Tuesday, September 18,1973 Cheerleaders Page 3, THE PILOT BULLDOG SPORTS By CARROL DAVIS Bulldogs Prepare For 1973 Season “Cautious optimism” is the slogan around the Gardner-Webb campus as eighty Bulldogs prepare the tough 1973 football campaign. The Bulldogs’ spirits are high despite the extremely hot weather in practice. The 1973 edition of the Bulldogs will have a delicate blend of youth and experience. Doc Davis, two-year veteran, will quarterback the team this year. Hugh Giles, 6’ 3” freshman, should also see action as the field general of the ’Dogs. The running game should be a strong point this year with returnees such as George Gilliam and Scott Thompson and freshman Frank Taylor. Taylor has had an excellent fall practice. The receiving corps will again be led by Ken Reid, Jody Anthony, Terry Wilder and Rick Chapman. Senior Ken Reid, a 1972 All-District selection, has had many pro scouts eyeing him. Freshman Mike Hober adds much valuable depth at split end also. The offensive line will be anchored by Greg Taylor, Danny Hudson, Mike Missbach, Bob BoUck and Buzz Sims. Kicking specialist, Mike Stephens, has also had a great fall practice. He kicked a 50-yard field goal in the annual intra-squad scrimmage held on Saturday, August 25. Arnold Smith, Mike Godfrey, Billy Wamock, Martin Newell and Steve Prevatte will anchor the defensive line, while the line backing corps will be headed by Richard Grissom, Marcus Trivette and Wayne Henderson. Safeties Rick Wofford and Mike Starnes and cornerbacks Scott Hunt and William Peppers will head up the defensive backfield. Head Coach George Litton hopes to “put it all together this year with a strong team effort.” Football is definitely on the way up at Gardner- Webb. Let’s really back the ’Dogs this year.
