The Pilot, page 6 Gardner-Webb Bulldogs SPORTS Bulldogs Win One, Lose One By R. Shawn Lewis Homecoming for Gardner-Webb has many traditions: floats, banners, dances, and great football. This year’s edition of Homecoming did not break tradition. Saturday afternoon, the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne came to town looking to spoil the Bulldog’s Homecoming festivities. In a game that featured 871 yards of total offense, the Bulldogs conquered the upset-minded Bears 39-30 in front of thousands of cheering fans. The Runnin’ Bulldog offense produced a total of 490 yards, 290 on the ground and 200 in the air. Darrell Middleton and quarterback Dimekko Sydney both were over 100 yards rushing for the day (Dimekko was rewarded by the SAC-8 by being named Offensive Player of the Week). Receiver Tim Waters was Sydney’s favorite target, amassing 155 yards in receptions with 2 TDs. Although the defense did give up 381 yards, they answered the call late in the second half Led by Warren Choice, Mark Kimel, and Andre Davis, the defense successfully prevented the Bears from completing a comeback attempt. With the victory, the Runnin’ Bulldogs are 4-1 (2-0 SAC-8) and 9th in the nation. *** Bulldogs Lose Twice on Saturday *** The Runnin’ Bulldogs traveled to Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Indians in a SAC-8 match-up. MARION ST. In a game that was close all the way, the Bulldogs were edged by the Indians. Catawba quarterback Mike Warfield picked the Bulldog secondary apart for over 300 yards passing. In the second quarter, with the Bulldogs driving down the field after scoring moments earlier, quarterback Dimekko Sydney went down after scrambling from Indian attackers. He has been diagnosed as having a severe separated shoulder and is doubtful for the remainder of the regular season. His replacement is freshmen Charles Barnes. Although Barnes was not listed in the pre-season depth charts, he appears more than capable of filling Sydney’s shoes. O., his second series of downs Saturday, he connected with Tim Waters on a 60-yard scoring pass. With crucial SAC-8 games against Carson-Newman and Presbyterian, the Runnin’ Bulldogs must regroup and Charles Barnes will come of age quickly. The Bulldogs are now 4-2 (2-1 SAC-8) and definitely still in the hunt for the title and playoffs. Now is the time for Gardner-Webb fans to give it their all and lift the Bulldogs to victory. * * * "HILARIOUS - A WUCH BIGGER GUT-BUSTER THAH GHOSTBUSTERS: Keaton's BEETLEJUICE' is one of the biggest, baddest wolves a gfiost movie Inas ever unleashed, a polter-aas.'' So far this year, the ladies have put their all into every match and their record proves this to be true (5-6). The team is led by seniors Susie Moore Hughs and Lydia Powell; juniors Karen Kidd and Margaret "Buffy" Phillips; sophomores Sandy Basinger, Salli Phillips, Kim Tobin, and Melanie Ward; and freshmen Melissa Lee, Beth McCord, Teena Schronce, Andrea Sells, and Jan Sprinkle. The remainder of the season looks to be very promising, despite the youthfulness of the team, for one simple reason: a desire to play the best volleyball each time they go out on the court. "This is the best group of hitters in 3 years, and their skills have and are continuing to improve," said Coach Dee Hunt, in her sixth season as women’s volleyball coach. "The team is still very young in terms of playing time and court experience on the college level, but they are eager to learn and more eager to win." The schedule for the volleyball team is a very challenging one, with new SAC-8 opponents such as Carson-Newman and Presbyterian. With determination and a strong desire to win, the Bulldogs will do just fine. Keep up the good work!
