THE m PILOT Gardner-WfebbCdkge ORIENTATION ISSUE BOILING SPRINGS, NORTH CAROLINA ALOHAf Tidal Waves By Noel T. Manning, II Chairman, Student Entertainment Association Hey! Watch out... Surf's up! ! ! Below you will find a few of the SEA sponsored events: August 26 9-12 midnight— Welcome Back Dance with VIP Video D.J. —Movies, Movies, Movies— September 21 7:30 p.m.-- "Degarmo & Key Concert" October 2-7— HOMECOMING '89 —Dances, Dances, Dances— Semi-Formal Christmas Ball Roomate Debate Movie Star Look-Alike Contest April 16-21— SPRING JUBILEE April 20— WEBB JAM II with a surprise These are just a few of the events we need to get pumped up for... so start pumping! Just a couple of more things before I sail away... HOMECOMING '89 is less than 90 days away! And finally, this column is the first of many to come in The Pilot. So watch out and Hang Loose! Until our yachts meet again... I'm Noel T. Manning, II saying "Never hi-dive into an empty pool!" In each issue of The Pilot, there will be a "lighter side" section designed especially to amuse and entertain the Gardner- Webb College family. The stories in the section are not true! With that thought in mind, here is your first taste of the Lighter Side. Director of Freshman Pro grams Rhoda Sowers recently found a secret intelligence leak in the Webb Building. It seems that someone had stolen all of it. Dr. Bob Morgan was found to be an extra-terrestrial life- form from the planet Quebec. This is thought to be the meaning behind the now-legendary greeting: "Hello, humans!" After years of militant denial. Dr. Tony Eastman finally admitted to giving to the James Earl Carter re-election fund. Rumor has it that Dr. Barry Heunbright had, a major role in convincing Dr. Eastman to give "till it hurts." An angry mob of student DJ's led by Robert Harrelson, Joe Alverson, and the Fishman took over campus radio station WGWG yesterday. Demands have not yet be announced in this hostile coup to overthrow manager M. Allen Setzer. Sources in the know suggest that the DJ's want more beautiful music and less rock-n-roll. Want to have somefun? Have we got just the thing for you! Join The Pilot staff or The Web staff! Any daring young individuals should contact Campus Box 490 or 520. Don't Dream It- Be It! Welcome to Gardner-Webb College! Finally, after 3 long months of eager anticipation, the time has come to official ly become a college student. What will the future hold for the class of 1993? No one really knows; however, one thing is for certain: it is a long and winding road. There are many turns and detours along the way; someone must accept the responsibility of navigator. The Pilot is here to guide you through your Gardner-Webb College career. As you may have already noticed, this is a special double-front page issue of The Pilot designed to meet the needs of both new students and old (a normal issue of The Pilot is 4- 8 pages long). In this issue, you will find, hopefully, some things that you didn't know. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am R. Shawn Lewis (a.k.a. Flounder the Fishman), editor-in-chief of The Pilot. I am a senior Communications Studies major from Columbia, S.C. The Pilot is, for the most part, produced exclusively by students of Gardner-Webb College. There are some others, however, without whom this paper could not function. Dr. Bill Stowe is the advisor of The Pilot and often steers his student editor(s) through the murky waters of college journalism. Others who provide valuable assistance include Richard Drye, Mily Dover, and the entire staff of Shelby Printing. During the year, you will have questions, opinions, and suggestions that your fellow students as well as the col lege's staff will want to know. The Pilot will serve as a public forum for students, faculty, and staff to air what's on their minds. Any interested student is welcome to submit his ideas, opinions, and/or suggestions to The Pilot. There are several ways to submit. Submissions can be made to Campus Box 52 0 as well as in person at the PUB HOUSE (located next to security in the Reception Center). The only requirements for editori als are: l)they must be signed (names can be withheld upon request); 2)they can not be detrimental to the Christian nature of the college; and 3) The Pilot has the right to edit any submission for grammatical errors. Once again, welcome to the "Webb"! On behalf of the staff of The Pilot, here's to a suc cessful college career!
