Construction Begins On
Convocation Center
An announcement of a $200,000 gift to the Lutz-Yelton Con
vocation Center from Paul B. Porter was made during the
Fall Convocation program, Sept. 4. Pictured (left to right)

Webb Board of Trustees, Mr. Porter, Chairman of the
Board of Porter Brothers, Inc. and President Craven
Williams. (Photo by Pete Decker)
This story is for those old
timers who remember the
long-neglected mudflats in
between Myers and Spang
ler dorms and the stadium.
At last, thanks to a one-half
million dollar gift from the
Lutz-Yelton Foundation Inc.
and a $200,000 contribution
from Paul B. Porters, Inc. of
Shelby, construction has
begun on the Lutz-Yelton
Convocation Center! The
announcement of the Porter
gift was made during Fall
Convocation, even while the
construction crew had al
ready started digging.
The history of gifts
toward the building of the
Convocation center is char
acterized by generosity.
Over 500 people have been
reponsible for the attain
ment of $3,150,000 in
pledges. The Paul Porter
by Debbie Drayer
gift makes another pledge
possible: at the August
graduation ceremonies,
President Williams an
nounced that the Kresge
Foundation had designated
an $150,000 challenge grant
for the convocation center,
providing that a matching
$550,000 could be secured.
Responding to the Porter
gift, Hobart Smith, chair
man of the Board of Trust-
tees said, “The splendid gift
from Paul Porter gets us off
to a fine beginning on meet
ing the Kresge challenge.”
When completed, the Con
vocation Center will house
one of the most sophisticat
ed basketball arenas in the
area, to be called the Paul
Porter Arena. Also included
will be the Wayne DeHart
Arcade; physical education
classes, a “human perform
ance” laboratory and a fine
arts facility capable of seat
ing 600, named in honor of
Mrs. Kathleen Dover.
Commenting upon the im
portance of the 65,000 sq.-
foot structure, Dr. Craven
Williams said, “The comple
tion of this building will fill a
major void in the life of this
campus. Our musicians have
no stage on which to per
form. The completion of this
building will fix that. Our
Health and Physical Educa
tion majors have no labora
tory and activity areas. The
completion of this building
wiU fix that. Our basketball
team has no arena approp
riate for their skUls. The
completion of this building
will fix that. Our 1500 stu
dents have no recreational
area for free play. The
completion will fix that.”
