Shawn Lewis Although the closest major city (Charlotte) is 50 miles away, the big city villain crime is attacking our fair Boiling Springs. A recent wave of crime has prompted The Pilot to join forces with the Gardner-Webb Safety and Security officers and initiate a campus-wide Crimestoppers program. In each issue of The Pilot, recent crimes will be printed in hopes of obtaining information that will lead to the arrest of the individual (s) involved. A reward may also be given to informants providing information leading to arrests; your name will be kept anonymous. Here is a crime report as provided by Security Chief David Helton: On August 15, 1989, five vehicles were broken into, resulting in a loss of approximately $1,000 in property. A portion of the stolen property has been recovered and arrests are pending in the near future. One student and one non-student have been arrested and charged in connection with a month-long undercover drug operation which took place during the summer. Further arrests are pending. Timothy A. Wybiral was arrested on felony charges of Obtaining Property under False Pretense on September 27, 1989; in that he reportedly posed as a Gardner-Webb student, obtaining a college ID and Vehicle Registration Decal. Officials from Midwestern State in Texas, where Wybiral had been registered as a student, informed me that Wybiral had been arrested while there on a felony warrant from Wisconsin for burglary. * * * Five students have been charged and are facing criminal prosecution for larceny from coin-operated machines. The thefts took place off campus, but an investigation is continuing concerning similar thefts on campus. Look for further bulletins in upcoming issues of The Pilot, as we and the Gardner-Webb Safety and Security officers attempt to "take a bite out of crime." /UND^ /Aie /I PflK) 6STMFF/ OV ckweI Blood hoitncl Gardner-Webb Promo Video Wins Award Gardner-Webb College’s recently-produced recruiting video has won the prestigious first place Gold Award from the N.C. "Ron Cook and Terry Laughlin have been friends of mine for a number of years and there is no way we could have gotten the superior product we did without their outstanding talents and 'generous contributions," Brock said, acknowledging the award. Cook/Laughlin donated their time and exper- tise to the project. The GWC video was recently featured in MARKEE magazine in a full-page story with photographs illustrating the inno vative MTV/PM magazine format. The article termed the video "both informative and entertaining" appealing to "today’s teenager (as a) product of the television age." The article also termed the video as "something different." The awards are presented each year to recognize outstanding communications projects produced by statewide groups. The awards banquet was held in Greensboro at the lABC’s annual awards banquet. Other entrants included Duke Power, Burroughs Wellcome Co., Wake Forest University, Royal Insurance, Hardee’s, IBM, and Integon. One of the judges, ABC Communications Consultant, G. Corki Wilson said, "After seeing your video, I felt I’d like to see the beautiful campus you captured." Although used primarily for recruiting new students, the GWC video is used widely for numerous other projects and meetings.
