GW Starts Program In Human Services Gardncr-Webb has initiated a pro gram of study leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services. The program, started in August, con sists of 64 semester hours and is in tended for students holding an Asso ciate Degree in Mental Health or Human Services with at least an over all grade average of 2.0 (C). Students may complete 12 hours per semester by attending classes two evenings per week. The total tuition for 12 semester hours is $540. A North Carolina legislative grant of $237.00 per semester is given to students carrying 12 semester hours, reducing the cost to $303.00. Based upon assessment of need, the student may be eligible for additional financial aid. Dr. Roger Gaddis is the program co ordinator. Putnam Named New Editor To The Web Summer graduates prepare to receive degrees Thirty-Eight Graduate In Summer Commencement Thirty-eight students were gradu ated from Gardner-Webb College Saturday, August 11, in commence ment exercises held in the Boiling Springs Baptist Church. The candidates, presented by Academic Vice-President Robert Knott included 27 for Bachelor of Science degrees, nine for Bachelor of Arts degrees and two for Asso ciates Arts degrees. After Dr. Larry Sale, dean of continuing education and summer school offered the invocation, Patricia B. Harrelson, assistant pro fessor of voice and David W. Smith, assistant professor of music presented a duet, “Let Us Make A Joyful Noise.” Dr. Craven Williams, President of the College introduced the speaker. Dr. Carl E. Bates, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Charlotte. In Dr. Bates’ address dealing with successful living, he states, “1 want to share the prayer of my heart for each of you. First, I pray that you may be loyal servants of Jesus Christ. Second, 1 pray that you may live your lives with singleness of minds. Finally, I pray that you may not turn aside until your goal of life is reached.” Dr. Williams and Dr. Knott con ferred the degrees and Reverend Robert W. Abrams, Director of Church Relations gave the benedic tion. DEBBIE B. PUTNAM Debbie Boggs Putnam has been named director of information serv ices at Gardner-Webb, a key posi tion on the administrative staff of the college. Mrs. Putnam, a native Cleve lander, carries the responsibilities of assisting in planning and executing promotional campaigns, coordina ting and supervising the relations of the college with the public through the news media. She is also responsible for pre paring audiovisual presentations and the design of brochures and posters. She serves as the college editor providing editing assistance to all departments. Also, she is a member of the advisory board to the campus radio station, advisor to the Yearbook and editor of “The Web,” an alumni publication. In announcing Mrs. Putnam’s ap pointment, President Craven Wil liams stated, “Mrs. Putnam is a per son with many talents who will bring creativity and imagination to this important position.” Formerly a writer and photo grapher for The Cleveland Times, Mrs. Putnam edited an in dustrial publication for several years and has engaged in freelance writ ing for newspaper and radio adver tisements in the past. A graduate of Burns High School in Lawndale, she received her A.A. and B.S. degrees from Gardner- Webb College. She and her husband, Mike Put nam, vice-president of E O Cor poration reside at Route 4, Shelby with their son, Mikey. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Boggs of Fallston.
