The Pilot, page 6 Gardner-Webb cr>rM?T'c BuUdogs »FOKl?» Gridiron Woes Continue p^t Coulson: By R. Shawn Lewis In the aftermath of a heartbreaking loss to Carson- Newman, the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb traveled to Elon College on Saturday, October 28 to take on the winless Fighting Christians of Elon. In a game that saw 5 G-W turnovers, the Bulldogs came up short, losing 20-10. G-W quarterback Charles Barnes, filling in for the injured Dimekko Sidney, fumbled the center snap twice in the first 3 plays of the game. The first fumble resulted in a Fighting Christian score. Elon fell on the ball, then marched 3 3 yards in 6 plays for a touch down, the first score of the game. The touchdown marked the first time this season that Elon (1-6; 1-4 SAC-8) had led all season. After the Elon touchdown, the Runnin' Bulldogs marched down the field, skillfully using a balanced running and passing attack. The drive stalled after 1st and goal on the Elon 2 and Jeff Parker was forced to come to kick a field goal. The field goal, Parker's 47th in his career, tied him for 3rd on the all-time NAIA place-kicking record. With the score 7-3, fresh man quarterback Barnes connected with wide receiver Rodney Robinson on a 82-yard scoring pass. Parker's extra point made the score 10-7. Late in the third quarter, Elon began a drive that would prove to be the game winner. The drive culminated with a razzle dazzle play that led off the fourth quarter. On a flanker reverse pass, flanker Casey Bethard, son of former Washington Redskins quarter back Bobby Bethard, threw a 3 6- yard scoring strike to James Jones to put the Fighting Christians ahead for good, 14- 10. Elon later added another score for insurance and the final score was 20-10. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 4-4 and 2-3 in SAC-8 play. Although the game did not hold many bright spots for Gardner-Webb, running back Darrell Middleton continued his assault on the G-W record book. Middleton rushed for 97 yards Saturday, bringing his career total to 3,553. The Force By Darren Sanders If you did a survey around campus and asked students if they knew Patrick Coulson, the majority would probably say, "No." However, if you change the question to "do you know number 24 for the Runnin' Bulldog men's basketball team?", their response would probably change to "You mean the one who does all those awesome dunks?!" Yeah, Gardner-Webb. That is Patrick Coulson. Coulson, a 6'8" 205-pound sophomore from Wadesboro, N.C., is a very mild-mannered guy, who always has a smile on his face. But the minute he changes from his street clothes and dons #24, he becomes Superman on the court. He leaps defenders in single bound for a dunk; rebounds with the power of a runaway locomotive; and runs the court like a speeding bullet. Patrick Coulson is a true talent and says he is looking forward to this season. With the numbers he put up last year, all GWC basketball fans are looking forward to this season as well. He averaged 10.6 ppg and 6 rebounds last season. Those stats are impressive for most players, but consider the fact that Patrick Coulson was a freshman last year and those numbers seem monstrous. Coulson took off for more dunks last year than a DC-10 out of JFK airport. Coming out of high school, Patrick averaged 19 ppg and 8 rebounds. He was named to the North Carolina All-State team and played in the East-West game. "Coulson was a player we were lucky to get," says Coach Jim Wiles, head coach of the men's basketball team. Patrick had offers from a number of NCAA division I schools like UNC-C and UNC-W. One fact that helped GWC lure Coulson was the fact that his high school, Anson Senior High in Wadesboro, played some games here at the Webb. His role this year will be slightly different than last year says Coach Wiles. He will be expected to block more shots and get more rebounds. "We will need him to be a force," Wiles went on to say. Patrick Coulson says to that, "I am ready to be that force." Soccer Team Improves By Stacy Stanley Soccer at Gardner-Webb is a relatively new sport. This is only its third year in existence at a sport here at the Webb. Each season, the team seems to progress a little farther toward building a successful, winning program. Thus far this year, the Bulldogs have compiled a record of 5-12-2. "We're having a good year. It has been a tough one, but we have had a lot of positive things happen," says Coach Tony Setzer, in his second season as coach. The most positive thing is the quality of the players, and the Bulldogs definitely have quality. This season, the Runnin' Bulldogs have the 5th offense in the conference, averaging over 2 goals a game. This is largely due to the emergence of Steve Petranick, a sophomore from Concord. Steve set a Gardner-Webb record scor ing 11 goals and 3 assists in a season. The rest of the 1989 Runnin' Bulldog soccer team consists of: seniors Mike Dudko and Jimmy Mitchell; junior Mark Smith; sophomores Jason Barnes, John Ferris, Andy Lamb, Steve Petranick, John Schaefer, and Efrain Tirado; and freshmen Marty Elmore, Ed Fraile, Larry Farrell, David Hartman, Doug Holland, Richard Jones, Doug Martin, Jon Shockley, David Steeves, George Thomas, and John Tordavo. The team is very young and has an abundance of talent in its freshman members. With the continued help and support from the fans. Dr. White, Coach Fish, and the rest of the Gardner-Webb family. Coach Setzer foresees a great future for Gardner-Webb soccer.
