Europeans Land in Boiling Springs
By R. Shawn Lewis
Saturday, November 11th,
Europe came to Gardner-Webb
College. There were no weapons,
no prime ministers; just bas
ketball players who wanted to
share a bit of culture, on a
basketball court.
A womens team from Sweden
and a Danish mens team, touring
the eastern United States
together, took on the Runnin'
Bulldogs in the Paul Porter
Arena. The Swedish ladies, with
two Olympians and one profes
sional member, came into the
exhibition with a 3-1 record,
the loss coming to the Lady
Mounties of Appalachian State
in overtime.
The women's game was first
and began with both team
exchanging gifts. From that
point on, though, it was strict
ly business for the Swedes.
Using a definite height and age
advantage, Sweden quickly
established a double digit lead
over Bud Black's younger and
less-experienced Women Runnin'
Bulldogs.
For the Bulldogs, nothing
seemed to gel throughout the
game. Standout Fredia Lawrence
went 4 for 2 2 from the field,
while last year's leading junior
New B-Ball
Assistant
Former Atlanta Braves
player Richard Johnson has
joined the staff of Gardner-Webb
College as Assistant Men's
Basketball Coach, Assistant
Professor of Health Education/
Physical Education, and Director
of Health Education Programming.
Johnson, a graduate of
Georgia Southern College,
received his master's degree in
health education this year from
the University of Georgia in
Athens. While in Athens, he
served as teaching assistant in
the department of Health
Promotion and Behavior, as well
as a graduate assistant coach
at the university.
In addition to the above,
Richard Johnson has held teach
ing and coaching positions at
Waynesboro and Treutlen High
Schools in Georgia, recording
an outstanding 223-38 record
with two regional championships.
As Director of Health
Education Programming, Mr.
Johnson is responsible for the
development and presentation of
programs related to students and
their health issues. Programs
on substance abuse, AIDS and
other sexually-transmitted
diseases, eating disorders, and
other student health-related
issues will be presented.
Johnson joins a Gardner-
Webb basketball program that has
compiled a 425-168 record since
becoming a senior college in
1969-1970. Few schools, large
or small, can match this 71.7%
winning percentage.

college scorer Roslyn Edwards
was an erratic 3 for 8. Val
Crowell and Hattie Young how
ever, both had outstanding
games, scoring 16 and 11 points
respectively.
By the half, the Swedes
held a 17 point lead, 40-23.
The second half saw Sweden
explode for 52 points and cruise
to a 92-52 victory. The Women
Runnin' Bulldogs did play with
intense spirit in the game, but
played what many termed "the
best womens team ever seen" in
these parts.
In the mens game, however,
the scene was just the opposite.
Denmark, 0-4 on the tour, was
simply overmatched by the
Runnin' Bulldogs. Coach Jim
Wiles, left empty by the losses
of All-American Stan Easterling
and All-District Donald Simmons,
has done a tremendous job with
the young men. Sophomore Patrick
Colson, heir apparent to the
Easterling dynasty, appeared
more than capable of filling
Stan's vacated shoes, scoring
16 points and being a force on
the boards.
The first half was a bit
sluggish, G-W 25-Denmark 18,
but the Bulldogs started the
second half running. When the
smoke had cleared, the Runnin'
Bulldogs had scored 55 points
while holding the Danish
nationals to only 23. Final
score G-W 80, Denmark 41.
Stars of the game for the
Bulldogs included Colson and
fellow post Bruce Harris, who
added 11. Darren Sanders, forced
to shooting guard due to injury
of Reggie Ampley, scored 9
points. Perhaps the most
exciting moments of the ball-
game, however, came when Wiles
inserted his second team, all
true freshmen, and turned them
loose. Particularly impressive
were Dwayne Ayers, who had 8
points including 2 of 3 three-
pointers, and Greg Ross, who
scored six, as well as feeding
Colson for two monstrous slam
dunks.
Both Sweden and Denmark
continue their tour of the
United States through this week.
The Runnin' Bulldog men open
their season in the Rotary Dixie
Classic on November 2 0th in the
Paul Porter Arena. The women's
season started Monday and their
first home game is November 27th
against Warren Wilson.
Volleyball Recap
By Stacy Stanley
The Lady Runnin' Bulldogs
volleyball team ended their
season with a win over Queen's
College of Charlotte. The
Bulldogs soundly defeated the
Royals three games to none, the
scores being 15-3, 15-10, and
15-7. The win gave the Lady Dogs
an 11-15 record, the best ever
in the history of Gardner-Webb
College volleyball.
"However, there were
matches we could have and should
have won. The team, because it
is so young, is still searching
for identity, but they were and
still are willing to learn;
willing to work for success,"
said Coach Dee Hunt, in
summation of the season.
All things aside, this was
a very successful and special
season. We would like to congra
tulate Beth McCord on her selec
tion as All-District team mem
ber. Also, thanks for a great
four years, Susie Moore Hughes
and Lydia Powell.
Finally, this was also the
last season for Dee Hunt
women's volleyball coach. Sht
will, however, remain here ai
Gardner-Webb. "I feel ver>
blessed to have had the oppor
tunity to work with these
athletes and others before
them," Hunt added.
I personally would like to
thank Coach Hunt for all her
cooperation with me not only as
statistician, but as a member
of the press. Thanks again!
