Page 4, THE PILOT Bulldogs Schedule Tough Opponents The SAC-8 conference gets stronger every year!! This is evidenced by the fact that our dogs, with about 16 starters returning and several promising returnees and newcomers were picked in pre-season polls to finish 5th or 6th. Elon, Presbyterian and Lenoir-Rhyne were picked to come out on top this year. Concerning the schedule, Coach Billy Kinard said, “We’re playing the games one at a time. You can’t jump ahead— you can’t look ahead. You’ve got to take it one step at a time —whether it be life, football or whatever.” He praised the good attitude of the players and stressed the importance of teamwork. He pointed out that when a group of football players is functioning as a team and one get hurt, someone will be there to “take up the slack.” Coach Kinard and his staff will be installing the I forma tion, along with the veer, as the basic offense this year. One of the biggest holes to fill will be the nmning back slot vacated by all-American Johnny Walker. Senior Obbie Todd, famous for his “post-touchdown flips,” and promis ing sophomore Robbie Barnes provide a good nucleus in the backfield to build on. Also returning is quarterback, Dennis Stilley, a senior, who performed well last year before missing the last four games due to an injury. Matt Ballard, a junior, also saw action last year at quarterback. A key ne^ this year is a fullback who can run and block, both essential qualities in the I formation. Leading candidates for this spot are Lee Robertson, a transfer from Lees-McRae, Duke McIntyre, and Ken Bennett. Wide receivers G.T. Johnson and Marc Walker return, as does tight end Marvin OUver from Rome, Ga., who caught seven passes last year in addition to doing some good blocking up fi-ont. The offensive line is anchored by two-time all SAC-8 per formers Jeff Carter at guard and Mark Classen at tackle. Other key performers are expected to be Bob Hopkins at guard, and Steve Crane at center—both juniors. Defensively, Coach Kinard feels a key need is to find replacements for departed stellar performers, Dennis Thur man and Frank Smith. Leading hopefuls are Gene Walden, 225 senior and Freshman David Boyd, 235 from York, S.C. Defensive ends are expected to come fi-om the threesome of senior Dave Guthrie, senior Roy Kirby and sophomore A1 Keitt. Junior Noel Wiseman, a terrific tackier and starter from last year, returns at noseguard. The dogs will be strong as linebackers with starters Mike Briggs and David Howard returning. Considerable experience returns to the defensive backfield in the likes of comerbacks Chris Johnson and Don Montgomery along with safety Alvin Lee. Mike Briggs and newcomer Tim Davis are expected to handle the kicking game this year. Coach Kinard’s philosophy is one which stresses the importance of a good student body attitude toward the foot ball team. He also wants the footbaU team to be an integral part of the student body and recognized as “students at GWC” as opposed to football players and athletes. We like it this way, too. Let’s all get behind the team this year with our presence at the games and cheer them on to a successful season!! The complete G W schedule is as follows: September 13 Newberry 7:30 Away 23 Mars Hill 7:30 Home 30 Liberty 7:30 Home October 7 Lenoir-Rhyne 7:30 Away 14 Catawba 2:00Home 21 Carson-Newman 7:30 Away 28 Elon (Homecoming) 7:30 Home November 4 Presbyterian 3:00 Away 11 Hampton Institute 2:00 Home 18 Wofford 7:30 Away Netters To Face Demanding Fall Season Dr. Jim Taylor, tennis coach, has arranged a fall practice schedule which promises to be very tough for this year’s squad. After having an excellent season last spring, Taylor decided the way to best be ready for the next spring was to play the best competition possible in the fall. "The first participation of our tennis team was in Shelby Charity Tournament. The Bulldog Netters had one of the finest showings ever. Gardner-Webb’s own four-college tournament was held Saturday, September 16, with UNCC, Limestone, Pheiffer, and G-W participating and Limestone winning. Gardner-Webb also faced South Carolina power. Lander, on Saturday, September 23. As the Gardner-Webb fall tennis season gets into fuU swing, the players look ahead with excitement and anticipa tion of an excellent year. Those fortunate fans, who take the opportunity to come out and watch the Bulldog Netters this fall, should not be disappointed in what they see. Volleyball at G-W This year Gardner-Webb is adding to its list of inter collegiate sports, girls volleyball, which will be coached by Phyllis Little field, who is also the girls’ basketball coach. Coach Lit tlefield says the team should do well this year. The big gest trouble is in getting six girls who have never played together before to work to gether as a unit. The girls did not have long to practice before their first game, which was an away game against Limestone on Sep tember 20. The season’s most promising player is Freshman Mary Cudd, a for mer high school All-Ameri- can volleyball player. The Intramural Scene The intramurals for the Fall 1978 semester have got ten off to a good start under the direction of Intramural Director, Dr. David Gard ner, and his assistants, Malinda Childers and Mack Polk. “The purpose of intra- murals,” says Dr. Gardner, “is to give all students and faculty the opportunity to participate in sports activi ties.” This year promises to be a busy one with three new events scheduled—water basketball, volleyball, and a turkey trot—in addition to the usual slate of activities. Karate lessons (sponsored by the Intramural Dept.) are offered each Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in the gym at no charge. If anyone has ques tions regarding intramurals, see Dr. Gardner or your In tramural Handbook. Good luck to all participants. G-W Welcomes New Coaches DANNY DALTON KEITH RODEN 'The G-W Men’s basketball team is now under the leader ship of Jim Wiles, head coach, and Tommy Gaither, assist ant coach. Coach Wiles comes from Anderson Junior College in South Carolina where he has led his teams to a ten year record of 248-65. Coach Wiles has also led his Anderson teams in the Nationfd Junior College Tournament three out of the last four years. His teams have also won eight conse cutive Western Carolina Junior College Conference Champ ionships and the Region X title four out of the past five years. Assistant coach Gaither comes to G-W from Lower Rich land High in S.C. and a few years ago served as assistant coach at Clemson University. The new football coaches are Keith Roden, Mike Whitley, and Danny Dalton. Roden coached at the Citadel as a grad uate assistant during the 1975-76 season and was nnmpH fuU time assistant in 1977. Roden is curently coaching the offen sive line for the Bulldogs. Mike Whitley was former head football coach at Andrews High, in S.C. from 1974-77. Whit ley is currently coaching the defensive Une and linebackers for the Bulldogs. Danny Dalton, former Carson-Newman pass receiver and quarterback coach, is currently coaching the offensive backfield and receivers for the Bulldogs. The Pilot staff would like to welcome these fine coaches to G-W and wish them and the players the best of luck this season.
