The Fellowship of Christian
Athletes (FCA) here at Gardner-
Webb had many great moments
during the first semester,
featuring several guest speak
ers, many new members, and lots
of good Christian fun. The year
1989 holds new hopes and visions
and a desire to make FCA as suc
cessful as ever. However, for
this to happen, you the student
body need to get involved.
We come into the new year
with the addition of FCA council
members Chris Ruppe, Burt
Loftis, James Rowe, and Doug
Little. Along with veterans Paul
Crews, Doug Justice, Donna
Pritchard, MaryBeth Searcy,
Michele Philemon, and myself,
look for Tuesday nights to be
entertaining and a real blessing
for all who attend. Once again,
Brian Ferree and Tony Setzer
will serve as the official spon
sors for FCA.
Already scheduled for the
coming months are guest speakers
Rich Hardee, the Second Annual
FCA/Faculty basketball game
(Feb.23), and the annual trip
to Carowinds. If you would like
to sing, testify, or contribute
to our meetings in any way,
please let me or one of the
council members know.
Show your support for our
athletes by attending both the
men's and women's basketball
games— and show your support
for FCA by getting involved in
our meetings. Let us all work
to make 1989 a great year for
our Lord Jesus Christ! See you
on Tuesday nights at 9:00 p.m.
To the Editor,
I am writing to express my
outrage at the recent outbreak
of waterballoon attacks. Many
innocent bystanders have been
bombarded without warning. Some
"misguided individuals" on this
campus have not outgrown their
junior high pranks. Now the
third floor of Lutz-Yelton
dormitory is their playground.
Ordinarily happy people are
quickly becoming upset by these
pranksters. Those people who
must go near Lutz should do so
with extreme caution. Those
people participating in this
immaturity should realize that
we are not amused 1

Dawn Camp

To the Editors,
During exam week last semes
ter, the library encountered
some problems with its schedule.
The students who had Saturday
exams were not able to study in
the library since it closed at
9:00 p.m. Also, during the week,
the library did not stay open
later, as it had done in the
past.
On the Friday night before
Saturday exams, 60 people joined
me in the library to protest
the early closing. The librari
an, Valerie Parry, explained
that the library usually closed
at 5:00 p.m. , and that we should
be grateful that it was open
until 9:00 p.m. I told her that
we usually don't have Saturday
exams!
When the library closes at
11:00 p.m. most nights, there
are no other places to study
(unless we go to all-night res
taurants in Shelby) and this is
wrong. The students should not
have to go somewhere other than
this campus to study!
Security was called in, as
was Doug Lewis and Randy Kilby.
After explaining our complaint
to Mr. Lewis, he kindly opened
up the Lindsay Building for the
students until midnight. Those
of us who remained to study
there were grateful for his
generosity; however, we as stu
dents would not like this to
have to happen again.
We now have a study place in
the Student Center until 2:00
a.m.— but why not the library?
The dorm lobbies close at mid
night, so we can't really study
there. We've no place to go to
study after 2:00 a.m., unless
we're willing to drive to
Shelby, which we shouldn't have
to do.
One proposition is to extend
the library hours. Libraries on
larger campuses stay open to
3 a.m. year round! I'm not ask-
king for that, but instead I
would like to see the library
open until midnight year round
and 1:00 a.m. during exams.Also,
if the administration expects
Saturday exams to be successful,
the hours should be adjusted
drastically on the Friday nights
preceding them!
I would like to propose that
the school allocate some funds
for the construction of a 24-
hour building for the students.
We don't want another Student
Center, we just want a good
place to study! The building
need only to satisfy that need.
Dr. White, Dean Bonner, and
Dean Franklin, is it not impor
tant that the students at
Gardner-Webb succeed academical
ly? I should think so! But, we
can't do it a hamburger joint
in Shelby. Please either extend
the library hours or build a
study building for the students.
Sincerely,
Jane Richards
WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO
REFUSE ADVERTISING THAT IS
DETRIMENTAL TO THE
CHRISTIAN NATURE AND
SPIRIT OF THE INSTITUTION.
THE RATES ARE $3.00 PER INCH.
Dear President White and others
concerned.
The FELLOWSHIP OF CHRISTIAN
ATHLETES would like to express
our concern for the decision to
remove the Gardner—Webb track
team from competition for the
Spring 1989 season. There are
many athletes on this campus who
have trained for the season that
would have arrived very shortly,
but now they find themselves
having to go from person to per
son to find out the reason why
there will be no season.
Do you not realize that these
students are not asking for
much, just the chance to compete
and represent Gardner-Webb
College. They aren't given the
large scholarships that our
athletes in other sports are
given; they must find a way to
pay for their running shoes
(which are not cheap) , and if
uniforms are a problem, I feel
confident that they would be
glad to provide their own. How
is it that we can not find
somewhere in the Athletic
Department budget enough money
to provide a means of travel to
and from each meet? Several of
the runners are here on scho
larships and if track is can
celled, then it may be that
Gardner-Webb will lose some
valuable students, athletes, and
above all, friends.
As a leading organization on
the Gardner-Webb campus, FCA
represents Christian athletes
and a Christ-like concern for
all people. Please show some
concern for our track team and
their needs. Thank you.
TEAMMATES IN CHRIST,
Ronnie Warrick
President, FCA
To the Editors,
I am writing in regard to the
recent dissolving of the GWC
track team. I think that the
entire situation was handled in
a very unprofessional manner,
and had absolutely no regard for
the runners involved. I think
that when such a drastic deci
sion is made, individuals who
will be directly affected have
the right to some sort of ex
planation. I feel that we as
runners deserved the right to
some type of meeting, which
would have given us prior prep
aration to such action. This,
however, was not the case. The
bombshell was dropped on me as
I was in line to register for
classed earlier in the semester.
With much research on my
part, I have come to better un
derstand why such decisions were
made. I only hope that in the
future those responsible for
making such decisions will be
more considerate to those
affected.
