UPCOMING EVENTS SPRING DAZE That’s Entertainment Tidal Waves By Noel T. Manning, II Entertainment Editor The 1990 Spring Formal is only a short time away, and if you are dateless, I suggest that you do something about it. (Ideas: "In Search of a Date" t-shirts, billboards, or banners, or maybe a "Benefit for the Date less"). Once you’ve found your date (yeah, right), you will more than likely be asking yourself, "Huh, I wonder if I’ll get a good night kiss?" The answer: Probably not!! But...that doesn’t mean you should give up hope! So, for all those that are planning, hoping, awaiting, begging, living, sacrific ing, anticipating, and yearning for a good night Spring Formal kiss-This trivia is for you: * A single kiss reduces your life by 3 minutes because it increases pulse rate and strains the heart (Ah, but it’s worth it...Isn’t it?). * Kissing can help you lose weight. The average smooch burns up three calories— the equivalent of a dinner mint (But, a din ner mint is recommended before the act of kissing...for both parties...unless bad breath is your thing). * Thirty-seven percent of men and 97 per cent of women close their eyes while kissing passionately (hmmm, how puzzling), * The most common kiss is a peck on the cheek (But, who likes being common?). * Global surveys consistently name Americans as the best kissers in the world. The French come in second. Italians third. Russians last (Once again America has something to be proud of). —And finally— * The longest screen kiss was three minutes, five seconds ling. It was set 49 years ago by Jane Wyman and Regis Tooney in the film "You’re in the Army Now." (The longest Gardner-Webb Col lege student kiss was four weeks, two days, and five hours. It was established only recently by Robin Freeman and an uniden tified male at Eastridge Mall—The two were standing on a broken down escalator and they decided to await its repair.) My, oh, my...That’s it for "smooching trivia," and I wish everyone luck in the pur suit of "X"-cellence—so, until the next course is charted, this is Noel T. Manning, II asking this..."Have you ever wondered why there’s a permanent press setting on an iron?" Students Volunteer Help For D.A.R.E. Special to The Pilot During the weekend of March 30-April 2nd, 14 Gardner-Webb College students participated in Shelby Cinema 4’s promo tion of the new release, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." The promotion featured a real live member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Leonardo) and allowed youngsters and some not-so-youngsters a chance to get their picture taken with Leonardo. Proceeds from the pictures went to benefit Project D.A.R.E. (Drug Awareness Resistance Education). All in all, a total of $883.86 was raised for D.A.R.E. As for the movie itself, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the hottest thing around. Although the turtles are normally seen in cartoon form, the motion picture was anything but a cartoon. The success of the movie speaks for itself: $25 million gross in its first week alone, making it the top-seller so far this year. "I was really surprised to see this kind of turnout. I wasn’t really hip to how bad these turtles really are. I wish that they would have been around when I was a kid," com mented Flounder, a GWC volunteer. 'These kids were wearing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle shirts, noses, costumes..i -you name it and they had it. Wow! I guess all I can say is ’Kowabunga’ dude!" Other Gardner-Webb students par ticipating included Russ Williams, Noel T. Manning, II, Don Ervin, Kalli Kaligiros, Rachel Harris, Dawn Jestes, Karen Martin, Joe Hough, Robin Freeman, Chrissy Vaughn, Jane Richards, and Wendy Myers. & SctS 117 N. The Reel Thing Movie Reviews By Casper Jetson Pretty Woman (R) A- What happens when an international corporate raider crosses paths with a Hol lywood Boulevard prostitute?...In this par ticular case, a serious, romantic comedy that shouldn’t be passed up!! Richard Gere is the suave billionaire bachelor who "picks up" more than he bar gains for while seeking directions to Bever ly Hills...He finds JuHa (more than just a "pretty woman") Roberts who offers to help him solve the dilemma of being lost (fof a reasonable fee, that is!)...Gere accepts her assistance, and soon, he is compelled to make her an offer. An offer of a week’s employment, for a sizable amount of money, which Roberts accepts! What then follows is a series of situations that lead to laughter, tears, pleasure, and, yes, pain-for the audience as well as the cast. The characters allow us to become part of them in this genuine fairy tale romance! By the movie’s end, Gere has taught this "Pretty Woman" a few things about the elegant side of life—and the dazzlingly beautiful Julia Roberts has educated the cold-hearted take-over king that money mnll but iQYg-but, love can transcend money...and it does! Through Roberts we observe each obstacle she faces—and how she overcomes them. Roberts is positively more than just a...Pretty Woman!
