THE PILOT, Page 2 From Your Editors Deborah Gravey & Melissa Brown As we approach that time of year when the world is pregnant with the essence of "newness," Gardner-Webb is lending itself to some obvious and beneficial changes. We are set tling into the year with new faculty and staff members, a new dining ser vice, a new campus look, and, simul taneously, a new PILOT. In redesigning the shape of Gardner-Webb’s printed news medium, we, as your editors, would appreci ate some exclusive Bulldog feedback. You see, we here at the PILOT rea lize that a newspaper is nothing without the audience to which it caters, and we feel that this aud ience should have the largest influ ence on the product we put forth. So why not add some of your own ingre dients to the soup? Give us your ideas and suggestions and truly help to make the PILOT Gardner-Webb’s newspaper;—your newspaper. Pilot Editorial Policy The PILOT’S policy for letters to the editor remains that the letter must be signed by the stu dent in order for it to be published. The name may be withheld upon request. PILOT Pilot Advertising Policy We reserve the right to refuse advertising which is detrimental to the Christian nature and spirit of the in stitution. The rates are $2.50 per column-inch. Student Editorial Cafe Gourmet It is about time we had something good to say about the cafeteria and the food! As a member of the Food Committee my Freshman and Sophomore years and as the Com mittee Chair last year,it gives me great pleasure to see the improvements that have been made and are continuing to be made. Of course, they are being made when I am no longer part of the Food Com mittee, but al though I cannot take any credit for it, I can still enjoy the benefits during my last year here at the Web. The cafe teria has gone through several changes which I am sure everyone has noticed, with the excep tion of new stu dents . The ser ving line has been changed around for more efficiency; ceiling fans, plants, and other decora tions have been added to the cafeteria to make it look nicer for the people who eat there. I would like to also mention a few of the people who have been invol ved in making these changes possible, and extend my thanks and I cim sure, that of the en tire student body for giving us the appropri ate food service. First of all, recogni tion should go to Mr. Charlie Gerchman, Direc tor of Food Services, and his assistant Ms. Pam Scruggs, and Mrs. Glenda Dalton, who is in charge of catering, for all their hard work and cooper ation. I would also like to mention Mr. cont. on p.3 Enjoy your new food! A Banner Idea Recently, with the football team’s success, a renewed school .spirit has arisen. This renewed school spirit is best described in a banner that flew in the cafeteria in recent weeks. The banner, however, was not to the approval to all stu dents here at Gardner-Webb. Why you might ask? Well the banner implied a naughty word. Anticipating that the word would offend, the cheer leaders decided to symbolically sug gest the word, taking care not to graphically present it. The word was A-symbol-symbol-symbol. The spirited cheerleaders helped the naive stu dent body out by adding these words before the mystery word;"We kicked." EUREKA! "We kicked A-symbol-symbol- symbol." An interesting, but yet "offending" statement. The senate, responding to this atrocity, decided it was in the best interest of the "moral majority" of students to re move the offensive portion of the banner. Mr. Lutz, who was at this meeting, "had not noticed the banner until it was pointed out to him," decided it was in bad taste and had offended several students. So he called Hank Garrity who is in charge of the cheerleaders. One thing led to another and the distraught cheer leaders tore the A-symbol-symbol- symbol off. The banner was of course illegal as it was not approved by the student body Vice-President Tracy Jessup. Thus it would be understandable if the entire banner had been removed, but why just the A-symbol-symbol-symbol portion? This entire situation brings up an inter esting question: Is our faith as strong as we say it is? In Luke 17: 6, Jesus tells us that if our faith were as strong as a mustard seed, we could move the largest mountain. If our faith is not strong enough to handle a little word like A-symbol- symbol-symbol , how can we be ex pected to move mountains? Think about it. This infamous incident shows us that we are not as almighty as we let on to be. It is the small things in life that cause our lives to change the most. Was the reac- "tion of our student body right or were they just showing the weakness of their faith? Write us a letter. R.Shawn Lewi s Features Editor
