Page 4, THE PILOT Bulldogs First Winning Season Since 1972-73 The football season is now behind us, but the Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb can look back and be proud, for their season was the best at GW since 1972 when the Bulldog football team played in the Poultry Bowl. The final record of 7 wins to 4 losses does not reflect the true success of the Bulldogs football team this year. The Bulldogs tied the record for most wins in a season, 7. Fewest points allowed -139, most yards rushing - 2824, best rushing average - 256.7, longest winning streak - 4, most offensive plays - 739. Johnny Walker has had the most successful career of any Bulldog, he has rushed for a career record of 1,360 yards, scored the most points of any Bulldogs players. But if Walker is a great player, then his line is great, made up of guys like Jim Furlough, Jeff Carter, Mark Clas sen, Jody Douglas, and Bob Barnes. The whole team has played well, and worked hard to make the fine job done by Coach Jaynes and Sandford, and the rest of the Bulldog coaching staff. The defense showed great power and determination with such excellent play from Frankie Smith, Mike Briggs, Dennis Thurman, and David Howard. The Pilot Staff wishes to congratulate the 1977 Bulldog football team on a job well done, and hopes for a brighter season ahead. Football Wrap-Up ALL DISTRICT 26 ALL SAC 8 Johnny Walker. . . . GW beat Portugal in the first game 119 to 58. The next game saw another GW victory over China 117 to 77. The third encounter showed total Gardner- Webb dominance by upsetting Czechoslovakia 96-87. Lew Young made All Tournament by pouring in a total of 86 points, 32 the first night, 30 against China, and 24 in the finale. As of now the Bulldogs remain undefeated. The kicking Bulldogs Gardner-Webb’s soccer team won a scrimage against the Shelby Adult soccer league. The score 10 to 1 showed just how good the Bulldogs are. Congratula tions to Coach Prevost for a fine .500 season. The lady Bulldogs basketball team is currently 3-1 on the season with a win against Meredith College and a loss to Winston-Salem State. Third-Floor Lutz -Yelton won this year’s Intramural Foot ball Championship by defeating Richard Brunson’s team by by a score of 18 to 6. The game, played in the rain, proved to to be too much for Brunson’s team, which only won the honor of a case of the flu. 3rd Floor ended the season with an 11 win, 1 loss, 1 tie record. nnce 450 lbs. Marvin is pleased with this because he began the season with only 405. While playing football at Gardner-Webb little has been said about Marvin, but the team is aware of his pre sence, and the coaches feel he is an important part of the team. While at Gardner- Webb, he has played four different positions on the team: defensive back, defen sive end, wide receiver, and tight end. He has faced many in juries and played with se vere pain at times, but Mar vin says, “I always try to play my best, and to beat my opponent, because both the team and the school de pend on every person doing their best, and striving to wards perfection.” Marvin plans to teach and coach in Georgia if he can not play pro football, which has been his dream since childhood. His hobbies are weight lifting, and running. He likes to keep in top physical condition. Marvin also enjoys student teaching at North Side School for the trainably mentally retarded. He says, “Helping others is an important goal of every person. Personal gain should stand in the shadows and never be seen.” Gardner-Webb’s ’77-’78 tennis squad, which finished its fall practice in October promises to be one of the finest in the school’s history. Coach Jim Taylor and his assistant, Randy Alexander, successfully, recruited several good freshmen prospects. Although no ranked players have join ed the team, three of the newcomers played number one for their high schools. Thus, according to Taylor, G-W should be more solid down the line and “we should win more matches because of this greater depth.” The three returning regulars from last year will be count ed upon heavily to anchor this year’s lineup. Randall Trog- don, who alternated with Glenn Phillips at the number one position last year, has improved over the summer and may be relied upon to occupy the top spot this year. Randall made it to the quarter-finals of the Shelby Charity Tourna ment which was eventally won by a former N.C. State standout. He was also a semi-finalist in the annual Gardner- Webb Fall Tournament, losing to the eventual chapion, T. J. Riley from Belmont Abbey. Glenn Phillips also promises to be a strong contender for the top spot. Glenn is a natural team lader, contributing greatly to the team morale, and is also a dedicated and com petitive athlete. He finished in the round of sixteen in the Shelby Charity Tournament losing to Trogdon. He also reached the semi-finals in the Gardner-Webb Tournament. The third returning letterman, David Seagroves, has been more consistent this fall and at times has shown the ability to compete with anyone on the team. David also faired well in the Shelby Charity Tournament, but perhaps his high light was winning the consolation finals of the Gardner- Webb tournament over teammate Irving Sistrunk. Irving, one of the strongest hitters on the team is dedicat ed to the game. He is a freshman from Wilmington where he played number two in high school. Irving is also a fine doubles player. Ted Cox, another freshman, played number one for Inde pendence High in Charlotte last year and encountered some of the best players in the state. Ted’s improvement at G-W has been paid, and he could develop into one of the best Bulldog netters ever if he continues to work hard. Gary Latimer is a freshman from Tuscola High School in Waynesville. He is a smooth and consistent performer and could be an excellent doubles player. Gary will definitely be heard of in the future. Dean Helton, a freshman from Bandys High School, is probably the best all-round athlete on the team and a very hard worker. He is said to be an intelligent student, also. Dean should see plenty of action this spring. Mike Chapman, a transfer, and Rick Henkle, a freshman, are the last two newcomers. Both have potential should add to the competitiveness of the team. David Cooley has been on the team longer than any of his fellow teammates. He is a fine person to work with and really makes tennis practice seem like fun. Mike England, a senior playing for the first time adds to the team’s unity with his friendliness and humor. Mike has solid strokes and could see some action. Jim Taylor has scheduled a tough season with matches in cluding UNC-C from the NCAA among Limestone, USC- Spartanburg, UNC-Asheville, Wofford and other District 26 teams. If the new talent gains the experience and confi dence expected, then the Bulldog netters may finally break the spell and have an excellent year. With fan support, the tennis team should be exciting to watch in the spring. Intramural Football Champs (Front Row, 1. to r.)
