Student Feature Dwayne Harris: Full-Time Worker, Full-Time Student by Jeff Melton If you will for a mo ment, try to imagine wak ing up every morning at 8 a.m., getting to class by 9, getting done with classes by 1 p.m., going home and catching your breath be fore going to work at 4 p.m. For the next eight hours, from 4 to midnight, you work yourself to death. Then you go home, go straight to bed, and you do the same thing all over again, day in and day out. The average student would think this is too hectic a Ufestyle to keep up for very long. Why, it’s a miracle that some students can do anything but sleep or watch television. They don’t need to be tied down to a full-time job when they have meetings to go to, or other extracurricular things to do. Who but who needs a 6-day, 48-hour a week job anyway? It takes a special breed of person to be able to manage a lifestyle as fast- paced as the one just des cribed. It requires the ut most determination and concentration on his or her part to juggle the ele ments that are needed to be a complete success. Dwayne Harris of Cliff- side is one such person. He is employed with Cone Mills Corporation in Cliff- side as second shift super visor in the card room. He is a business major here at Gardner-Webb. He is mar ried to Audrey Camp Har ris, a Gardner-Webb sen ior majoring in computer science. Harris decided to re enter Gardner-Webb this fall, after a year and a half absence. Harris got mar ried, started to work at Cone, and worked his way to the top of the ladder. Finally, his big break came in the early part of 1985, when he attained the position he presently holds. Harris, with the supervisor job firmly in his hands, decided that he wanted to finish a job he had started; getting a bachelor’s degree from Gardner-Webb College. “I had been thinking about going back all sum mer, and finally her I am back this year,” Harris stated. “I guess that super visor’s job made me just a little determined.” Being a supervisor at Cone Mills is noit an easy job, however, according to Harris. “Some people who work down here (at the plant) seem to think that being the boss is an easy job. I’ve heard that from many of my employees. They just don’t realize what I have to do, all the little things I have to keep a watch on. Today, more than ever, the textile in dustry must be the best as far as quality goes. And that requires the best from every employee. It’s a hard job all the way around.” Harris, on his two lives a day situation, points out that “it’s no piece of cake.” Certainly it is not, because there is hardly anytime to study during the week. There is little time to do anything other than sleeping, working, and going to school. “This is really the first time I have ever worked full-time and gone to school full-time,” Harris says. “It’s kind of rough at first, but after getting used to it, things go a little Faculty Feature Dr. Jerry Slice The first new Gardner- Webb faculty member to be spotlighted in The Pilot is Dr. Jerry Shce, who is Assistant Professor Of Economics. Dr. Slice attended Clemson University and Mississippi State Univer sity for his education. His previous teaching experi ence came at MSU, where he served as a graduate teaching assistant in the Economics Department. Slice’s decision to teach at Gardner-Webb was in- fdluenced by the institu tion’s emphasis on teach ing, opposed to other col leges’ stress on research. He especially appreciates the Hberal arts environ ment on campus. Another reason for Slice choosing Gardner-Webb is that it is near his hometown of Newberry, S.C. Dr. Slice feels that the college has a great teach ing program, and unlike some colleges, Gardner- Webb teachers “teach be cause they want to teach.” When asked to give his opinion of fellow faculty members. Slice responded, “I hold them in high es teem. They have been very helpful in getting me situ ated. He stated that the more smoothly.” Finding the time to study is the main problem for the working student. Sometimes, these students must sacrifice their leisure time on weekends and get caught up on their home work, while everyone else is at the ball game or doing other things. In Harris’ case, the study problem is familiar. He can occasionally be seen reading his manage ment text during his breaks at work. “Some times, I’ll go home after work and read over my notes for about an hour,” he said. But most of his studying is done on the weekend. “I manage to get it all done though, somehow.” “Perhaps, after reading about Dwayne’s ex perience, and hearing other textimonials such as this, students will see that they really do have plenty of time to get their study ing done. The whole point of this article is to make students aware that their academic situation could be a great deal more com plicated. Balloon Creations Beason Street — Boiling Springs, N.C.
