THE IP PILOT Gardner-WfebbCdkge THURSDAY, MAY 11, 1978 BOILING SPRINGS. NORTH CAROLINA Staff Members Conclude 47 Years of Service Dorothy Edwards Registrar 30 Years Service When poets want to represent ideas in their poetry, they often turn to a device known as personification. Characters thus are named Honor, Truth, Virtue, and Cour age. If a poet were to apply the technique to the life and work of Mrs. Dorothy Edwards, he would likely call her Patience. Mrs. Edwards is retiring from Gardner- Webb this year after having served for thirty years as the college registrar. In a job which demands constant attention to detail, periods of hectic activity, and con tinual face-to-face contact with students, Mrs. Edwards has been more than could reasonably be expected. Characteristically, Mrs. Edwards sees her work as more than academic bookkeep ing: “I always try to give a personal word of encouragement to the students. It makes every difference in the world - to show that you’re interested in someone, where he or she is from, what someone is planning to do. I think we all lose something when you lose that personal touch. Each individual is of personal worth, regardless of his race, his financial status, or whatever it may be. If you respect and show you’re interested in someone, it makes a difference. To me, that is the difference in just education and Christian education—that personal rela tionship and care and concern.” Through the years, students have res ponded to Mrs. Edwards’ care in both publice and private acts of respect. Twice they have dedicated their yearbook to her. More importantly, hundreds have taken with them a sense of her dedication to pro fession, to the Gardner-Webb community, and to Christianity. We shall miss her patience. Mrs. Grace Lee. Director of the Nursing Program here will retire at the end of Au gust. Mrs. Let;, who came to GWC in 1965, was assigned to launch and direct a pro gram of nursing education here. “That she has been successful in the endeavor there is no doubt. This year the 12th class of nurs ing will graduate from the school,” said Jerry McGee. Mrs. Lee came from Rutherford Hos pital, where she was director of their dip loma program in nursing. Before then, she had had extensive experience in both nurs ing serve and nursing education. She was with Cleveland Memorial Hospital in Shel by, Fort Pierce Hospital in Florida, the Biltmore Unit of MemoritJ Mission Hospi tal in Asheville, Rowan Memorial Hospital in Salisbury and Director of Nursing Edu cation at Rockingham Memorial in Har risonburg, Virginia. Mrs. Lee has studied at Duke University, Florida State University, the University of North Carolina, where she received her Master of Science degree in Nursing Educa tion Administration, and special study at Teachers Colllge, Columbia University, and the University of Manchester in England. After more than 25 years of nursing and nursing education, Mrs. Lee plans to visit the British Isles next summer and to study their home health services. On behalf of the Pilot Staff and the Student Body of GWC, we thank Mrs. Lee for a job well done. Grace Lee Director of Nursing 12 Years Service Howard Haire Business Department Chairman 5 Years Service Retirement is not in the vocabulary of Dr. Howard Haire, who is currently serving as chairman of Business Administration. Dr. Haire is leaving Gardner-Webb in May to move to Conway, South Carolina, where he will do psychological research in connec tion with writing for the University of South Carolina. Dr. Haire said that he re tiring from G-W but not from work because he always wants to be challenged by learn ing and doing research. Dr. Haire was bom and raised in Johns town, Pennsylvania. He received his educa tion at Catholic University and the Uni versity of Maryland.
