f-y )i!l / THE PILOT Gardner-Wfebb Cdlege GRADUATES BOILING SPRINGS, NORTH CAROLINA ‘‘Special O’s: Really Special” By Kim Harris and Melissa Whitlow On Thursday, April 21, 1988, a very special annual event took place at Spangler Stadium. As it does every year, the Special Olympics came to Gardner-Webb. Dr. Lonnie Proctor is the director of Special Olympics annually and this year she had over 70 GWC students to parti cipate. Before the day of the Olympics, student workers made medals, put up posters, sell buttons, sell donation dollars from Hardee’s, and put dona tion banks out in the communi ty. Early Thursday morning, students put up balloons, streamers, and other decora tions, and set up stations. At 9:00 a.m., students met for the Olympians to begin setting up for the parade. The parade started at 9:15 with the Crest Senior High School Band lead- ding the way. After the invocation, given by Dr.M.Christopher White, the GWC sign choir signed the National Anthem and an amazing skydiving show be gan. A specially training U.S. skydiving unit known as the Golden Knights performed a variety of jumps, including one which showed how a defec tive parachute could be hand led . The Olympians were gree ted by some special guests and the torch was lit by partici pants Danny Hall and Billy Hamrick. The Olympians took the Special Olympic oath, the balloons were released, and the games began. Participants went to each station to play the games. The stations included: 50 meter race, wheelchair race, race walking, softball throw, bas ketball dribble, running broad jump, football throw, and frisbee accuracy.. Bojangles’ provided lunch, and after wards, the awards ceremony be gan. Medals were given out and the Olympians and coaches formed a Friendship Circle by holding hands, to signify the end of the Games. Special Olympics was sponsored by the Civitans, Plastic Oddities, Wagon Whee lers Square Dancers, Bojan gles’, Kate’s Skating Rink, Triple D, Exchange Club, and the Mental Health Association. Says coach Melissa Whitlow, "The kids are so special. Each different per sonality is a joy to work with.” THEATRE PREVIEW 1988 By R. Shawn Lewis Gardner-Webb Director of Theatre, John Brock, has an nounced two of the three plays for the 1988-89 season at Gardner-Webb. One of the two, "Little Shop of Horrors", will be a musical which will use an orchestra as well as a cast. The other play, a three- act comedy by Larry Shue, au thor of the hilariously funny play "The Foreigner", is enti tled "The Nerd". Tryouts for the plays will be held two weeks after the start of the 1988 Fall semester. Also on the horizon for thespianic affairs, the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival will present Shakespeare’s "Macbeth" on October 1st in the Dover Theatre. Mr. Brock also mentioned that there will be a few more goodies in store for Gardner-Webb students. Looking back at this past season, the GWC players tic kled our funny bones with Neil Simon’s "Barefoot in the Park". The comedy continued with "The Foreigner", which turned out to be one of the most successful plays in the history of Gardner-Webb’s the atre program. Student-direc ted one-acts followed the high tide of "The Foreigner”. In an attempt to renew what was once symbolic of Gardner-Webb the atre, the Greater Shelby Community Theatre presented a one act comedy to complete the student-directed one-acts playbill. Over 3,000 people attended plays at Gardner-Webb this year, and Brock’s aims are even higher for the upcom ing season. John Brock wishes to show his appreciation for the tremendous support given to the theatre by students, faculty, and members of the community at large. Softball Roundup By Burt Wilson The Gardner-Webb Lady Bulldogs suffered through an early season slump before get ting on track and playing .500 ball the second half of the season. Coming off the most suc cessful season in the school’s history, second-year coach Dr. Dee Hunt was looking for even greater .success in 1988. But a slow start and four close los ses of two runs or less left the Lady Bulldogs with an 0-8 early season record. They then won three straight games, defeating Wingate 6-5 in eight innings and taking a pair of games from Mars Hill, 5-4 and 18-6. Following several close losses, GWC rebounded and swept a doubleheader from Warren Wilson, 19-5 and 14-0. They then defeated Lenoir- Rhyne 6-5, Guilford 8-7, and took tv70 more games from Warren Wilson, 10-.3 and 7-2. The Lady Bulldogs ended the season with a pair of close losses to Catawba, 10-9 and 11-9. Their final record was 9-15. Members of this year’s team included: Mechelle Hamilton, Lisa Sabbarth, Gloria Campbell, Karen Kidd, Shawm Medlin, Susan Harrison, Lara Sellers, Donna Hendrix, Lisa Clark, Karen Ward, Gina Tipton, Rhonda Edwards, Amy Dellinger, and Kim Haywood. Several players had exceptional individual sea sons. Hendrix batted an incre dible .544 with 21 RBIs, 5 doubles, and 5 triples to lead the team in all four catego ries.
