Letter To The Editor
Kditorial Policy
Many people have been asking about the Letter to the
Editor pohcy. The reason for withholding the name of the
student is to protect the student. Many people think this is
ridiculous, but it is still needed on the college campus. May
be it is only the human race, but there is still no true free
dom of speech.
Several other college newspapers use this system of with
holding names, the same as The Pilot. Remember the policy
is that the Letter to the Editor be signed for the editor, but
you may request that the name be withheld for the news
paper.
The reason that the letter has to be signed is for the editor
to tell if the letter was written by a responsible person. Like
last week three letters were written, but not a one was
signed. So the people who wrote the letters concerning the
cheerleaders. Bulldog Club and women students, if you
would like these letters printed, all you have to do is come
by the office and sign them.
^ Do you wish for The Pilot to continue printing? With I
I the high cost of printing and the trouble it takes to put |
j out the paper, it is not worth it if people do not need i
I the paper. '
I Now it is up to you, the students, to decide if the |
I paper should continue printing. If there is not at least j
( 250 requests to keep the paper going, we will cease op- J
eration. )
I Just cut out this blank or put on a card and just drop j
I it in the campus mail—addressed to the editor. |
I ( ) Please continue The Pilot. |
I ( ) No, cease operation. |
I Remarks j
I Any suggestions for improvements or new ideas are i
I welcomed to improve the paper. This is the student’s .

Mr. Nash To Represent
Golden Gate Seminary
Mr. Stanton H. Nash, as
sistant to the president at
Golden Gate Baptist Theo
logical Seminary since 1965,
was here representing Gol
den Gate on campus Thurs
day, February 20.
Mr. Nash was born in New
Roads, Louisiana on Feb
ruary 6, 1915. He married
the former Joy Baljeat in
1943 and has four children—
April Joy, Stanna Joy, Ma-
rel Joy, and Stanton Harris
II.
He has studied at many
fine universities including
Trinity University, La Salle
Extension University and
Southwestern Baptist Theo
logical Seminary. He com
pleted his development
training at Kennedy Sin
clair.
He has traveled extensive
ly in many countries. These
include England, France,
Belguim, Holland, Germany
and Czechoslovakia.
Mr. Nash was twice presi
dent of the Oklahoma Bap
tist Religious Education As
sociation and president of
the Oklahoma Chapter-
Southwestern Seminary
Alumni Association. He has
been vice president of the
Southwestern Religious Ed
ucation Association and the
Southern Baptist Religious
Education Association. He
also has been chairman for
the Far West District of
the American College Public
Relations Association.
Mr. Nash has a back
ground of great involvement
within the church. He has
Dear Editor:
In the last edition of THE
PILOT an article appeared
that I would like to answer.
While I do not feel it is al
ways wise to answer un
signed letters, I would like
to make just a few simple
statements concerning the
reasoning behind these trips.
These trips are sponsored
to hopefully build a better
Gardner-Webb by increasing
interest and espirit d c’orps
among Bulldog Club mem
bers as well as providing fel
lowship between the college
party, supporters, and for
eign nations. To provide
publicity locally, nationally,
and internationally for the
college; to provide an attrac
tive recruiting tool for ath
letes; and to provide a lot of
people with an educational
trip they may never get to
make are just a few other
reasons for the trips.
May I make a few state
ments that I hope will clear
the air?
1. These trips are self sup
porting financially. All Bull
dog Club members who
make the trips have already
made a financial contribu
tion to the Bulldog Club (se
veral in excess of $500.00).
served as music and educa
tion director of many
churches throughout the
south. He has served as
church administrator also.
Mr. Nash leads an active
public life helping others
and living the Christian life.
He is a member of several or
ganizations. To list a few,
these include the Masonic
Lodge, American Alumni
Council, Baptist Public Re
lations Association, Sou
thern Baptist Convention
Advisory Committee, Foun
dation of Arts, Industry and
Recreation, Fellowship of
Christians in the Arts, and
Media and Entertainment to
name a very few. He has also
served as a conference leader
at both Baptist retreat
centers of Glorieta and
Ridgecrest and is a former
executive secretary-treasu-
rer of the Hawaii Baptist
Convention.
