ORIENTATION ISSUE
BOILING SPRINGS, NORTH CAROLINA
What's New!
During the summer, several
changes occurred here at
Gardner-Webb that returning
students, as well as new
students, will immediately
notice. One of the most obvi
ous of these changes is the
installation of air condi
tioners in Lutz-Yelton and
Mauney Residence Halls. The air
conditioners will serve dual
purposes: cooling in the warm
season and heating in the cool
season. The addition of air
conditioners to Lutz-Yelton and
Mauney did raise the cost of
living in the residence halls,
but in the words of several
proud Lutz-Yeltonians, "It's
well worth it!"
Other improvements in these
two dorms include new lobby
furniture (also Royster), new
mattresses (Lutz only), and
smoke detection systems (all
male residence halls). These
are not the only residence hall
changes that occured over the
summer. H.A.P.Y., Stroup,
Decker, and Royster each
received a fresh coat of paint,
while 15 Royster roms received
new furniture. In Spangler and
H.A.P.Y, new locks and keys were
added.
Another change that stands
out is the consolidation of the
Dean of Women and Dean of Men
positions into one office. The
new position, filled by Ms.
Amber Culver, is the Director
of Residence Life. Mr. Doug
Lewis, formerly Dean of Men, was
moved to a newly-created post
as Director of Residence
Facilities. The former Dean of
Women, Ms. Ruth Kiser was named
to replace Jodi Manning as
Director of the Career and
Placement Services Office. In
her new position, Ms. Culver has
several responsibilities. Among
these, she will be implementing
a new training program for
Resident Assistants (RA's), in
addition to working to upgrade
the campus residence halls.
Freshmen especially will
notice the addition of the
Becoming A Master Student
course. The course, designed to
help incoming students develop
good study skills and habits
while helping them adapt to
college life, will be taught by
Drs. Jeff Tubbs, Sue Camp, and
Jack Partain, along with Ms.
Rhoda Sowers, director of the
office of Freshman Programs.
Some other changes include
additional swings and benches,
the naming of 1989 graduate Mr.
Tracy Jessup as Executive
Assistant to the President, and
a new cafeteria director, Mr.
Ray Cooper. Other new faces
include secretary for Campus
Ministries Maria Aldridge, Sandy
Lynch the new switch board
operator, and Angie Gibson as
assistant manager of the Campus
Shop.
Along with addition of these
new faces, Gardner-Webb will
lose three well-known faces.
Reverend Monk Ashley has
resigned to become the Associate
Pastor/Minister of Education at
First Baptist Church in Gaffney,
S.C. The Slices, Charlotte and
Jerry, have also left the
college. They will both be
employed by Presbyterian College
in Clinton, S.C.
The end of summer will not
mean the end of changes here at
Gardner-Webb. Future projects
include renovation of the Dover
Campus Center, the completion
of the Craven Williams
Observatory, and continued
campus beautification. Things
are happening at Gardner-Webb;
be a part of it!
Get Ready!
Gardner-Webb College get
ready! Ray Cooper is here and
he is ready for you!
Who is Ray Cooper, you ask?
Ray is the new Gardner-Webb
Dining Hall director. Through
the summer, while many GWC
students were basking in the
rays, Ray Cooper has been giv
ing the cafeteria a much-needed
major overhaul. Cooper and his
trusted confidant, Gary Jones,
have made both changes in
appearance and in food quality
(yes, that's right, food
quality). Where did these caped
crusaders come from, you ask?
Ray comes to Gardner-Webb
with over 3 0 years experience
in food service. Most recent
ly, Cooper was Assistant Senior
Director-Food Services at UNC-
Charlotte. Production Manager
Gary Jones arrived at Gardner-
Webb by way of Hastings College,
a private school in Nebraska.
Gary has over 8 years experience
in food service.
The list of improvements made
by these gentlemen is indeed an
impressive one:
1) A new salad bar with chilled
plates.
2) A new pastry bar (to be
located near the soft ice-cream
machine)
3) A menu board inside the
dining room, on which a new 4-
week menu will be located.
4) A monthly dining services
newsletter with menu for the
month.
5) Two hot food lines with
vegetables and entrees, a deli
bar, a fast food line, and a
new cereal bar at lunch and
dinner, in addition to the salad
bar.
6) A redesigned traffic flow to
the food service area.
As if these changes alone
were not enough, Ray and his
staff will feature a special
every week. These specials will
include "Banana Splits", "A
Night in Mexico", "Break- fast
Glamorama", and "Surf-n-Turf".
The above-mentioned 4-week menu
cycle will have an emphasis on
variety, nutrition, and student
acceptability.
"We' re providing a home away
from home," Cooper said with a
smile. "My door is always open."
Welcome to Gardner-Webb
College, Ray Cooper and Gary
Jones.
