Page 4 Broderick Chapman plays Santa Phi Beta Lambda Gives Food. The Phi Beta Lambda business organization experienced the true joy of giving this Christmas. Through the cooperation of the Cleveland County Health Department and Broderick Chapman, Head of food services at Gardner—Webb College, Phi Beta Lambda was able to give a $100 donation to needy families. Mr. Chapman also raised money for these families by dressing as Santa and posing for photographs at the cost of .50 apiece. This combined effort of the Phi Beta Lambda business organization and the Food Service Committee allowed five families to enjoy a happy holiday season. Included in these five families were ten children who may not have had Christmas otherwise. S.C.B. Concert by David Kahler For this only being four weeks into the semester, the Student Center Board has been quite busy sponsoring many activities. They began the semester with a back - to - school festival, featuring a dance with D.J.'s, Skate at Kate's, and the movie ''Romancing the Stone.'' Add to that two movies - ''Blackbeard's Ghost'' and ''Mr. Mom, ' ' the comedy show ' 'We Can Make You Laugh,'' plus the ''Beach Party'' dance and you have got quite an array of activities for early in the semester. To stay updated on future SCB events, read your Scroll, and the Handbook. Letter to Ed. cont. ''The role of Christians at Gardner-Webb is to wake-up and reach out. To help others (who need it) without regard to color, creed, or race. To stop beating around the bush and to be true to the Christian calling.'' I feel that this is not a time for thinking one way and talking another. I am guilty in a lot of ways of not being true at times. I think it would be fair to assume that all of us at times have thought of giving up, but I have learned through experience that God will not let us down. Wake-up Gardner-Webb!!! Why do we enforce one law , while we totally disregard another? We are quick to quote the law that pertains to dorm damage while we totally ignore the law that deals with alcoholic beverages on campus. As a Christian campus it is our duty to be totally ethical in all aspects of our lives here at Gardner-Webb. If we are to be His followers then it is high time that we make an ethical foundation as to where our loyalties really lie. Yours In Christ, Rev. Elton L, Williams If you have a club event or special meeting coming up, The Pilot is very interested in hearing about it. Please contribute your items typed to Dr. Stowe, or Mary Moore, Box 1019 by the second week of every month. Pogo’s Punk, Funk, and Junk a. Meat Puppets ‘‘Up on the Sun’’ by E. Pogo Costley The Meat Puppets are a trio of strange fellows hailing from Arizona, and have had a cult-like following there for several years. Their latest album, ' 'Up On The Sun,'' features intrinsically introspective lyrics and extremely difficult guitar riffs which, when blended with their western heritage, produce a complex sound that has been compared to the Grateful Dead. Although the Meat Puppets lack the vocal prowess of veterans like Garcia and Weir, their Neil Young-style crooning is inoffensive and often lends authenticity to their folk-like style. The Meat Puppets are not simply a re-hash of the sound of the ''Dead''; their style has a distinctively modern flavor, and songs like ''Buckethead' ' and ''Swimming Ground'' reflect the influence of new wave, both in sound and lyric content. 'The Meat Puppets' unique style will undoubtedly guarantee them a strong following, although ''top 40' ' doesn't seem to be one of their main concerns. If you like the Grateful Dead, you'll like the Meat Puppets. If you re interested in buying this album, the nearest retailer that is sure to have it in stock is Schoolkid's Records in Charlotte... good luck anywhere else. b. Shriekback ‘‘Oil and Gold’’ Freedom from Cigarettes QUITTING. IT COULD BE THE TEST OF YOUR LIFE. %08 uem ajoiu s.m a Kicking the smoking habit is as difficult as taking physics first semester freshman year. So if you want to quit smoking, it is important to plan your counterattack against the nicotine impulse. How do you plan your freedom from cigarettes? Robert Shipley, Ph.D., director of Duke University Medical Center's Quit by E, Pogo Costley Shriekback was the conception of former Gang of Four bassist Dave Allen and keyboardist Barry Andrews, who formerly worked with Robert Fripp. Shriekback has a sound reminiscent of other post-punk artists, and their music is permeated with shimmering keyboards and lyrics like ''...everybody happy as the dead come home.'' This is definitely not material for the squeamish, and the new album, ''Oil and Gold'', is filled with post-punk gloom a la Los Angeles' 45 Grave. These London rockers scored a minimal nightclub hit with the ominous ''Nemesis'', one of the more danceable cuts from this album, and. Smoking Clinic, said planning your freedom from cigarettes depends on skill rather than will power. Those skills include the knowledge of how to prepare yourself to quit, how to break the physical addiction to nicotine and how to maintain a nonsmoking lifestyle. incidently, the one from which the above quote was taken. This is really quite a good album, and Shriekback has carefully avoided the hardcore idiom that other post-punk groups often resort to. One of the real joys of this album is trying to decipher the phoenetic lyrics included on the inner sleeve. Also included are some liner notes on instrumentation, and it is nice to know that rock musicians are actually taking the new MIDI synthesizer interface system seriously. Shriekback's sound is reminiscent of Siouxsie and the Banshees, and thus they deserve serious attention...have a listen. learn how to relax without a cigarette, how to deal with the temptations to smoke, how to handle their anger in other ways than having a cigarette, and how to handle other activities usually cont. on o. 7