Mr. Nash is listed in In
ternational Who’s Who in
Community Service, Who’s
Who in Religion, Who’s
Who in Education, and
Community Leaders and
Noteworthy Americans.
He is responsible for de
velopment, public relations,
alumni, publications, place
ment, and student recruit
ment at Golden Gate Bap
tist Theological Seminary.
The impressive list of ac
complishments shows what
a concerned and dedicated
man of God Mr. Nash is. It
is hoped that the students
here at Gardner-Webb will
want to meet and talk to Mr.
Nash again.
The Bulldog Club goal for
athletic scholarships this
year is $63,000. All the ex
pense of the trips is over and
above their contribution
committments and none op
erational funds. Saying that
people should contribute the
money they may wish to use
for personal reasons to help
us build a larger financial
aid office or to get our new
special events center under
construction quicker is also
like saying that all of us
should sell our second cars
or that all our students who
have cars should sell them
and contribute that money
so that more of our students
would not have to withdraw
because of financial reasons.
While we realize it would be
nice for people to do this it
would be a pretty difficult
thing to achieve. The figure
of $10,000 was mentioned as
the cost for our team. This is
not accurate, because the
Basketball Federation of
Brazil furnished a good gua
rantee to help offset the ex
pense of the team. What
their guarantee did not cover
was made up for by the Bull
dog Club members paying a
pro rated share per seat.
When people show that
they are wiUing to support
Gardner-Webb financially,
and are still interested in us
ing their additional financial
resources to make these
trips, I think the pluses far
outweigh the minuses.
2. I firmly believe that
these trips, just like those
other departments of the
college make to foreign
countries, are of tremendous
educational value. It is real
ly difficult to describe the
impact that seeing first
hand the Christ of the Re
deemer Statue, Sugar Loaf
Mountain, Westminister Ab
bey, Big Ben, Oxford Uni
versity, the Vatican, the
Coliseum has on you, but I
can assure you that it is
spine chilhng.
3. Another outstanding
benefit of the trips is the
feeling of pride to be an
American. The best way I
can illustrate is by saying if
you had been on our 707 jet
on the return from Brazil
and heard our party sing
“God Bless America” when
we spotted the United
States Mainland I believe
you would have had that
same feeling of patriotism.
4.1 have been hired by the
Board of Trustees to work
within the purpose philoso
phy, and budget of the col
lege to build an athletic pro
gram that will be a valuable
and integral part of the insti
tution. As long as our stu
dent body, supporters, trus
tees, and administration lend
the positive hand of support
they have, I will continue to
work diligently to fulfill our
goals.
I hope this wiU provide
some clarification for those
who would like to hear the
positive side of the letter to
the editor. I would like to
say in closing that I enjoy
having the opportunity to
work with Gardner-Webb. I
will welcome any discussion
and be glad to face anyone
face to face concerning opin
ions and suggestions they
feel are of benefit to the
overall college program.
However, at the same time I
am going to continue to give
my time and effort in a posi
tive manner toward building
a stronger program and try
ing to understand that re
gardless of what you do
there will always be those
who disagree. It is not my
air to win an argument in
regard to this matter. I am
simply pointing out a few of
the positive aspects of the
trips.

Editor's Comment:
I would like to thank Coach Holbrook for this letter and
the information given to me. Many students will be thankful
to the Bulldog Club, now that they know the purpose of this
organization.
A lot of questions have been answered and this will stop
people with their rumors.
One other concern is the cheerleaders. These people who
went on the Rio de Janerio trip paid for their own way.
Many students thought they went free but this was wrong.
Wofford Caughman
“Him”
He is here, He is there. He is everywhere,
hut yet I know Him not.
Everywhere I go, everything I do. He is there;
and still I know Him not.
In my sleep, in my awakeness, in my dreams. He is there;
I know Him not.
Though I know He is there and here sometimes,
I find myself afraid to confront Him.
For one who loves me as much as He does;
He has to be a true god.
I mean, as much as he tries to enter my life,
I shut Him out.
Yet His love is still there.
Our day of meeting will come,
And that day will be a joyous one.
