SBI Investigates
Miscarriage

The human fetus discovered Monday,
April 2nd at the Boiling Springs sewage
treatment plant was the result of a miscar
riage by a Gardner-Webb College student
in a residence hall, according to inves
tigators with the State Bureau of Inves
tigators. The fetus was apparently flushed
through the sewage system and was dis
covered in the filtration system at the plant.
SBI, investigating the possibility of an
illegal abortion, found its way to Gardner-
Webb College. Upon questioning the stu
dent and examining the autopsy report on
the fetus, SBI concluded that a miscarriage,
and not an abortion, resulted in the death
of the fetus. That autopsy, performed at
Gaston Memorial Hospital, revealed that
the fetus "was not a viable fetus. It was in the
early stages and would not have been living
at the time of the miscarriage."
Under North Carolina law, if the autopsy
had shown that the fetus was born alive,
then a violation of criminal laws would have
been a possibility. However, if the autopsy
shows the fetus was "dead or inclusive,"
there is no violation.
While allegations of abortion still circu
late, SBI has said it will not file charges in
connection with the case.

New Head Basketball Coach Jim Johnson
GWC Gets New Basketball Coach

There has been another "hunt" besides
the one for Red October: Gardner-Webb’s
hunt for a new head basketball coach. Wed
nesday, April 4th, that hunt came to an end.
Gardner-Webb College announced that
Jim Johnson, former head coach of Spar
tanburg Methodist Junior College, has
been named to replace Jim Wiles who
resigned earUer in the semester. While at
Spartanburg Methodist, Johnson compiled
a 190-132 record that included five cham
pionships. Jim Johnson was awarded
"Coach of the Year" honors four times at
SMJC.
Although Johnson has had success on the
basketball court, he and his players have
also excelled off the court.

1988, was unable to be reached for com
ments before press time. However, The I
Pilot was able to contact Mr. Tracy Jessup,
Assistant to the President and former stu
dent body president, for his thoughts on|
Franklin’s resignation.

Coach Johnson has a reinarkable 83%
success rate in graduating players. Johnson
stresses academics along with athletics. He
served on the Academic Affairs and Cur
riculum committee at Spartanburg
Methodist as well as the Academic Advise
ment, Testing, and Placement committee.
Coming along with Johnson to Gardner-
Webb are wife Linda Kay, and three
children, Carrie, 7; Craig, 4; and infant
Anna. While not coaching basketball, the
Johnson family is very active in the church
and community. Mr. Johnson is currently a
deacon at First Baptist Church in Spartan
burg and is a past president of the Spartan
burg Sertoma Club.

Arrested For Drugs

Tuesday, March 27th, Gardner-Webb
College student Rodney Scott Spangler was
arrested by undercover police for posses
sion with intent to sell and distribute
marijuana. The arrest is a part of an on
going crackdown on drugs by Gardner-
Webb Safety and Security and the Boiling
Springs Police Department.
Spangler, a 20-year-old freshman
residential student, was approached Tues
day night by an undercover officer who
asiced him [Spangler] to sell him some
marijuana. Spangler then left the campus
and went to an unknown source. When he
returned, he had in his possession 7 grams
of marijuana (street value = $50-$60). He
was then arrested for the above-mentioned
felonious offense.
Upon arrest, the Boiling Springs P.D. did
a record check to see if Spangler had any
previous convictions. It was found that in
1987, Spangler was convicted of breaking
and entering as well as larceny. He received
two years probation for those offenses.
A court date has been set in the case for
Wednesday, April 11th.
