Page 2, THE PILOT The Editor Comments Dr. WiHieuns An Asset To G-W In We Long Run Dr. Craven Williams, Gardner-Webb’s ninth president has no doubt been throughly examined in each ones mind. Opinions have been formed and doubts and fears probably erased. Dr. Williams readily made himself available during the first month of school and everyone had the opportunity to meet him and to talk with him. Dr. Williams seems to be a man of intelligence in that he is at ease in a small closed group and has the ability to grasp questions and think them through before answering, a rare and unique talent in today’s world. Dr. Williams openly ad mitted that he doesn’t have all the answers but is willing to work toward possible solutions. He is to be commended for not trying to be all things to all people. In the area of adequately funding some non self-support ing sports here at G-W Dr. Williams said that he would “take into consideration some special items, look them over and request recommendations” for those involved. Dr. Wil liams supports some parts of Title IX commenting that “some things in it are right.” He defends that policy of female students having to sign in and out “as a necessary courtesy.” Dr. Williams sees no immediate decrease in the part that students pay (tuition) for the maintenance of the college. Dr. Williams appears to be the young, energetic, and dynamic leadership that G-W needs, yet this may be a pre mature assertion and it remains to be seen if his leadership can be effective, and consistent. We cannot adequately assess the job Dr. WDliams has done and is doing till per haps the end of this academic ye£ir. But we can say with a little degree of certainty that Dr. Craven Williams should be an added plus to the life here at G-W and also how we project ourselves to those outside the college family. h Dr. Williams at ease in his office during a recent conversation with a student. The following is the out line of the position of Gard ner-Webb College, Incor porated on H.E.W. Sex Dis crimination Regulations imder Title IX of The Edu cation Amendments of 1972. The Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Gardner-Webb College, In corporated, of Boiling Springs, North Carolina, has taken the following pnqltion on the Sex Discrimination Regulations the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare has issues under Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972: 1. We are totally in har mony with the goal of equal opportunity for both men and women in education and employment. Gardner-Webb College will do all in its power to support and imple ment this goal. 2. Gardner-Webb College does not receive any direct Federal financial assistance. We do enroll students who receive government assis tance such as NDSL, CWS, Veterans Benefits, SEOG, BEOG, and other Federally funded student aid pro grams. We ttfe not party to any Federal research con tracts. 3. In many of the require ments in the regulations, Gardner-Webb College is eJ- ready in compliance and in sofar as possible within the keeping of the published purpose of our College, the provisions of our Charter, and in keeping with the reli gious tenets upon which oiu- institution was foimded, we are willing to modify exist ing practices to achieve com pliance with the others. 4. The Acts of Congress requiring that there be no discrimination on the Notification of Titie iX coordinator and Titie IXgrievance procedure In compliance with 86.8 of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 972 and the regulations for implementation as set forth by the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare/Office for Civil Rights, the following individual has been appointed Title IX Coodinator of Gardner-Wfebb College, Incorporated: Mr. Barry D. Copies of the grievance for students has been posted at the following locations: 1. Bulletin boards beside Room 113 CID Building 2. Bulletin Board in the game room of CID Building A copy of these procedures may be obtained upon request from the Title IX Coordinator. grounds of race, color, na tional origin or sex “under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance,” are al ready being complied with by Gardner-Webb College and have our imqualified support. 5. Many questions have been raised, and are still not clear, on the immediate obli gation of private educa tional institutions to coniply with sections of the Title IX regulations related to ath letic programs. We do not find that it will be too diffi cult for Gardner-Webb Col lege to comply with our understanding of the regula tions, and we will as soon as possible develop our pro gram plan to accommodate the interests and abilities of both L^xes, certainly within the three-year period. In practical experience and practice, we believe our pre sent program of athletics very nearly conforms with the intent of the regulations and will need only minor ad justments. 6. Title IX contains an exclusion for educational in stitutions controlled by churches, “If the application of Title IX would not be con- ' sistent with the religious tenets of such organiza tion.” In cases such as sepa rate housing for the sexes, policies and rules promoting high moral standards for students and employees, our institution claims exemp tion under the law. The above statement is being published by Gardner- Webb in compliance with Section 86.9 of the regula tions requiring publication of a “Notification of Policy.” VJP/s sftare Honriecoming weeiiend High school students who are prospective G-W students are here for the weekend to share with and participate in our Homecoming festivities.
