THE PILOT, Page 2 COMING APRIL 1st Choral Ensemble Goes On Tour Dover Library Government Documents Collection Growing Our ever-growing coUecction of U.S. government docu ments has some major additions this year, the most impor tant of which is the new revision of the U.S.Code, which we are in the process of receiving. The U.S. Code, as many may know, gives U.S. laws currently in force, neatly indexed by subjecct and by popular name. Other recent additions are the Federal Register, C.I.A. maps and atlases, area hand books for many counnries, U. S. Geological Survey publica tions, and a very detailed suplemental volume to the U.S. budget, showing how our money is spent. But such docu ments don’t deal only with laws and governmental activity, they also contain information on energy, higher education, medicine, mental health, copyright, the handicapped, and a great deal of scientific information. We became a depository library in May 1974, and the building of our coUecction was begun under Ms. Mary Jo Bracken and now continues under Ms. Celeste Bryant. Some of the very first documents we subscribed to were U.S. Reports (Supreme Court opinions). Statutes at Large (U.S. laws in the complete text as passed), and the Congres sional Record (a daily verbatin report of Congressional acti vity, including voting records, remarks, and news high lights—very good for keeping up with the activities of your local Senator and representatives. Science Shorts During Spring Break, the Choral Ensemble will be go ing on a tour through South Carolina, Georgia, and Flori da. They will be giving a Sacred Music program in churches in Batesburg, S.C., Savannah, Ga., Callahan, Fla. Ocala, Fla., Dunedin, Fla., and in high schools in the area. Christopher Chosen As Symphony Soloist Carmen Christopher, of Shelby, a music graduate of Gardner-Webb College, has been chosen over several other finalists as the soprano soloist for the Asheville Symphony’s production of Verdi’s “Requiem,” to be held in the spring. Ms. Christopher was chosen over several finalists ia auditions last September. Symphony rehearsals will not begin until April, with the production scheduled on Saturday, April 22 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in AsheviUe. “I’m thrilled,” said Ms. Christopher, “and I’ll begin learning my part right away.” Singing opera and operatic concerts is not new for Carmen Christopher. While she was at Gardner- Webb, she had several leads in operatic workshop pro ductions, including “The Telephone” this fall. She was a soloist with the G-W Choral Union last May and sang with the North Caro lina Symphony String En semble when they produced Schubert’s Mass in G major here last spring. Carmen graduated from G-W in music in the spring of 1976, but returns to the campus for weekly lessons with Mrs. Harrelson. Ms. Christopher is associated with Belding-Lily Co. of Shelby. Letter To The Editor Mr. Jim Scarborough Gardner-W ebb CoUege Boiling Springs, North Carolina 28017 Dear Jim: I am replying to your letter that appeared in the PILOT concerning seating in the Bost Gym. I am certainly in sym pathy with your letter and I do not in any way intend this letter to be directed toward you in a negative manner. From the contents of your letter, I believe you fully realize the need for us to have the support of both the student body and the Bulldog Club. I would like for every student to have the opportunity to support the athletic program. In fact, I wish every student felt as strong as you feel about being at the game as you have indicated. Obviously, I could elaborate on your letter further however that is not my point. I do agree with you that we have a problem and perhaps we need to put a time limit on the Bull dog Club seats or work on a better solution. If, for example, the seats were not taken by a certain time prior to gametime they would be opened to the student body. We will certainly give your letter serious thought and see it we can come up with some solutions that could be more workable than the present conditions. Again, may I thank you for your concern and interest in being able to be present for the games. Sincerely, Eddie Holbrook The Pilot Editor Harvey L.
