to
publication. May I begin by
thanking all of the students at
GWC so far. Each one has
expressed an interest in student
government and also many have
given bits of encouragement.
Writing a newspaper article is not
new to me, but being a student
body president is, and I am fast
learning the system. It is a cruel
one and those not involved directly
will never really know. I have
learned now what former President
Riddle meant when he said that
you will get walked on and pushed
around from the offset to the finish.
Nevertheless, we must always
continue to look to the brighter
side. A new year is starting and
there will be new faces, new leaders,
new ideas, and hopefully new
changes. I’m looking for great
moving events to take place that
will benefit those who have put
their faith in this year’s SGA Hope
this year will prove that student
life is the key to the success of
GWC.
Faculty-Student
Talent Showcase
On August 22, 1973, students
and faculty presented to a curious
audience their many talents. Mr.
Bob Decker Sr., music and band
director, and Doug Jordan, a G-W
senior served as co-masters of
ceremonies. The talent showcase
was held at 8:00 p. m. on the front
terrace of the O. Max Gardner
Building.
There were three selected
winners from the student talent
and one faculty winner. Our judges
this year were Mrs. E. Eugene
Poston, Mrs. Jerry Walker, Mrs. J.
Roy Robinson, Dr. Robert Morgan,
Mr. Rick Walters, Mr. Julian
Fowler and Mr. Jeff McNeill.
The winners were Mike Davis
first place, Ricardo Sarmiento
second place, and Cyrenthia
Averette third place. The faculty
winner was Mr. Jerry Walker. Con
gratulations to these and all those
who participated.
1973-1974 Officers
Elected By Students
The campaigning is over, the
ballots have been counted and the
1973-74 S. G. A. senators and class
officers are ready to take on the
Fdl
Revival
This week Gardner-Webb
students are experiencing a well
established tradition on campus,
Fall Revival. No one can remember
when the first revival was held but
Dr. Robert Lamb stated that this
was the 12th one he has
participated in since coming to
Gardner-Webb.
The main speaker this year is Dr.
J. Herbert GUmore Jr., minister of
the Baptist Church of the
Covenant, Bu-mingham, Ala. Dr.
Gilmore was among the founders of
this church. It sprung out of the
controversy of accepting black
members into the church. Dr.
Gilmore and some of his congrega
tion then founded the Baptist
Church of the Covenant which is
not only interracial, but inter-
cultural, and international as well.
Dr. Gilmore, a native of Knox
ville, Tenn., was educated at
Carson-Newman College and
Peabody College, receiving his B.
A. and M. A. He then received his
Th. D. from Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary in 1959.
His pastorial experience spans
twenty-five years. He has been the
speaker for various denominational
projects. He is in demartd as a
university lecturer and preacher.
Dr. Gilmore is also the author of a
number of books, among his more
famous, “When Love Prevails” and
“They Chose to Live.”
Our guest music leader this year
is Mr. David Peninger, Director of
Church Music at Fernwood Baptist
Church of Spartanburg, S. C. Mr.
Penninger has served as special lec
turer in music at Wofford College,
and also on the staff of the First
Baptist and Morningside Baptist
churches of Spartanburg.
Mr. Peninger is the composer of
some 130 songs and anthems, 80 of
which have been published or ac
cepted for publication. In 1966 he
was elected to the membership in
the American Society of Com
posers, Authors and Publishers.
responsibility of representing their
fellow students.
The S. G. A. elections were held
Wednesday, Sept. 5, and Thursday,
Sept. 6. Much student interest and
support was shown as was
indicated by the big majority of the
student body that went by the polls
to vote.
Each voter was given two
ballots: a ballot for the selection of
four senators-at-large, and a ballot
for his respective class to select
class officers and class senators.
The four senators-at-large
elected to serve in the 1973-74
Senate are Ann Crump, Rick
